Glamorgan reach final on Allenby exploits

Jim Allenby scored an unbeaten 74 to give Glamorgan a fighting chance after Hampshire’s bowlers had begun well in Dimitri Mascarenhas final home match

Jim Allenby has been the saviour of Glamorgan this season. He is so prized the county secured him on a new four-year contract in August; some deal for a 30-year-old. But his value was evident as he top-scored and bowled a painfully mean spell to send Glamorgan to their first showpiece final since 2000.His knees must be creaking given the weight of responsibility he has been forced to carry this year. Without his 1700 runs in all competitions, Glamorgan would have endured a miserable year. Here, he read the conditions far better than any of his colleagues with the bat and, with the ball, showed the correct length to bowl on a sluggish pitch.A 60-ball half-century gave some progress to what was for 30 overs a laboured first innings. From Allenby’s stability, Glamorgan added 81 in the final eight overs. That blitz, which included four fours and two sixes in Ben Wright’s unbeaten innings, was more like the cricket seen recently at the Ageas Bowl. Four hundred runs were scored here in the Friends Life t20 quarter-final and run-fests ensued in England internationals with New Zealand and Australia. The push gave Glamorgan a very competitive total, which they defended well, despite Hampshire’s own late surge of 71 in the final 10 overs, led by Sean Ervine, who arguably played the innings of the day by continuing to find the rope and keep Hampshire in the hunt with 54 in 51 balls. But once he holed out to long-on with 58 needed in 27 balls, the champions were dethroned.Ervine was removed by Michael Hogan – another who has made a standout contribution for Glamorgan and who they have relied on in all formats to be competitive. Having been slightly too full in his opening three overs, which conceded 20, Hogan closed out the match with full, straight bowling to end with 4 for 51.But it was Allenby who led the way with the ball, conceding only 18 runs from his eight overs and claiming the wickets of openers James Vince and Michael Roberts, who were pulling their hair out at how difficult the bowling was to manoeuvre.Allenby praises team effort

“It was a good all-round display. We’ve prided ourselves on putting in consistent team performances and not relying on individuals to win games and that’s what we showed again today. Three or four guys chipped in with the bat and all the bowlers did a good job.
“It was a tough wicket. It was quite slow and took turn. We summed it up quicker than they did and bowled brilliantly. With Michale Hogan and Graham Wagg and our spinners we’re always going to go well. It was probably lucky that we were sent in really because it turned more as the game went on.
“A few times out there I thought I’ve got to just whack this but it would probably have gone straight up in the air. It was good to have Murray Goodwin out there to work with and Ben Wright, that is probably one of the best one-day innings you’ll see. He’s only got 40 but that changed the momentum. He’s done it quite a few times this year without the recognition so it was good for him to do it today on the big stage.
“Whoever we come up against in the final, be it Notts or Somerset. They’re going to have guys who want to be seen on TV and are competing for England squads. They’ll take the focus away from the game. If we don’t do that and stick to our roles which are very well defined this year then we’ll go well.”

The Ageas Bowl has seen some cracking wickets for one-day cricket but a slow, sticky surface was unveiled for this semi-final and the conditions were alien to hosts Hampshire, as they lost a second one-day semi-final this season. Hitherto unbeaten at home in the competition this year, and successful in seven out of eight chases in the group stage, Hampshire were unable to hunt down a target asking for just under a run a ball.Allenby was almost impossible to score off. He bowled wicket-to-wicket on a length just fuller of good. With no pace or angle to work with, the batsmen endured eight overs of largely patting the ball back up the pitch. Only one boundary came from his spell, Jimmy Adams reaching out to flick a ball from middle and off wide of deep midwicket. It was Adams who headed the pursuit. Like Allenby, he largely settled for carefully working the bowling around and it was the Hampshire captain who elected to take the batting Powerplay in the 28th over when the required rate had leaped to 10 an over. Two slog sweeps found the rope but as he attempted a third, Andrew Salter, Glamorgan’s 20-year-old offspinner, slid one on to the front pad that was somehow not given out lbw by umpire David Millns. It was the second exceptionally close lbw appeal Adams had survived. He also escaped a caught behind decision when it appeared he gloved an attempted sweep to Mark Wallace. But he rode his luck and brought up a 73-ball fifty with a leg side swat that bounced over the head of Wallace. It was cricket straight from a schoolboy fixture and matched the six-yard run-out Adams missed earlier in the day; one of three run-out chances Hampshire didn’t take in a lacklustre fielding display.Adams fell top-edging an on-side flick that went straight in the air when 76 were needed from 42 balls and it was too much for the new batsmen who followed to settle on a pitch where timing was very difficult all day, even accounting for a fairytale scenario from Dimitri Mascarenhas, playing his last game for Hampshire. It was not the swansong he had hoped for. He stood at the end of his run at the Northern End preparing to bowl the 31st over of the Glamorgan innings. But the public address delayed his shuffling few strides to the crease to announce that this would be Mascarenhas’s final over at the Ageas Bowl.He acknowledged the generous applause before sending down a typically slippery over from which only three balls were scored off. A standing ovation followed as the Hampshire faithful recognised the final sight of one of their great servants. Hampshire lost the match and a legend.

Williams drives Zimbabwe to series-levelling win

Sean Williams guided the Zimbabwe chase to a successful finish, after Vusi Sibanda laid the foundation

The Report by Mohammad Isam05-May-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSean Williams’ unbeaten 77 guided Zimbabwe to a six-wicket victory•AFP

Sean Williams’s career-best effort guided the Zimbabwe chase to a successful finish, after Vusi Sibanda laid the foundation. The home side levelled the series 1-1, making the third and final match of the series the decider. The six-wicket win also broke a seven-match losing streak in ODIs, Zimbabwe having won their last game in October 2011, coincidentally at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.Bangladesh had been struggling at 185 for 7 in the 44th over but an unexpected hitting spree from left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, steered Bangladesh past 200 and then, unbelievably, past 250. He slammed five sixes in his maiden ODI fifty, which came off just 21 balls to equal the Bangladesh record for the quickest half-century.That left Zimbabwe needing to dig deep but Williams was up to the challenge. He struck his eleventh half-century to finish unbeaten on 77 off 74 balls as Zimbabwe overhauled a fairly stiff target. He was not entirely attacking, but did bring out the big shots whenever the opportunity arose or a boundary was required. He struck five fours and a six, powered over square-leg. The boundaries came through pull shots, a straight drive and even a reverse-sweep slammed through regulation cover.Malcolm Waller played a great foil to Williams, contributing 39 off 50 balls with four boundaries. His calmness in a nervous chase also helped, as he played mostly straight and used the crease very well. Williams and Waller added 86 after Brendan Taylor was dismissed in the 35th over, scoring at 6.29. They were mostly calm during the second Powerplay overs that followed immediately, taking just 29 runs as they kept up with the required run-rate.That was the third of three mid-sized partnerships on which the win was built. The first of the three was between Sibanda and Sikandar Raza for the second wicket. The pair added 65 in just 12.2 overs, blunting the pace bowlers. They struck ten boundaries, Sibanda hammering seven in his 51-ball 49 which forced Mushfiqur Rahim to use five bowers in the first 12 overs.Raza was attacking against pace, hitting three boundaries in his 36-ball 23. But the newcomer playing only his second ODI struggled to get the left-arm spinners away.It was the Razzak and Shakib Al Hasan bowling spell which slowed these two down, with Sibanda’s falling lbw to Shakib. Four balls after he was dismissed, Raza followed suit as he chipped an easy catch to midwicket off Shafiul Islam.Taylor and Williams then batted slowly, quite deliberately so. They added 73 for the fourth wicket, which was vital as they were 94 for 3 in the 18th over when Raza was dismissed. Taylor made 37 off 60 balls. The Bangladesh bowlers were ordinary, perhaps for the first time on tour as they were found out by a very good batting track. They couldn’t back up Razzak’s last-ditch effort with the bat. He struck five sixes, one of which was hit out of the ground, in his 22-ball 53. Razzak’s innings, though, only masked how poorly some of the top- and middle-order batsmen performed. The openers Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Ashraful didn’t reach double figures while the new No. 3 Mominul Haque struggled to work the ball around, and play his natural game. Mushfiqur made 26 in quick time but fell leg-before, while Nasir Hossain was constricted by some good field placements by the Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor.Once again, Bangladesh were at the wrong end of a poor umpiring decision. Shakib was adjudged leg-before though the ball looked to be heading down the leg-side, and there was a hint of an inside-edge as well. His reaction was almost violent, slamming the bat on to his pads. It also accidentally touched Taylor’s pad as he walked to celebrate with Prosper Utseya, and Shakib apologised immediately.Until Razzak went after them, the Zimbabwe bowlers were more disciplined than in the first game, when they conceded 18 wides. The return of Kyle Jarvis made the difference, injecting much needed verve into the attack. He was poor towards the end, though, conceding 17 runs in the last over. The May 8 finale would be the perfect end to an erratic but entertaining series which has seen some excellent fightbacks from both sides.

Zimbabwe surrender to Shillingford, again

It took just 42.2 overs on the third day for West Indies to clinch the second Test, sweep the series, win six Tests in a row and inflict another surrender to spin on Zimbabwe

The Report by Siddhartha Talya22-Mar-2013

It took just 42.2 overs on the third day for West Indies to clinch the second Test, sweep the series, win six Tests in a row and inflict another surrender to spin on Zimbabwe. The hosts promptly declared during a 15-minute rain delay in the morning, and a solid start from the Zimbabwe batsmen was a hugely misleading prelude to what was to follow. Once again, Zimbabwe failed to sustain a promising phase of play long enough against a superior opposition. Shane Shillingford was their nemesis again, picking up 10 wickets in the match, several of which owed to the unsettling bounce he was able to extract from the track in his hometown. The strategy for West Indies was simple, having successfully employed it in the first Test and the first innings in Dominica. The spinners, Shillingford, brought on in the 13th over, and Marlon Samuels, who picked up six wickets in the game, got the ball to turn, and more crucially bounce, from the off stump, surrounded the Zimbabwe batsmen with close-in fielders, who snapped up what came their way or had their team-mates in the outfield ready for opportunities borne out of a desperate attempt to find a release.Vusi Sibanda and Brendan Taylor countered that pressure temporarily by sweeping Shillingford, Sibanda even struck him for six over deep square leg, but it was only a matter of time before the spitting bounce that proved Zimbabwe’s undoing throughout the series returned to trouble them. Taylor was caught on the glove when Shillingford held his length back and caught at short leg.Smart stats

West Indies’ victory is their sixth in a row. They have won two each against New Zealand, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Since the start of 2012, they have won six and lost four matches (two draws).

The win is West Indies’ sixth in eight Tests against Zimbabwe. The two draws came in Tests played in Zimbabwe.

Shane Shillingford’s haul of 19 wickets is the highest by a West Indies bowler in a two-Test series. He is also the first West Indian and 14th overall to take three or more five-fors in a two-Test series.

Shillingford’s 10 for 93 is his career best and the best bowling performance for West Indies against Zimbabwe, surpassing his nine-wicket haul in the previous Test in Barbados.

Shillingford’s 10 for 93 is also the fifth-best performance by a West Indian spinner.

The win is West Indies’ second by an innings since 2009. It is only their sixth innings win since 2000 (two each against Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and England).

Taylor’s wicket marked the start of the spinners coming to dominate the innings, but Tino Best and Darren Sammy did their bit to end Zimbabwe’s early resistance. Best was guilty of bowling too short, and Sibanda had cashed in, slashing hard through the off side and even driving handsomely for boundaries when the ball was pitched up, as he did against Shannon Gabriel. But Best went round the wicket to Hamilton Masakadza, who was also set, got him to seemingly glove one down the leg side, reviewed the “not out” decision and got it overturned. A possible reason for the third umpire to reverse the original call was a change in rotation of the ball as it reached Masakadza’s glove, indicating there may have been contact.Minutes earlier, in the same over, Masakadza had successfully reviewed another caught-behind decision, this time having been given out, though the evidence, in the absence of Hot Spot, was again inconclusive.Just two balls after Taylor had been sent back, Sibanda played a rash shot across the line to Sammy to be trapped in front, his failed review confirming the ball would have clipped the bails. With the top order out of the way, Shillingford and Samuels eased past those that came after. Sean Williams got a top-edge while trying to play a cut against Shillingford, to be caught at point, and the capitulation picked up speed following the lunch break. Craig Ervine survived 34 balls but was caught brilliantly by Chris Gayle diving to his left at slip to pouch an edge with one hand. The extra bounce in the track brought the backward short leg into play and Malcolm Waller found that fielder when he tried to work Samuels away off the back foot. Shillingford had, six overs earlier, dismissed Tino Mawoyo, forced to bat at No.7 after missing a good part of the second day’s play, in the same region. With Waller, perhaps Zimbabwe’s best batsman in the limited-overs series this tour, back in the pavilion, West Indies required just four more overs to wrap up the innings. Graeme Cremer’s stand-out shot was a six over long-on with his eyes staring at the ground at the point of, as well as after, impact, but inside-edged a catch towards midwicket trying the same stroke to give Shillingford his fifth wicket. It was also Shillingford’s tenth for the match and 19th for the series – the best returns in a two-match series for a West Indies bowler, going past Courtney Walsh’s 16 in New Zealand in 1994-95.Paul Jarvis and Tendai Chatara lasted just two deliveries, Samuels hastening the end of a mismatch that continued West Indies’ best run of consecutive victories in Tests – now six – since 1988.
