Tendulkar, Zaheer to play Mumbai's first Ranji game

Ranji Trophy has received a big boost with the selection of Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan for Mumbai’s first match

Ranji Trophy has received a big boost with the selection of Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan for Mumbai’s first match, against Railways at Wankhede Stadium. The season kicks off on November 2, and it is understood that both Tendulkar and Zaheer wanted to get some first-class match time before the Test series against England, which begins on November 15. Ajit Agarkar had already been named captain for the first four Mumbai games. Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane are the other attractions in the strong 13-member Mumbai squad, to go with domestic warhorses Ramesh Powar and Abhishek Nayar.Tendulkar’s last Ranji Trophy appearance was Mumbai’s final win in 2008-09. Apart from being Mumbai’s 38th Ranji title, the match is also remembered for Tendulkar’s first first-class duck in Indian domestic cricket. Tendulkar has been going through a lean patch in Test cricket. His last century came in January 2011, and despite looking in good touch in Australia, he didn’t score more than 80 in an innings. When he was bowled three times in three innings against New Zealand, former cricketers and commentators, including Sunil Gavaskar, showed concern over his form.Having played in the Champions League T20 after the New Zealand series, Tendulkar showed eagerness to play some first-class cricket before the big Test season ahead. India play four Tests each against England and Australia.Zaheer last played for Mumbai just before leaving for Australia last year. He, too, hasn’t been in great form since India’s World Cup win in 2011. He last took a Test five-for in October 2010. His fitness and endurance have been a concern too. He has played only seven Tests since the World Cup, breaking down in England.Wasim Jaffer, Suryakumar Yadav and Harmeet Singh were the significant names names missing in the Mumbai squad. Jaffer, the all-time leading run-getter in Ranji Trophy, has asked for leave for Haj pilgrimage. Harmeet is out with a finger injury. Yadav will lead the MCA XI against England A in a tour game that will clash with the Ranji season opener. Consider all these uncertainties, the Mumbai selectors have named the squad only for the first match.Mumbai squad Ajit Agarkar (capt.), Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, Ramesh Poawr, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Abhishek Nayar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Ankeet Chavan, Kaustubh Pawar, Iqbal Abdulla, Aditya Tare (wk), Akhil Herwadkar (wk)

Tredwell traditions leave South Africa stumped

England made steady, if not entirely trouble-free, progress towards a victory that would put them 2-1 up with one to play and secure their hold on No. 1 in the ODI rankings

The Report by David Hopps02-Sep-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsIan Bell played some elegant stokes to steer England’s path to victory•PA Photos

Stumped Kieswetter bowled Tredwell is hardly the commonest entry on England scorecards, but it dominated proceedings at Lord’s as England took a 2-1 lead against South Africa in the NatWest series with one to play and as a result ensured they would complete the series at the top of the ODI rankings. India will have the opportunity to claim that status when they face England in January.Three times, James Tredwell lured a South Africa batsman down the pitch and three times Craig Kieswetter completed a stumping. It was the first time an England wicketkeeper had pulled off three stumpings in a one-day international and it set them en route to a comprehensive six-wicket victory with 20 balls to spare.Ian Bell, with 88 from 137 balls, ensured England’s run chase would stay on course, a task not entirely straightforward with the floodlights piercing the gloom and mizzle causing a 20-minute stoppage. He fell with victory in sight, making room to cut Dale Steyn, South Africa’s one bowler of menace, over the off side and edging to the wicketkeeper, his man-of-the-match award assured. Craig Kieswetter completed victory to cheers by depositing Steyn fox six into the pavilion.Bell’s Warwickshire team mate, Jonathan Trott offered, grim, indeed grimacing, support, in a second-wicket stand of 141 in 31 overs, batting on gamely for 48 after being struck on the hand during a fiery opening spell from Steyn, who also removed Alastair Cook lbw in his first over with a high-class inswinger. Trott, not as much as a Bear with a sore head as a Bear with a sore hand, will have a hospital scan on Monday morning.Trott took a blow on the hand in Steyn’s third over and needed pain-killing spray and tablets as he batted on manfully in obvious discomfort. One uppercut over point off Tsotsobe Lonwabo was followed by a curse at the discomfort and he settled for wise deflections thereafter. Not that it would have unduly bothered him.Like Trott, Tredwell is a representative of an unglamorous species. His very appearance, unassuming in manner, deliberate in tread and economical of hair, accentuates the impression. He does not even deal in Graeme Swann’s happy brand of kidology. But South Africa will give more attention to this thoughtful Kent cricketer after his figures of 3 for 34 gave England an advantage they never relinquished. It was an influential toss for England to win on a murky, overcast September morning. Their catching and fielding was again sketchy, but at least the Tredwell/Kieswetter combination was working well. JP Duminy, who had looked fallible against Swann’s off spin earlier in the summer, was the first batsman removed, in Tredwell’s second over. Then he returned in his second spell to defeat de Villiers’ expansive drive and extended the habit by finding appreciable turn past Wayne Parnell’s outside edge.Tredwell’s success transformed his morning. He has the convivial air of a suburban doctor and any self-diagnosis changed from feeling decidedly poorly to tip-top condition. He began by dropping Hashim Amla at second slip, not a habit designed to make winning cricket matches any easier. Amla had 5 when Finn found the edge and Tredwell, fingers pointing downwards as the ball reached him at shoulder height, fumbled a chance he made more awkward than it might have been. England have been dropping Amla throughout the summer and have given him more than 500 additional runs since the start of the Test series. Here they also lose their review in attempting to have an lbw call overturned.Ravi Bopara, who was unfortunate not to have Amla lbw, belatedly removed him for 45, seaming the ball back a little into the stumps as he defeated a loose drive. It was the sort of classically English late-season day when Bopara’s wobbly medium pace had an influential role to play. But Bopara’s batting was again found wanting, an unfocused innings ending cheaply when Ryan McLaren defeated a lethargic drive.Tredwell, the latest addition to a rickety England close-catching cordon, also missed Graeme Smith at slip off Finn when Kieswetter dived across him and unsettled his view, the ball striking him on the body; they were a happier couple when they were a length of the pitch apart. Smith’s reprieve was not too costly for England as Dernbach surprised him with a bouncer which he top-edged through to the keeper.Once he and Amla departed, many who followed lacked the same threat. De Villiers, with 39 from 45 balls, got himself into a position to play a decisive innings before Tredwell pushed one a little wider for the stumping, but Faf du Plessis is horribly out of form as he proved when he unwisely tried to run a ball from Bopara against the Lord’s slope.Elgar is another South Africa batsman who has been inhibited in English conditions. His 35 occupied 59 balls before he tried to pull Finn’s slower-ball bouncer and gloved to the keeper. Ryan McLaren was run out the next ball, Finn’s disappointment when a good appeal for lbw was refused turning to delight when Dernbach dashed around the boundary at third man and hit the stumps direct. That South Africa made as many as they did was largely thanks to a highly-imaginative unbeaten 31 from 20 balls by Robin Peterson, the highlight of which was a reverse hit over extra cover for six into the Grandstand. But South Africa’s one-day side lacks the balance and certainty that the Test XI displayed so emphatically.

Chapple five sees Lancs qualify

Glen Chapple claimed five wickets and Oliver Newby made key contributions with bat and ball as Lancashire secured a place in the Clydesdale Bank 40 semi-finals with an 18-run win over Gloucestershire at Bristol.Evergreen captain Chapple returned 5 for 26 as the home side were bowled out for 164, James Fuller making a valiant 43. But Newby was equally responsible for his side’s success.First the 27-year-old seamer top-scored with 36 not out, batting at No. 9, to boost Lancashire’s total from a meagre 117 for 7 to 182 for 9 after winning the toss. Newby then claimed the important wicket of Alex Gidman just as the Gloucestershire captain was threatening to rescue his side from a poor start. The result puts Lancashire on 16 points in Group A, with two matches still to play, and meant they cannot be overtaken. It also eliminated Gloucestershire, who are on 11 points, with only one game left.It looked good for the home side when their opponents collapsed from 63 for 1 to 117 for 7, thanks largely to a series of loose shots. But Newby came in to hit three fours and a six, sharing a stand of 37 for the ninth wicket with Stephen Parry, who made 12.Left-arm spinner Ed Young was the pick of the Gloucestershire attack, with 2 for 25, but there were also three wickets for left-arm seamer David Payne.Chapple contributed a useful 16 towards the end of the Lancashire innings and the 38-year-old then blew away Gloucestershire’s top order, sending back Rob Nicol, Benny Howell and Dan Housego in taking 3 for 8 from four overs.Ajmal Shahzad had already seen off Hamish Marshall and at 16 for 4 Gloucestershire were in disarray. But Alex Gidman looked in prime form as he counter-attacked with four boundaries in an over from Shahzad, including three from successive balls. He was looking a real danger to Lancashire when Newby had him picked up at cover, having faced only 26 balls for his 36.It was 75 for 6 when Ian Cockbain top-edged a sweep off Gary Keedy to be caught at deep square. But Will Gidman (32) and Fuller added 55 to give Gloucestershire hope before Gidman was stumped off the bowling of Steven Croft. Fuller almost turned the game around, but Chapple returned to remove Young and Jon Batty before Shahzad had Fuller caught behind to end the game.

Estou me adaptando com o Everton, Paquetá, Pará…

– finalizou o volante.

Best ready for West Indies opportunity

Tino Best has described himself as fit and ready to return to action for West Indies, three years after he last played Test cricket

Tino Best has described himself as fit and ready to return to action for West Indies, three years after he last played Test cricket. The fast bowler was called into the touring party as a replacement for Shannon Gabriel, who has returned home after suffering a stress reaction in his back during defeat in the first Test against England.Best, 30, who had been named in the West Indies A team to face India A next month, was recently a member of the full squad for the limited-overs internationals against Australia but did not play. He left the Caribbean on Tuesday ahead of the second Test at Trent Bridge, which starts on Friday.”I’m very happy to be recalled for the Test squad for the series in England,” Best said. “I’ve been waiting for my opportunity to represent the West Indies again and this is another opportunity to wear the Baggy Maroon.””I’m fit and feeling quite ready. I’ve been training and working hard, looking forward to this. I was in the team earlier this year when we played against Australia and I gained a lot of knowledge from being in the group. I felt I fitted in quite well and I have a good idea of the work ethic and what will be required of me.”With Fidel Edwards, Kemar Roach and Ravi Rampaul all suffering niggles, Best could make an unexpected Test comeback, even if West Indies decide to pick the offspinner Shane Shillingford, as the tourists look to build on an encouraging but ultimately unsuccessful performance at Lord’s. Best is familiar with English conditions, having toured with the West Indies in 2004 and played for Yorkshire in 2010.”What I have to do, and what I am fully aware of, is how to put that knowledge to work,” he said. “I’m a hard worker and I’m really delighted to get this opportunity.”Edited by Alan Gardner

'It doesn't need to be pretty' – Steyn

Dale Steyn has admitted to a win-at-all-costs attitude on the tour of England, knowing that victory will end years of being second-best and give South Africa the No. 1 Test ranking.

Dale Steyn has admitted to a win-at-all-costs attitude on the tour of England, knowing that victory will end years of being second-best and give South Africa the No. 1 Test ranking.South Africa have been top of the ICC Test rankings only briefly in the past, for four months back in 2008, but have hovered close by since then. With an unbeaten record away from home since 2006, Steyn believes it is time for the team to stamp their authority.”We don’t care how the series goes, as long as we win,” Steyn said in Canterbury, where South Africa are facing Kent in their final warm-up before the first Test at The Oval. “It doesn’t need to be pretty, it doesn’t need to be beautiful with guys scoring hundreds and guys taking five-fors. We just want to get the job done.”The contest between the two bowling attacks has been the most anticipated match-up of the series and while he would not draw a comparison, Steyn called South Africa’s current pack “fantastic.”Graeme Smith, the Test captain, has also hailed the unit as one of the best he has worked with and attributed consistency in selection to their fine performances of late. “We’ve got experience and the guys know how to bowl in different conditions,” Steyn said. “It’s also been the same group of guys for quite a while and there’s a lot of trust between us.”Although Steyn is often referred to as the kingpin of the attack, he denied that there is any hierarchy among the bowlers in contrast to England where Jimmy Anderson is widely perceived to be the guiding force in the group. He expresses the belief that the likes of Morne Morkel, Lopsy Tsotsobe, Vernon Philander and the leg spinner Imran Tahir share equal responsibility.”There’s nobody that leads the attack. If you are looking for a leader, you’re always looking for the guys that have been around the longest but when it comes to bowling, any of us are capable of doing the job,” Steyn said. “It’s not like we are looking at a leader to stand up and take five wickets for us on the day. Whether its Morne or Lopsy or Imran, all of them are capable of bowling teams out by themselves.”Despite that confidence in his team mates, Steyn remains the go-to man when Smith needs wickets because of his superior speed.”There are times when my team needs me to bowl really fast and make something happen. You need those types of players who can break an end open for you,” Steyn said. “That’s something that I’ve got in my arsenal that Graeme treasures. When we need a wicket, he tends to throw the ball to me because I can make it happen with pace.”It showed in the tour match against Kent, when Smith brought Steyn on to break an opening stand which had grown to 81. Steyn had an appeal in his first over and got a wicket in his second. But Steyn knows that with that expectation there is responsibility as well. “I also need to be bowling in the right areas. You can’t bowl at 150 and be bowling it all over the show, that’s not going to help.” Even though wicket-taking is always on his mind, Steyn said he has no preference for which scalps he picks up and has not identified any of the England batsman specifically as a prized scalp.”I’ve seen South Africa on previous tours where I haven’t played for them in Australia and Glenn McGrath and Mike Hussey put on 150-run partnership and the value of that tenth wicket means a lot more than the ninth one,” he said. “It just shows you that you can’t put too much emphasis on one particular person, you have to worry about everything.”He also does not mind if the spoils are shared as long as the team benefits. “Even if I only take one wicket in the whole series, as long as we win, I will still be on the balcony with a big smile on my face and I will be stoked,” he said. This South African squad sound a focused bunch with common purpose. But, Steyn said, they also have a bigger picture in mind. Mark Boucher’s serious eye injury which forced him to retire on Tuesday still hangs heavily on everyone.”Everyone is going on and on about being the No. 1 Test side in the world but when one of my friends possibly loses an eye and his whole life is about to change that means so much more to me than any cricket game that I will ever play,” he said. “Having said that, I am here to play cricket so I have to focus on that. Reality struck down hard when that happened and it just put things into perspective.”The team have not specifically adopted a “do it for Mark” strategy, according to Steyn, but will try to pay tribute to the veteran wicket-keeper in the best way they can. “We wanted to win this series before the incident. However, it does add a little extra inspiration or motivation because Mark would have wanted to stand on that podium.”

Ansiedade no Santa
