Dale Steyn has admitted to a win-at-all-costs attitude on the tour of England, knowing that victory will end years of being second-best and give South Africa the No. 1 Test ranking.South Africa have been top of the ICC Test rankings only briefly in the past, for four months back in 2008, but have hovered close by since then. With an unbeaten record away from home since 2006, Steyn believes it is time for the team to stamp their authority.”We don’t care how the series goes, as long as we win,” Steyn said in Canterbury, where South Africa are facing Kent in their final warm-up before the first Test at The Oval. “It doesn’t need to be pretty, it doesn’t need to be beautiful with guys scoring hundreds and guys taking five-fors. We just want to get the job done.”The contest between the two bowling attacks has been the most anticipated match-up of the series and while he would not draw a comparison, Steyn called South Africa’s current pack “fantastic.”Graeme Smith, the Test captain, has also hailed the unit as one of the best he has worked with and attributed consistency in selection to their fine performances of late. “We’ve got experience and the guys know how to bowl in different conditions,” Steyn said. “It’s also been the same group of guys for quite a while and there’s a lot of trust between us.”Although Steyn is often referred to as the kingpin of the attack, he denied that there is any hierarchy among the bowlers in contrast to England where Jimmy Anderson is widely perceived to be the guiding force in the group. He expresses the belief that the likes of Morne Morkel, Lopsy Tsotsobe, Vernon Philander and the leg spinner Imran Tahir share equal responsibility.”There’s nobody that leads the attack. If you are looking for a leader, you’re always looking for the guys that have been around the longest but when it comes to bowling, any of us are capable of doing the job,” Steyn said. “It’s not like we are looking at a leader to stand up and take five wickets for us on the day. Whether its Morne or Lopsy or Imran, all of them are capable of bowling teams out by themselves.”Despite that confidence in his team mates, Steyn remains the go-to man when Smith needs wickets because of his superior speed.”There are times when my team needs me to bowl really fast and make something happen. You need those types of players who can break an end open for you,” Steyn said. “That’s something that I’ve got in my arsenal that Graeme treasures. When we need a wicket, he tends to throw the ball to me because I can make it happen with pace.”It showed in the tour match against Kent, when Smith brought Steyn on to break an opening stand which had grown to 81. Steyn had an appeal in his first over and got a wicket in his second. But Steyn knows that with that expectation there is responsibility as well. “I also need to be bowling in the right areas. You can’t bowl at 150 and be bowling it all over the show, that’s not going to help.” Even though wicket-taking is always on his mind, Steyn said he has no preference for which scalps he picks up and has not identified any of the England batsman specifically as a prized scalp.”I’ve seen South Africa on previous tours where I haven’t played for them in Australia and Glenn McGrath and Mike Hussey put on 150-run partnership and the value of that tenth wicket means a lot more than the ninth one,” he said. “It just shows you that you can’t put too much emphasis on one particular person, you have to worry about everything.”He also does not mind if the spoils are shared as long as the team benefits. “Even if I only take one wicket in the whole series, as long as we win, I will still be on the balcony with a big smile on my face and I will be stoked,” he said. This South African squad sound a focused bunch with common purpose. But, Steyn said, they also have a bigger picture in mind. Mark Boucher’s serious eye injury which forced him to retire on Tuesday still hangs heavily on everyone.”Everyone is going on and on about being the No. 1 Test side in the world but when one of my friends possibly loses an eye and his whole life is about to change that means so much more to me than any cricket game that I will ever play,” he said. “Having said that, I am here to play cricket so I have to focus on that. Reality struck down hard when that happened and it just put things into perspective.”The team have not specifically adopted a “do it for Mark” strategy, according to Steyn, but will try to pay tribute to the veteran wicket-keeper in the best way they can. “We wanted to win this series before the incident. However, it does add a little extra inspiration or motivation because Mark would have wanted to stand on that podium.”

Whatmore hopes for strong start

Dav Whatmore, Pakistan’s new coach, has said he wants to make a good start in the four-nation Asia Cup, following Pakistan’s dismal performance against England in the one-dayers

Dav Whatmore, Pakistan’s new coach, has said he wants to make a good start in the four-nation Asia Cup, following Pakistan’s dismal performance against England in the one-dayers. A 15-man squad gathered in Karachi before departing for Dhaka for the four-nation tournament starting on March 11.”The Asia Cup is a very important tournament given the opposition,” Whatmore told reporters. “Overall it’s a difficult assignment so it is one of the many tests around and it’s good to be the part of it and I am looking forward to it.”Pakistan have a poor record in the Asia Cup – winning the title once since the event first took place in 1984, while India have lifted the cup the most times (five), followed by Sri Lanka (four). But the event carries a unique importance due to a high-profile India v Pakistan contest. Pakistan will play their first match against Bangladesh on Sunday and take on Sri Lanka on March 15, before going head-to-head with arch-rivals India on March 18.Whatmore has toned down the hype, suggesting that the match is similar to the others in the event. “We understand there’s an extra bit of interest attached to the fixture against India and it’s good for the game, people and for the players but we are treating it as any other match.”Whatmore, the 57-year-old former Australia batsman who coached Sri Lanka to a World Cup title in 1996, took charge on Saturday on a two-year contract, with his first assignment in Dhaka. Pakistan will land in Bangladesh having conceded 4-0 and 2-1 defeats in the one-day and T20 matches against England in the United Arab Emirates last month.”That was a little bit not in the script and I am sure the team wants to make amends,” Whatmore said. “Certainly they had terrific Test series and that was a little bit of a surprise but that’s the way it goes some time. We are not looking back and look to put our best foot forward and work on those areas where we can improve and rectify.”Everyone starts the game at a level playing field. It’s important that we are able to focus on what we are capable of doing – respect the opposition but we focus on what we can do – we can’t make the opposition do anything different.”Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq was confident his team can bounce back. “We failed to perform at our best against England,” Misbah said. “But the team will not repeat the same mistakes again. There is nothing to be worried after the failure against England because the same team has performed well in the last one-and a-half years.”

Worcestershire have confirmed that Saeed Ajmal will not be able to join them for the Friends Life t20 due to international commitments with Pakistan.ESPNcricinfo reported earlier this month that Ajmal would have to pull out of his contract because of Pakistan’s tour of Sri Lanka and that trip is now set to take place between late May and mid-July. The FLt20 tournament begins on June 12 with the group stages finishing on July 8.Ajmal played for Worcestershire last year and was their best bowler in the FLt20. He claimed 16 wickets in eight games, conceding fewer than six runs an over and averaging 11.37 per wicket.Worcestershire’s director of cricket, Steve Rhodes, said: “Losing a player of Saeed’s quality is a big disappointment, however, we are extremely active in finding a replacement for the t20.”Ajmal’s Pakistan team-mate Junaid Khan, the left-arm fast bowler, is still waiting to find out whether he will be given permission to join Lancashire for the second half of the season including the FLt20.

Visando o G4, Atlético-GO recebe a Ponte Preta pela Série B

Atlético-GO: Jefferson; Jonathan, Oliveira, Gilvan e Bruno Santos; Pedro Bambu, Rômulo e João Paulo; Renato Kayser, Denilson (André Luis) e Júlio César.

PCB grant Akram one-month extension

Mohammad Akram, the Pakistan bowling coach, has received a one-month extension by the PCB so he can continue his role in the upcoming South Africa series in the UAE

Mohammad Akram has overseen the development of Mohammad Irfan and Junaid Khan•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Mohammad Akram, the Pakistan bowling coach, has got a one-month extension that will allow him to carry out his job for the upcoming South Africa series in the UAE. His original one-year contract ended after the Zimbabwe series.Moin Khan, the former Pakistan wicketkeeper, has also been named as manager for the tour. The recently concluded tour of Zimbabwe was his first assignment.”We have extended his contract for another month,” a PCB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo. “It is a decision amid the ongoing caretaker setup, in which the board cannot appoint nor make a call to terminate anyone’s services in the light of the Islamabad High Court order. So, Akram will join Pakistan’s squad next month in the UAE for the South Africa series.”His services were acquired following the ouster of Aaqib Javed, who resigned to be UAE’s head coach after the series against England in 2012. He has been with the national side since the limited-overs series against Australia in the UAE, and has so far covered five Tests, 25 ODIs and 16 T20Is. During his stint as bowling coach, he oversaw the international debuts of Rahat Ali, Mohammad Irfan, Ehsan Adil and Asad Ali.His influence on bowlers like Irfan and Junaid was quite evident when the duo dominated in the limited-overs series in India and, later on, during the South Africa tour.Akram, who played nine Tests and 23 ODIs for Pakistan between 1995 and 2001, is settled in England and has represented Essex, Sussex, Surrey and Northamptonshire. He played 125 matches and picked up 415 wickets in his 15-year first-class career. However, he hasn’t been involved with any of the first-class teams in England and Pakistan in a coaching capacity.”Working in Pakistan is a big challenge,” Akram said earlier this year. “You have an extensive crop of fast bowlers around the country, but things aren’t as fertile as it used to be. We, though, have a history of big names like Sarfaraz Nawaz, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, but they are past now and we have a new era here with completely different bowlers. The tone of the cricket itself has changed immensely.”We have a nice decent bunch for international cricket and the future with them is entire[ly] secure. It’s bit unfair comparing them to the previous great like Wasim-Waqar because you can’t have th[at] sort of bowler back again. They were unique and expecting the current lot is not good. They [currently] are good bowlers, and with more international exposure, they can be great in the longer-run. I am working with all the new bunch on top. Even went down at the grass root level to [gain some] insight about the upcoming bowlers, and I am satisfied.”Akram also ran an extensive programme with the regional coaches of the country. “The idea was to let the region understand how important there role is to build a fast bowler at the grass-root[s]. We aren’t running out of any stock, that is for sure. We are actually lacking in the development of the player. What we need to understand [is] that we have to built a solid foundation at the basic level so that once the player graduated up to the national level, he must be a ready-made bowler [for] the country.”
