Jaipur back as Rajasthan's IPL venue

The BCCI is set to relocate Rajasthan Royal’s home games to Jaipur, after allotting the matches to Ahmedabad and Rajkot because of a dispute

The Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur is set to host all of Rajasthan Royals’ home games during the upcoming edition of the IPL. The BCCI will relocate the matches to the original host city of the franchise after having allotted them to Ahmedabad and Rajkot following the prolonged dispute over use of the stadium. In a meeting between the IPL, Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) and Rajasthan Royals’ officials at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, the RCA acting secretary KK Sharma was told to go ahead with the preparations. “The board gave us the nod during yesterday’s meeting and we have started the preparations,” Sharma told ESPNcricinfo. “We will work in tandem with Rajasthan Royals to ensure Jaipur stages a grand IPL show yet again.”The matches had been shifted out of Jaipur due to a standoff between the RCA and the Rajasthan state sports council, which owns the stadium. Since the memorandum of understanding (MoU) expired last July, both the parties had a disagreement about the terms of renewal. Since it was getting late, the BCCI had put the two venues in Gujarat on standby and then allotted the games to them. However, the Rajasthan High Court on Friday directed the sports council and the RCA to come to an agreement for the larger good of the cricket-loving public in Jaipur. So on Sunday, they signed an MoU for five years. RCA paid them Rs 1 crore immediately and handed over eight post-dated cheques of Rs 20 lakh each as rent for IPL games. As a result, the RCA were handed over the possession of the stadium on Monday. RCA curator Taposh Chatterjee had been working along with his team of groundstff to get the venue in shape for the Royals’ first home game, against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on April 8.While Rajasthan Royals chief executive Raghu Iyer welcomed the move, saying Jaipur “has always been the preferred home ground for Royals”, he said that it would be the BCCI who will be the final authority. The BCCI will take a final call after inspecting the stadium in “around a fortnight’s time”.

Down to PCB to convince other nations – Richardson

Dave Richardson, the ICC CEO, has said the ICC has a limited role to play in the resumption of international cricket in Pakistan

Dave Richardson, the ICC CEO, has said the ICC has a limited role to play in the resumption of international cricket in Pakistan and it will be down to the PCB to convince other nations that it is safe to play cricket in the country.”Security is not something that is taken lightly by anybody,” Richardson, who was in Pakistan for the PCB awards ceremony, said. “Making a decision as to whether it’s safe or not involves a serious assessment of the risk. The ICC is not in a position to do [security assessment]. It’s up to the member countries to decide. They have to take advice from their own security advisors and make decisions themselves.”The bottom line is that the ICC views Pakistan as a very important part of international cricket,” he said. “Pakistan is going through difficult times through no fault of the PCB. It’s our role to support Pakistan in its efforts to make sure that international cricket returns to Pakistan. As soon as possible is what everyone would like, but it’s difficult to say exactly when and I think that’s about as much as far as we can go at this stage.”Pakistan has remained a no-go country for international teams since the attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in 2009. In the past three years, Pakistan have played their ‘home’ series mostly in the UAE but reciprocal series at the junior level are on hold.Though the PCB has been desperate to revive international cricket, the efforts so far haven’t yielded any positive results. The PCB relies heavily on the government to arrange security for the visiting teams, but last year it sanctioned the purchase of bulletproof buses. Apart from working on security protocols, the PCB has been working on identifying potential new venues across the country and upgrading them to international standards. The board is also lobbying hard to win back the confidence of the teams.”Coming from a country [South Africa] which was out of international cricket for a very large period of my career, I know that if you concentrate on your domestic cricket and you make sure you encourage people to play the game even if it’s at first-class level you can reap tremendous rewards and in fact negative can turn into a positive and at the end of it all you might find that Pakistan cricket is much stronger than it was even before these difficult times.”Richardson also visited the National Cricket Academy where he was briefed about the developments in Pakistan cricket and PCB’s plans with regards to promotion and management of the game in the country.”The initiatives that PCB has put in place over the last 12 months or so I think it’s the correct way to go,” Richardson said and added that the recent “revival of ties with India” is a step in the right direction as the ties between the two countries are critical for world cricket.”The announcement of the Twenty20 competition [PSL] where foreign players will be entitled to come and play if available, again that is, I think, an initiative on the right path because what you’ve got to do is to regain the confidence of cricketing world and I think that’s a very sensible step in the right direction.”

Manoj Tiwary has been ruled out of action for at least six weeks after suffering a back injury in the Ranji Trophy. The injury means he will miss the Twenty20 series against England, the visit of Pakistan and could struggle to be in contention for the ODIs against England in January.Tiwary, the 27-year-old Bengal captain who had been named in India’s 15-man squad for the England T20s, picked up the problem during the first innings against Saurashtra on Sunday and retired hurt for 55. He was unable to return and underwent scans which showed the extent of the damage and he will now travel to the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore to begin his rehabilitation.”The MRI report has come and I am leaving for Bangalore tomorrow,” he told PTI. “I will follow what physio Nitin Patel tells me to do once he checks the report. As of now it looks like six weeks.”Tiwary has shown some good form this season, scoring 191 against Gujarat in the Ranji Trophy and also made 93 against England for the Board President’s XI last month. This is the second injury he has suffered in quick succession after a wrist problem earlier in the season. He has not been a regular in the India starting XI, playing eight ODIs and three Twenty20s, since his debut in 2008. His most recent appearance was the T20 against New Zealand, in Chennai, during September. He was part of India’s World Twenty20 squad for the tournament in Sri Lanka.

Tendulkar, Zaheer to play Mumbai's first Ranji game

Ranji Trophy has received a big boost with the selection of Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan for Mumbai’s first match

Ranji Trophy has received a big boost with the selection of Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan for Mumbai’s first match, against Railways at Wankhede Stadium. The season kicks off on November 2, and it is understood that both Tendulkar and Zaheer wanted to get some first-class match time before the Test series against England, which begins on November 15. Ajit Agarkar had already been named captain for the first four Mumbai games. Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane are the other attractions in the strong 13-member Mumbai squad, to go with domestic warhorses Ramesh Powar and Abhishek Nayar.Tendulkar’s last Ranji Trophy appearance was Mumbai’s final win in 2008-09. Apart from being Mumbai’s 38th Ranji title, the match is also remembered for Tendulkar’s first first-class duck in Indian domestic cricket. Tendulkar has been going through a lean patch in Test cricket. His last century came in January 2011, and despite looking in good touch in Australia, he didn’t score more than 80 in an innings. When he was bowled three times in three innings against New Zealand, former cricketers and commentators, including Sunil Gavaskar, showed concern over his form.Having played in the Champions League T20 after the New Zealand series, Tendulkar showed eagerness to play some first-class cricket before the big Test season ahead. India play four Tests each against England and Australia.Zaheer last played for Mumbai just before leaving for Australia last year. He, too, hasn’t been in great form since India’s World Cup win in 2011. He last took a Test five-for in October 2010. His fitness and endurance have been a concern too. He has played only seven Tests since the World Cup, breaking down in England.Wasim Jaffer, Suryakumar Yadav and Harmeet Singh were the significant names names missing in the Mumbai squad. Jaffer, the all-time leading run-getter in Ranji Trophy, has asked for leave for Haj pilgrimage. Harmeet is out with a finger injury. Yadav will lead the MCA XI against England A in a tour game that will clash with the Ranji season opener. Consider all these uncertainties, the Mumbai selectors have named the squad only for the first match.Mumbai squad Ajit Agarkar (capt.), Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, Ramesh Poawr, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Abhishek Nayar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Ankeet Chavan, Kaustubh Pawar, Iqbal Abdulla, Aditya Tare (wk), Akhil Herwadkar (wk)

Dexter strikes telling blows

Not many people included Neil Dexter in their list of daunting seamers. Yet Dexter, a gentle medium-pacer who had never taken more than three wickets in a first-class innings before today, produced a remarkable spell of five wickets for 13 runs in 21 ball

ScorecardNeil Dexter was an unlikely destroyer of the Nottinghamshire batting•Middlesex CCC

Ahead of this season it was accepted by most observers that Middlesex had a daunting seam attack that could, on its day, hurt any opposition. By the time they play their next game, against Derbyshire at home, they could have Steven Finn, James Harris, Toby Roland-Jones, Tim Murtagh and Corey Collymore fighting over places. But not many people included Neil Dexter in their list of daunting seamers. Yet Dexter, a gentle medium-pacer who had never taken more than three wickets in a first-class innings before today, produced a remarkable spell of 5 for 13 in 21 balls to give his side an outstanding opportunity of striking an early blow in the race for the County Championship title. In a match full of punch and counter punch, Dexter may have struck the decisive blow with a spell of bowling that reduced Nottinghamshire to 93 for 8 in their second innings – a lead of just 28 runs. It was a session of cricket that was as unlikely as it was entertaining.Dexter may well not have bowled had Middlesex been at full strength. As it was, though, James Harris did not take the field when Nottinghamshire began their second innings due to a minor hamstring strain and, after long opening spells from Murtagh and Roland-Jones, during which Ed Cowan, stuck in the crease, lost his off stump to one that nipped back and Michael Lumb completed a pair after planting his front foot and missing another that nipped back, Middlesex were obliged to turn to Gareth Berg – described as 80 percent fit – and Dexter. While it was Berg who made the initial breakthrough – Alex Hales edging a beauty that left him late – it was Dexter who proved the destroyer. Perhaps his first couple of wickets owed a little to fortune: Samit Patel, quite recklessly, attempted a furious pull that resulted in a top edge to midwicket, before James Taylor tried to cut a short, wide ball only for it to die on him and result in a thin edge to the keeper. Andy Flower, the England coach who had just arrived at the ground to chat to Stuart Broad, cannot have been impressed. But from then on, Dexter bowled with skill and discipline. Riki Wessels, batting with a runner due to a hamstring strain, edged a good one that left him before Chris Read, set up by outswing, left one that came back in off the seam. Ajmal Shahzad also followed an outswinger. At that stage, a result in three days seemed likely.Dexter remains as club captain but, after a loss of form and some personal issues last year, stepped down from the Championship position. While he insisted he wants “to take over captaincy in the near future” he also admitted that he was “a lot more relaxed cricketer without the burden of leadership”.The one blot on Dexter’s day was the failure to catch Andre Adams when the batsman had 28. Running in from the square leg boundary, Dexter appeared to have a tricky chance off Roland-Jones under control only to spill it as he hit the ground. It may yet prove a costly miss.Adams, in typically belligerent style, thumped his way to a half-century in 37 balls. He pulled the next two deliveries he received after his reprieve – both from the unfortunate and flagging Roland-Jones for six and, in partnership with the increasingly elegant Luke Fletcher added 89 runs for Nottinghamshire’s ninth wicket. While Adams thrashed at anything close to him, Fletcher showed some genuine class and hinted that, in time, he could move a couple of places up the order. The lead, 107 by the close, should still not be enough, but Middlesex will be far more nervous than they might have been when they begin their fourth-innings pursuit.”Chasing 100 can be pretty nasty,” Adams said afterwards. “There are still dents in the wicket and the ball is moving about in the air and off the pitch. If we set them somewhere between 150 and 170, we have a real chance. Anything over 120 could be a bit tricky. They will be nervous.”The story of Adams’ arrival at Nottinghamshire is remarkable. By 2007, he had decided to give up on cricket. “I wanted to do anything but play cricket,” he said. “I hated it.”So when he received a phone call from an agent saying he had been offered a county contract, he was quick to turn it down. “I said I wasn’t interested,” Adams told ESPNcricinfo. “But then the next morning he called again and said ‘I’ve sorted it’. I didn’t know what to think.”But it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made; the best mistake I’ve ever made. I would only ever have come to Nottinghamshire anyway, as I knew a few of the lads and I had played club cricket here. It’s been great.”Earlier John Simpson was left stranded three short of what would have been his first Championship century since April 2011. Although Simpson eased the second ball of the day through midwicket for four, he then became bogged down against an improved Nottinghamshire attack and took 53 deliveries over his next 16 runs. All the while wickets were falling at the other end. Ollie Rayner, Harris and Toby Roland-Jones were also seduced into driving at balls that left them and Simpson, on 97 when the last wicket fell, made the selfless decision not to farm the strike when the last man Murtagh came to the crease. While Simpson could be forgiven for cursing under his breath when Murtagh fell to a footless waft, he could feel satisfied at the strong position he had earned his team.
