Sky share Milner update out of Liverpool

Speaking live on air, via Football Daily, Sky Sports have shared their own update on James Milner’s contract situation at Liverpool before Wednesday’s trip to Inter.

The Lowdown: Milner claims emerge…

Just recently, rumours surfaced of a fresh new deal offer on the table for Liverpool’s veteran midfielder.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/liverpool-latest-developments/” title=”Liverpool latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, as reported by transfer journalist and big name source Fabrizio Romano, the Anfield side are apparently locked in talks over fresh terms for Milner following the personal request of manager Jurgen Klopp.

The 36-year-old and Liverpool will apparently continue discussions over the next few weeks/months as attention now switches to Milner’s side.

Sky, sharing their own update, have slightly different news to report.

The Latest: Sky share Milner update…

According to the broadcast giant, via FD, Liverpool do indeed want to extend Milner’s deal – but no offer or talks have come to pass at this stage.

“Just want to bring you some news about James Milner,” Sky explained on live TV.

Jurgen Klopp has asked Liverpool to open talks with the England midfielder about a new contract.

“We’re told that there have been no discussions so far with the player’s representatives, so reports today that the club have made him an offer appear to be wide of the mark.”

The Verdict: Get it done?

Klopp wanting to keep Milner for another season on Merseyside speaks volumes over his ability and attitude behind-the-scenes.

Despite entering the twilight phase of his career, Liverpool’s ace has been used fairly regularly, making 16 Premier League appearances in total this season (WhoScored).

In that time, Milner has grabbed an assist whilst averaging the joint-fifth most tackles per 90 out of Liverpool’s squad (WhoScored) – proving himself a capable back-up option for Klopp.

Bearing this in mind, Liverpool have little to lose in granting their manager’s wish and agreeing a short extension with the player.

Celtic told to seal new deal for Tom Rogic

Celtic should make it ‘a priority’ to secure a new contract for Tom Rogic, according to journalist Andy Newport.

The lowdown

The Australian midfielder joined Celtic in 2013 in a £432,000 move from A-League outfit Central Coast Mariners. He has gone on to make 254 appearances for the club, winning the Premiership six times and racking up 10 cup medals as well.

The 29-year-old has now entered the final 18 months of his £15,000-per-week contract at Parkhead.

He has been in fine form of late, with eight goals and assists in his last seven appearances. On Sunday, he scored twice as Celtic routed Motherwell 4-0 to remain top of the Premiership.

The latest

As part of The Daily Record’s ‘Monday Jury’, Newport and his colleagues were asked how important it was for Celtic to renew Rogic’s deal.

He duly replied: “There were plenty ready to write Rogic off last season but he’s always been one of the most gifted players in Scotland and Postecoglou’s arrival has brought him back to his best. At 29, he’s still got a few more years at the top left in him so a new deal should be a priority.”

Newport’s colleague Michael Gannon added: “It would be handy for Celtic to have an insurance policy for the Aussie as there are bound to be clubs looking at him again. He looked done at Parkhead but is now on another level.”

The verdict

Rogic’s upturn in form during the 2021/22 campaign has been striking. Last term, he only managed two goals and five assists in 31 appearances across all competitions, but he has doubled that goal contribution output (five goals, nine assists) in just over half a season under Ange Postecoglou.

Gannon’s statement that the 29-year-old ‘looked done’ at Celtic before his compatriot took over as manager illustrates Rogic’s turnaround in fortunes, as does Newport’s observation that ‘there were plenty ready’ to write him off.

Having responded superbly, the Australian deserves to be rewarded with improved terms, keeping him at Celtic for his remaining years at the top of his game.

Finn and Strauss secure eight-wicket victory

In the end England’s eight-wicket victory came with ease on the final afternoon at Lord’s as they comfortably chased down 160 following Steven Finn’s first five-wicket haul in Test cricket

In the end England’s eight-wicket victory came with ease on the final afternoon at Lord’s as they comfortably chased down 160 following Steven Finn’s first five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Andrew Strauss guided the pursuit with a confident 82 after the visitors’ last five wickets fell for 35 under cloudy skies against Finn and Tim Bresnan, yet they have done much to enhance their standing over the last five days. With the ball new and the morning overcast the odds were always against Bangladesh delaying England long enough to put the result in serious doubt. It took ten overs to make the breakthrough but they then chipped away regularly to wrap up the innings on the stroke of lunch. Strauss and Alastair Cook were gifted a 60-run start by some woeful bowling and negative fielding settings. The only tension was to see whether the win would come before tea. Despite Kevin Pietersen playing out a maiden from Shakib Al Hasan some scurrying from the umpires ensured it did. However, without Finn England would have had serious problems dismissing Bangladesh twice in this match. The 21-year-old has led the bowling effort in both innings, impressing with his maturity, accuracy and stamina. Strauss gave him an eight-over spell on the final morning and he responded with three further wickets to earn a place on the honours board in his first Test on his home ground.Junaid Siddique and Shakib fought hard to survive and, as often happens when pressure builds, it was one of worst deliveries that made the breakthrough when Shakib cut a wide ball straight to Eoin Morgan at point. Siddique had again resisted stubbornly while England tried to pepper him with the short ball and the tactic could well have played a part in his demise as he tried to drive with his feet planted in the crease and popped a catch to mid off. That gave Finn his fourth and this time he wasn’t going to be denied a place on the board when he produced a beauty that climbed and took Mushfiqur Rahim’s outside edge. However, he couldn’t quite claim the scalp that would have made him the first since Ian Botham in 1978 to claim a 10-wicket match haul at Lord’s.James Anderson endured a frustrating morning as his rhythm continued to improve but was unable to add to his collection. He produced a testing nine-over burst and regularly beat the outside edge, but the closest he came to a breakthrough was when Bresnan spilled a tough chance at third slip off Mahmudullah.Mahmudullah, who is batting far too low even taking into account the nightwatchman, continued the defiance shown by many of his team-mates. He and Rubel Hossain resisted for 10 overs until Bresnan found Rubel’s edge as the No. 10 tried to leave the ball. It’s been a difficult match for Bresnan, and he came in for some guarded criticism from Andy Flower on the fourth evening, but he closed the innings when Mahmudullah had a wild heave in the last over before lunch and ended with 3 for 93.While Bangladesh’s batting is making huge strides, there progress will be held back by the weak pace bowling. Shahadat Hossain’s opening over went for 11 as he sprayed the ball wide at Strauss, while Rubel and Robiul were given an over apiece before spin came on from both ends.Mahmudullah removed Cook as the left hander was given out lbw on the front foot and replays showed the ball would have gone over the stumps for the second time in the game. Strauss, though, eased to his second fifty of the match from 50 balls – nothing more than a gentle net for the captain – while Jonathan Trott eked along at his own sedate pace before Strauss was caught behind cutting with 13 needed. The final result was as expected, yet Bangladesh can take great heart from the way they took the game five days and made England dig deep. Strauss and Flower will expect their side to be far more commanding in the second, at Old Trafford, on Friday but the visitors will have ambitions to make a mark of their own.

Jahurul and Kayes set up 141-run victory

Bangladesh secured a confidence-boosting victory in their final warm-up match before the one-day series against England as they beat Middlesex by 141 runs at Lord’s. The success was set up by a 143-run stand between Jahurul Islam (88) and Imrul Kayes (77) which laid the platform for an imposing 301 for 7. The home side only briefly threatened while Owais Shah was making 61.In their opening practice match against Sussex the tourists had embarrassingly collapsed to 104 all out against a second-string attack. Middlesex also fielded a weak line-up and this time the batsmen managed to cash in to give themselves a valuable confidence boost before the first ODI, at Trent Bridge, on Thursday. The bowlers, led by Mashrafe Mortaza’s tight opening spell, then produced a solid performance as the spinners made inroads. However Jahurul, who made his Test debut against England in March, was the stand-out performer with an elegant innings and looked set for a hundred before lofting into the deep. But it was also an important performance from Kayes who had produced some turgid displays in the recent Asia Cup. Here he showed that he could find another gear as he struck three sixes in his 92-ball stay, albeit against friendly bowling. At the start of the innings all eyes were on Tamim Iqbal to see if he could reproduce the sort of display that lit up the Test match here in May when he wrote his name into the history books as the first Bangladesh century-marker at headquarters. He started brightly with a series of clumping drives as he raced to 28 off 20 balls, but then missed a wild swing across the line at Robbie Williams.Junaid Siddique, who had also impressed during that Test, fell three overs later when he clubbed a drive to mid-on to leave Bangladesh 50 for 2, but this time the innings didn’t descend into freefall. Kayes bedded in to provide the anchor, while Jahurul produced some attractive strokeplay, especially through the off side, to keep the scoreboard moving at a healthy rate. The bowling was unthreatening, but the pair maintained their concentration with Jahurul first to his fifty from a sprightly 42 deliveries then Kayes followed shortly afterwards from a more sedate 67 balls. Kayes departed when he tried to loft Toby Roland-Jones down the ground and skied a thick outside edge to backward point and Jahurul couldn’t clear the boundary either off Tom Smith’s left-arm spin.Shakib Al Hasan, replaced for this leg of tour as captain by Mortaza, made 38 and Mushfiqur Rahim hit the ball cleanly during the batting Powerplay before picking out deep square-leg as he tried to clear the Tavern boundary.Mortaza then made a breakthrough in his opening over when John Simpson dragged into his stumps and his new-ball partner, Shafiul Islam, picked up Jackson Thompson in the fourth over when the opener pulled to mid-on. Shah and Dawid Malan provided a platform for the chase as they added 87 in 14 overs, but not for the first time Shah was involved in a run out when he set off for a single then declined with Malan already committed.Shah was dropped by Mushfiqur Rahim on 57 as he charged Shakib, but two balls later the left-arm spinner had his revenge as Shah missed a sweep and was lbw. Tom Scollay’s first innings for Middlesex was an undistinguished affair which ended with a horrid swing to leg as the chase subsided with 10 overs to spare.

Matty Cash linked with Atletico transfer

Aston Villa have been particularly busy when it comes to adding new players to their squad during the January transfer window, with Calum Chambers being the latest addition.

However, with the summer transfer window in mind, it seems as though the Midlands club could be in danger of losing one of their key players.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from The Sun, Villa right-back Matty Cash is in talks with Atletico Madrid over a potential permanent move this summer, with the Spanish champions’ manager Diego Simeone keen on finding a replacement for Kieran Trippier, who joined Newcastle United earlier this month.

The report also claims that the 24-year-old is among Atletico’s top targets and that they are willing to splash out a fee in the region of £30m-£40m during the summer transfer window for the full-back, who is apparently keen on the move.

Villa signed Cash in the summer of 2020 from Championship club Nottingham Forest in a deal worth an initial fee of £14m.

The defender has since become a crucial figure for Villa by making 51 appearances across all competitions, chipping in with one goal and three assists along the way.

Fans would be furious

Having played more Premier League minutes than anyone else for Villa this season, as well as earning an overall performance rating of 6.88/10, making him the fifth-highest rated player at the club according to WhoScored, it’s safe to say that Cash is an important player for Steven Gerrard’s side. Therefore, it would surely leave a lot of fans raging if they were to offload him any time soon.

Also, with the Poland international being the only player in Villa’s senior squad at the moment who predominantly plays in the right-back position, it would be a real howler from Johan Lange to let the 24-year-old leave without finding a suitable replacement first.

While it should be a certainty that Villa would not let Cash leave during the current transfer window, it would also be in the club’s best interests to decline any offer which may come their way from Atletico or anyone interested in signing the right-back during the summer.
