James Hopes, Australia’s one-day allrounder, faces another hectic week after being chosen for Queensland’s opening match of the domestic season against Western Australia in Perth on Sunday. Hopes is part of the Champions Trophy squad in South Africa and will make an FR Cup appearance with the Bulls before rejoining the national side for their limited-overs tour of India.Australia have seven one-dayers starting from October 25 and Hopes is expected to be part of that squad. He received limited opportunities in the Champions Trophy ahead of Monday night’s final.Queensland are also on the verge of handing debuts to Alister McDermott, the fast bowler, and the batsman Wade Townsend. Both players appeared in the Twenty20 tournament last summer and have been picked in a 13-man squad to face the Warriors, who should include Ashley Noffke, their former team-mate.The Bulls are the defending champions after beating Victoria at the MCG in February and have 10 players from that game in this squad. McDermott and Townsend will also take part in the Futures League, the interstate youth tournament, from Tuesday when the QAS face the ACT.Queensland squad Chris Simpson (capt), Glen Batticciotto, Ryan Broad, Lee Carseldine, Chris Hartley (wk), James Hopes, Ben Laughlin, Alister McDermott, Craig Philipson, Nathan Reardon, Nathan Rimmington, Chris Swan, Wade Townsend.

Celtic set to hand Bain a new contract

Celtic are set to offer Scott Bain a new deal at Parkhead.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Scottish Daily Express, who claim that, after handing both Anthony Ralston and Greg Taylor contract extensions earlier this month, the 30-year-old goalkeeper is next in line for a new deal.

The report goes on to state that Ange Postecoglou has been impressed with the Scotland international since he took over at Celtic this summer, despite Joe Hart being the Bhoys’ undisputed number one so far this season.

Bain’s current contract still has around a year and a half to run, expiring in the summer of 2023, however, a new deal looks set to tie the goalkeeper down at Parkhead on a long-term basis.

Big blunder

While it is true that Bain has impressed in spells since making the move to Celtic back in 2018, handing the 30-year-old a new deal while he still has the best part of a season and a half left to run on his current contract would appear to be a rather strange move by Postecoglou.

Indeed, the £720k-rated man particularly impressed over his 20 Scottish Premiership appearances back in 2018/19, keeping a whopping 15 clean sheets on the way to the Hoops lifting the league title – with Neil Lennon dubbing the ‘keeper “outstanding” at the end of the season.

However, since that campaign, Bain has made just 34 first-team appearances in all competitions, with Lennon spending £4.5m on Vasilis Barkas back in the summer of 2020, with the intention of the Greek international becoming the Bhoys’ number one, while Postecoglou himself splashed £1.08m on Joe Hart this summer – with the 34-year-old making the spot between the sticks his own so far this season.

Furthermore, Celtic currently boast a number of exceptionally talented young goalkeepers in their academy, with the likes of 18-year-old Tobi Oluwayemi and 23-year-old Conor Hazard not looking to be far away from regular first-team football.

As such, the decision to hand the £7.6k-per-week Bain a new deal would not only appear to be an odd move by Postecoglou, it could well be a big blunder by the 56-year-old manager, as a situation in which the shot-stopper puts pen to paper on a new long-term contract and is subsequently forced out of the first-team by one of the club’s youth prospects in the next few seasons would not appear an unlikely outcome whatsoever.

In other news: Ange can finally axe Celtic’s £16k-p/w “problem” by signing “fantastic” 24 y/o monster

Shahzad century leads Afghanistan to victory

Mohammad Shahzad struck his maiden one-day international century to lead Afghanistan to a six-wicket victory against the Netherlands in Amstelveen

Scorecard
Mohammad Shahzad struck his maiden one-day international century to lead Afghanistan to a six-wicket victory against the Netherlands in Amstelveen and level the two-match series at 1-1. Chasing 231, Shahzad ensured that Afghanistan kept pace with the asking-rate and his innings of 110 off 112 balls eventually helped them reach the target with 20 balls to spare. The Afghanistan chase got off to a slow start – they scored 5 in the first three overs – before Noor Ali gave it some energy. He drove Mudassar Bukhari down the ground and pulled Edgar Schiferli to the midwicket boundary but his acceleration was cut short when he was trapped lbw by Bukhari for 15. Thereafter, Shahzad took over.Shahzad consistently picked out gaps in the field but was unafraid to take his chances too, driving Schiferli past mid-on before lofting him for a second boundary in the ninth over. He did not allow the bowlers to build pressure by playing very few dot balls, ensuring there was constant rotation of the strike. He reached his 50 off only 57 balls and entered the nineties by slogging Ryan ten Doeschate to the boundary. Another flick past short fine leg off ten Doeschate took Shahzad closer to his hundred and he reached the landmark with a drive down the ground. As he celebrated a wonderful innings, the small crowd gave him a rousing cheer. They were chanting his name after his century but Shahzad began to cramp – for the second time – and play was halted until Ali came out as a runner. Afghanistan needed 35 off 43 balls at this stage and Samiullah Shenwari, who was batting on 23, carted ten Doeschate over long-off to ease the pressure.Shahzad did not see Afghanistan to victory, though, for he was caught after slashing Bukhari towards third man. He had left the rest of the batsmen with only 14 to get off 30 balls, a task which Shenwari and Mohammad Nabi completed in the 47th over.Shahzad’s innings overshadowed fine performances from Eric Szwarczynski and ten Doeschate, whose contributions helped revive the Netherlands innings. Both openers had perished after scoring 3 each – Alexei Kervezee inside-edging Hasti Gul on to his stumps, while Bukhari skied a catch to mid-on. Tom de Grooth was pinned on the crease soon after, leaving the hosts precariously placed on 31 for 3.Szwarczynski scored steadily, making 65 off 84 balls, and added 113 run for the fourth wicket with ten Doeschate before he was lbw to Nowroz Mangal. Netherlands were jolted further when Mangal dismissed Bas Zuiderant for a duck and dismissed Daan van Bunge shortly afterwards to reduce Netherlands to 172 for 6. ten Doeschate, however, was firm at one end and was unlucky to miss out on his century. He remained unbeaten on 98 after having steered his side to a competitive total. Shahzad, though, ensured it wasn’t competitive enough.

São Paulo muda entrevista de Dorival para sair de polêmicas e destacar melhora do time

MatériaMais Notícias

O técnico Dorival Júnior quebrou o protocolo e deu entrevista coletiva nesta terça-feira no São Paulo.

Bielsa handed major Leeds injury boost

Leeds United have been handed a timely injury boost ahead of their return to Premier League action this weekend…

What’s the latest?

According to Football Insider, left-back Junior Firpo has been given the all-clear to feature against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, handing Marcelo Bielsa a huge boost.

It’s thought that the 25-year-old, who signed for £12.8m from Barcelona in the summer, has fully recovered from muscle injury picked up on the training pitch and is now in contention to start in north London.

He has not featured for the senior side since early October – a 1-0 win over Watford – and has missed their last four league outings, as a result.

Major boost

This will be a major source of encouragement for the Argentine head coach, not least because he’s a huge admirer of the Brazilian.

“When Junior manages to have the rhythm the Premier League imposes on you, he’s going to be a full-back that shines a lot,” he told reporters at the end of September (via LeedsLive). “He has all the physical and technical resources to generate moments of very good football.”

Leeds were already light on options in the left-back role and in his absence, a host of players have had to deputies, the latest of which being towering central defensive colossus Pascal Struijk.

The 6 foot 3 Dutchman was deployed out wide against Leicester City as Stuart Dallas had to cover for Jamie Shackleton, who was also injured, on the other wing.

And even then, the 22-year-old academy graduate is filling in for vice-captain Luke Ayling, who has been on the treatment table since mid-September.

As you can see, Bielsa has had to deal with numerous injury problems, so he will certainly be delighted by the return of Firpo this weekend, even more so as Antonio Conte’s system utilises the wide areas to great effect.

The Yorkshiremen will appear a lot stronger in these positions with a natural full-back available.

Firpo’s return is certainly a major boost and Bielsa will be buzzing to have him back.

AND in other news, Leeds could have their own Virgil Van Dijk in teenage “leader”…

Panel advises end to foreign players and neutral venues

The BCCI’s technical committee has recommended foreign players should not be allowed to play in domestic cricket from the 2009-10 season

The BCCI’s technical committee has expressed concern over the quality of SG balls•AFP

The BCCI’s technical committee has recommended foreign players should not be allowed to play in domestic cricket from the 2009-10 season and the number of ‘guest players’ (those from areas outside their jurisdiction) be reduced to the original three. In the recent past England’s Vikram Solanki and Kabir Ali and Bangladesh’s Enamul Haque Jr played in the Indian domestic cricket. The committee has also recommended that Ranji knockout games be played on a home-and-away basis instead of neutral venues that were used for the last two seasons. “The venue would be decided based on the previous clash in knockout games between the two teams,” N Srinivasan, the honorary secretary of BCCI, said.It also suggested the BCCI ensure its contracted players turn out for their state sides when not playing for India. Last season Rahul Dravid (Karnataka) played three first-class games, Sachin Tendulkar (Mumbai) played two, while VVS Laxman (Hyderabad), Ishant Sharma, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir (Delhi ) played one each. The panel suggested that the Powerplay and ball-change rules in place for ODIs should be applicable for domestic limited-overs matches as well and expressed concern over the quality of SG balls used in domestic matches. In January this year the BCCI asked the ball manufacturing company for a clarification regarding the quality of balls supplied during the Ranji Trophy. It has been a trend, and a major concern, throughout the domestic competitions that the ball loses shape regularly, and has to be changed often – sometimes as many as four to five times during the first session of a matchIt approved the format for assessment of pitches for domestic tournaments and suggested the installation of a special committee – comprising Sunil Gavaskar, Kris Srikkanth and Chetan Chauhan – to go through pitch reports of the domestic match referees. The technical committee’s recommendations will be taken up for consideration by the board’s working committee when it meets in August 2009.

South Africa Emerging Players maintain perfect record

A round-up of the matches on day four of the Emerging Players Tournament

Cricinfo staff24-Jul-2009
Scorecard
South Africa Emerging Players continued their unbeaten run in the tournament, clinching a high-scoring thriller at the Albury Oval against the Australian Institute of Sports (AIS). Farhaan Behardien, who hit a sparkling century, seemed to have taken South Africa through to a memorable win, but he fell in the penultimate over, with still four to get. It was the last-wicket pair of Thandi Tshabalala and Lonwabo Tsotsobe who held their nerve as they overhauled the target with two balls to spare.AIS were given the perfect start by Rob Quiney at the top, after being put in. His quickfire 71 off 63 balls was just the platform the hosts needed as captain Steven Smith and Tom Cooper joined in the act. It was Craig Alexander and Juan Theron who managed to put the brakes on the scoring for some time, with each picking up three wickets. But Jon Holland’s late cameo of 33 ensured AIS went past the 300-mark.It was a steady start from the South Africans during the chase, but apart from Dean Elgar none of the top five could convert their starts to big scores. Enter Behardien. Almost single-handedly he turned the tide South Africa’s way, blasting 105 off just 60 balls. His innings was studded with 11 fours and four sixes as he put on 82 for the fifth wicket with Elgar. Another 50-plus partnership with CJD de Villiers followed as South Africa closed in on victory. But there was more drama to follow.
Scorecard
India Emerging Players brushed off the disappointment of consecutive losses by thrashing New Zealand by seven wickets at the WEP Harris Oval. India made regular inroads after fielding first and were led by Pradeen Sangwan, the left-arm seamer, who picked up five wickets as New Zealand were restricted to 9 for 228. Peter Fulton’s crucial century from No. 3 was put in the shade by an unbeaten 115 from Virat Kohli and India knocked off their target in the 42nd over.Fulton, the New Zealand captain, led the resistance with 122 from 143 balls and Kane Williamson (40 from 60) made a start after Sangwan nipped out the openers. But then Abhishek Nayar struck twice with his slow medium-pacers to hurt New Zealand’s middler order before Sangwan took out three more to finish with 5 for 40.India themselves lost two quick wickets but Kohli and the opener Ajinkya Rahane forged a match-winning partnership that flummoxed New Zealand. Rahane missed a century by just five runs, stumped off Nick Beard at victory’s doorstep, and Kohli remained not out to seal a crushing victory.

Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, has revealed that there have been three offers to play England in one-off Twenty20 matches worth US$20million after the collapse of the Allen Stanford deal.”I was staggered [by the offers],” Clarke told the . “But we’ve got a very crowded calendar and we need to look at those types of proposals – there are serious issues about whether we should be playing individual games for very large sums of money.”There’s a strong debate about it so I don’t think it’s something the board would view with much favour.”England played a Stanford All Stars XI in Antigua on November 1 for a winner-takes-all purse and were crushed by 10 wickets as Chris Gayle’s team went away with the money. The week was marred by a poor attitude from the England team and strong criticism of the event. Then, in February, while England were touring West Indies for the Test series it was revealed that Stanford was being investigated for suspected fraud and all his assets were frozen. The ECB severed all ties with Stanford, which included plans for a quadrangular event at Lord’s this summer. The ECB were strongly criticised in some quarters for their association with Stanford. The US$20million match was launched by him landing a helicopter on the Nursery Ground at Lord’s.
