It’s fair to say that Leeds United have looked different recently.
The Whites haven’t been at the races whatsoever, and if it weren’t for a late winner against Birmingham City they’d have failed to win any of their previous four matches.
It’s no surprise that this poor run has coincided with a defensive lapse.

Leeds still have the joint-best backline in the league, conceding just 20 goals in 25 games, but ten of those have been shipped in their last four outings.
So what’s going on? Ben White’s stats are still as excellent as ever, winning 11 interceptions in the last three games. The same, meanwhile, goes for Liam Cooper, who has amassed 20 clearances in the same time frame. So where is the defensive lapse coming from?
It’ll be hard for United fans to hear it, but blame for the Whites’ poor defensive record as of late may lie on the shoulders of Kalvin Phillips.
The defensive midfielder has often been the rock in front of Leeds’ backline protecting the defence from any possible threats, but in recent weeks he’s been lacklustre.
The 24-year-old averages the third-highest tackles-per-game in the entire division, but in Leeds’ last four matches he’s made just two tackles overall, averaging 0.5 per match which is way down from the 3.1 he has been averaging this term.
That’d be ok if he was making up for it by winning the ball back in other ways, but his interception numbers tell a similar story as he’s made just two in the past four matches.
There’s no doubting that Phillips is one of the main reasons for Leeds’ brilliant defensive record this season – his tackling stats up to this point have been nigh on impeccable, but his recent dip seems to be what has caused United to leak goals.
In other news, Phil Hay has named three positions that Leeds are looking to strengthen in January.

وقال مانشستر يونايتد في بيانه الرسمي والذي نشرته صحيفة “مترو” الإنجليزية: “لسوء الحظ، أصبح هذا النوع من المواقف شائعًا جدًا، هذا هو آخر شيء يستحقه ماسون بعد أن كان ودودًا للغاية مع كل شخص قابله منذ انضمامه إلى نادينا”.

وأضاف: “يضغط صائدو التوقيعات المحترفون بانتظام على لاعبي مانشستر يونايتد للتوقيع على كميات كبيرة من الأشياء التي يبيعونها بعد ذلك بمئات الجنيهات، لقد أصبح حدثًا يوميًا ومشكلة رئيسية في كارينجتون”.
وواصل: “تمنع هذه المجموعات المنظمة سيارات اللاعبين وتضايقهم عند وصولهم ومغادرتهم أماكن عملهم، لقد أصبح الأمر خطيرًا حقًا وعليك أن تقلق من أن الأمر مجرد مسألة وقت قبل أن يتأذى شخص ما”.

بدأ نادي النصر السعودي مفاوضاته للتعاقد مع السنغالي ساديو ماني، من صفوف بايرن ميونخ الألماني.
انضم ماني إلى بايرن ميونخ في الصيف الماضي، قادمًا من ليفربول الإنجليزي، وشهد موسمه إصابة قوية أبعدته عن المشاركة في مونديال قطر مع السنغال، واستمر غيابه من نوفمبر إلى منتصف فبراير تقريبًا.

النصر جلب النجم البرتغالي كريستيانو رونالدو إلى صفوفه بعد مفاوضات في ديسمبر الماضي، حين فسخ تعاقده مع مانشستر يونايتد.
بالإضافة إلى وصول رونالدو ضم النصر أيضًا لاعب خط وسط إنتر ميلان السابق مارسيلو بروزوفيتش وسيكو فوفانا من لينس.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has sought the advice of a neurologist to further examine the batsman Umar Akmal, who spent a night at a hospital after a seizure on the flight to Jamaica last Wednesday. Akmal, who was playing in the Caribbean Premier League at the time, was asked by the PCB to return to Pakistan and was subsequently ruled out of the limited-overs leg of the Zimbabwe tour.”It is one in a series of steps that the PCB will be undertaking in assessing the medical problem that occurred to Umar Akmal while he was in the West Indies,” the PCB said in a statement. “Umar Akmal is Pakistan’s asset and it is important that all necessary measures are taken so that the PCB is assured that he is available to play for Pakistan without posing any risk to his health”.Until yesterday, Akmal did not admit to suffering any illness and asserted that he was fully fit for national selection. ESPNcricinfo understands that the PCB withdrew his selection as a precautionary measure, going by the initial medical report.The board declared Akmal “medically not fit” and replaced him with the wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed.”Apparently Umar looked fine but he has been asked to go through a complete medical examination to reassess his condition,” PCB doctor Sohail Saleem said. “We were concerned about his health when informed about his medical condition in the West Indies so we have decided to engage a neurologist for detailed advice.”Neurologist Dr Saad Shafqat said Akmal needn’t worry. Two cricketers, Jonty Rhodes and Tony Greig, didn’t let epilepsy affect their international careers.”If the MRI is clear then there will be no problems, it will be controlled,” Shafqat told . “At Umar’s age epilepsy is light and we don’t take it as a serious disease.”Pakistan’s limited-overs leg of the Zimbabwe tour runs from August 23 to 31. The first Test begins September 3, but Akmal was not picked in the Test squad.

At least two members of the IPL governing council are unaware of when and how the three-man commission was selected to inquire into the complaints against the owners of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, and Gurunath Meiyappan, N Srinivasan’s son-in-law.Two others in the eight-member governing council confirmed that even though a meeting wasn’t convened to discuss the issue, their consent was taken over the phone before the decision was announced. They were not willing to divulge who called them for their consent.The BCCI press release sent on May 28 said the IPL governing council had appointed the commission comprising Sanjay Jagdale and two retired high-court judges from Tamil Nadu. Jagdale has since resigned from the BCCI, and there are different versions emerging as to who actually appointed the three men.IS Bindra, former BCCI president and currently Punjab Cricket Association chief, said it was appointed by a committee that consisted of IPL CEO Sundar Raman, BCCI’s general manager (game development) Ratnakar Shetty, TNCA vice-president and BCCI lawyer PS Raman, and event-management firm IMG’s Peter Griffiths. Bindra said Shetty told him that at the BCCI’s working committee where Srinivasan agreed to step aside while the probe was on.Ajay Shirke, who recently resigned as the BCCI treasurer, said he was given to understand that the commission would be appointed by the following people: Shirke himself, Jagdale, Ravi Shastri, IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla and BCCI vice-president Arun Jaitley. Two of those five were supposed to be part of the probe commission, Srinivasan had said in Kolkata, hours before the IPL final.Shirke said that out of the blue he was told next day that he would be on the commission. Shirke said he duly declined. When the release finally arrived from “the IPL Governing Council”, it had Jagdale on the commission. Jagdale has since said he never knew he was to be a part of the commission, and had asked to be excused from it.Shirke didn’t say, though, who put his name, and later Jagdale’s, in the commission. Bindra said he tried to enquire about that during the working-committee meeting. “‘Who made this committee,’ I asked,” Bindra said. “Srinivasan said, ‘I don’t know.’ I asked Professor Shetty, and he said an operations committee named the probe panel. That committee consisted of Sundar Raman, Shetty, Peter Griffiths, and Raman.”Bindra then, speaking to a television channel, went on to point out Raman is the same lawyer that accompanied Gurunath to Mumbai hours before the latter was arrested. Bindra called Raman a personal lawyer of “Mr president”. He even said that the commission was a “Sundar Raman-appointed panel”.Over the few years since the departure of Lalit Modi, Sundar Raman has emerged as Srinivasan’s right-hand man in the board particularly when related to commercial property rights, broadcast production and coverage. He has even represented the BCCI at a chief executives’ committee meeting at the ICC in 2011.With Jagdale and Shirke both gone, the commission’s future remains uncertain. Jagdale’s replacement will have to be named by Jagmohan Dalmiya, the interim in-charge of the BCCI’s day-to-day affairs, which will then have to be ratified by the working committee of the BCCI. Bindra, however, told ESPNcricinfo that the two judges will remain because Jaitley told him that removing them “will be a disrespect to the judges”.

Sean Williams’s career-best effort guided the Zimbabwe chase to a successful finish, after Vusi Sibanda laid the foundation. The home side levelled the series 1-1, making the third and final match of the series the decider. The six-wicket win also broke a seven-match losing streak in ODIs, Zimbabwe having won their last game in October 2011, coincidentally at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.Bangladesh had been struggling at 185 for 7 in the 44th over but an unexpected hitting spree from left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, steered Bangladesh past 200 and then, unbelievably, past 250. He slammed five sixes in his maiden ODI fifty, which came off just 21 balls to equal the Bangladesh record for the quickest half-century.That left Zimbabwe needing to dig deep but Williams was up to the challenge. He struck his eleventh half-century to finish unbeaten on 77 off 74 balls as Zimbabwe overhauled a fairly stiff target. He was not entirely attacking, but did bring out the big shots whenever the opportunity arose or a boundary was required. He struck five fours and a six, powered over square-leg. The boundaries came through pull shots, a straight drive and even a reverse-sweep slammed through regulation cover.Malcolm Waller played a great foil to Williams, contributing 39 off 50 balls with four boundaries. His calmness in a nervous chase also helped, as he played mostly straight and used the crease very well. Williams and Waller added 86 after Brendan Taylor was dismissed in the 35th over, scoring at 6.29. They were mostly calm during the second Powerplay overs that followed immediately, taking just 29 runs as they kept up with the required run-rate.That was the third of three mid-sized partnerships on which the win was built. The first of the three was between Sibanda and Sikandar Raza for the second wicket. The pair added 65 in just 12.2 overs, blunting the pace bowlers. They struck ten boundaries, Sibanda hammering seven in his 51-ball 49 which forced Mushfiqur Rahim to use five bowers in the first 12 overs.Raza was attacking against pace, hitting three boundaries in his 36-ball 23. But the newcomer playing only his second ODI struggled to get the left-arm spinners away.It was the Razzak and Shakib Al Hasan bowling spell which slowed these two down, with Sibanda’s falling lbw to Shakib. Four balls after he was dismissed, Raza followed suit as he chipped an easy catch to midwicket off Shafiul Islam.Taylor and Williams then batted slowly, quite deliberately so. They added 73 for the fourth wicket, which was vital as they were 94 for 3 in the 18th over when Raza was dismissed. Taylor made 37 off 60 balls. The Bangladesh bowlers were ordinary, perhaps for the first time on tour as they were found out by a very good batting track.They couldn’t back up Razzak’s last-ditch effort with the bat. He struck five sixes, one of which was hit out of the ground, in his 22-ball 53. Razzak’s innings, though, only masked how poorly some of the top- and middle-order batsmen performed.The openers Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Ashraful didn’t reach double figures while the new No. 3 Mominul Haque struggled to work the ball around, and play his natural game. Mushfiqur made 26 in quick time but fell leg-before, while Nasir Hossain was constricted by some good field placements by the Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor.Once again, Bangladesh were at the wrong end of a poor umpiring decision. Shakib was adjudged leg-before though the ball looked to be heading down the leg-side, and there was a hint of an inside-edge as well. His reaction was almost violent, slamming the bat on to his pads. It also accidentally touched Taylor’s pad as he walked to celebrate with Prosper Utseya, and Shakib apologised immediately.Until Razzak went after them, the Zimbabwe bowlers were more disciplined than in the first game, when they conceded 18 wides. The return of Kyle Jarvis made the difference, injecting much needed verve into the attack. He was poor towards the end, though, conceding 17 runs in the last over.The May 8 finale would be the perfect end to an erratic but entertaining series which has seen some excellent fightbacks from both sides.
