Arthur: 'The game is on a knife-edge'

Andrew Miller presents the plays of the third day of the third Test at Edgbaston

South Africa’s coach, Mickey Arthur, admitted he was “very, very disappointed” with his team’s performance, on a day when their hopes of sealing an unassailable 2-0 series win, and with it their first triumph in England since 1965, were dented by Paul Collingwood’s gritty hundred and a typically flamboyant and momentum-seizing 94 from Kevin Pietersen.By the close of the third day, England had overturned a first-innings deficit of 83, and were handily placed on 297 for 6 – a lead of 214 and with Collingwood still unbeaten on 101. Despite at one stage reducing England to 104 for 4, South Africa’s seamers let the ascendancy slip away in a performance that Arthur said was “simply not good enough”.”The game is on a knife-edge,” said Arthur. “We had an opportunity today which we didn’t take, which was disappointing. We’ve asked for patience, pressure, we asked for bowling in partnerships, and to bat in partnerships. We asked the guys to forget about outcomes, and unfortunately we forgot about everything we spoke about.”Despite their ten-wicket victory at Headingley, and the dominance they had enjoyed on the first two days of this match, South Africa are keenly aware of their record in England since their readmission to Test cricket. They’ve led in each of three series since 1994, and emerged with two draws and a loss in 1998.”This is a team that’s very desperate to win the series,” said Arthur. “There’s a lot of hunger, which is not a bad thing. It’s a good thing. But the disappointment was tangible in the dressing room.”As Pietersen and Collingwood embarked on their momentum-changing stand, South Africa were devoid of a response with the ball – in particular their principal strike bowler, Morne Morkel, who was clubbed for 75 runs in 15 overs. He did, however, claim the wicket of Andrew Strauss, which was his 100th in first-class cricket – a tally that highlighted just how inexperienced he really is. “Morne’s talent outweighs what we got today,” said Arthur.Arthur did, however, accept that Collingwood’s innings, in the circumstances, was a remarkably composed performance. “He played fantastically well today,” said Arthur. “He’d almost been written off, but he came out today and played unbelievably well, under a lot of pressure. Hats off to Colly, he played fantastically.”As for his own players, Arthur didn’t try to pretend they had had anything other than a chastising day in the field. “The guys’ heads did drop slightly,” he said, “but there was a lot of emotional energy shown today, and not a huge amount of intelligent energy. We ran on emotion, and what we saw there were guys who were completely knackered mentally and physically, because they had an emotional drain today.”Even so, South Africa do have one silver lining as they pick up the pieces of their most disappointing day since the start of the series at Lord’s – the second new ball is due in the very first over of the day, a prospect which Arthur described as a “gift”. “We had a chat in the dressing room,” he said, “and if it works, we will be set 250-60-70, and we believe we can get that. It is very evenly balanced tonight.”

Liverpool battling Villa for Danjuma

An update has emerged on Aston Villa target Arnaut Danjuma, regarding Liverpool’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to Marca, via the Daily Star, Liverpool are keen on signing Bournemouth winger Arnaut Danjuma before the end of the transfer window.

Aston Villa reportedly enquired about a potential swoop for the attacker earlier this summer, but will now have to beat the Reds in order to bring him to Villa Park.

Watkins 2.0

Dean Smith could land another Ollie Watkins type signing by bringing Danjuma to the club this summer. The ex-Brentford coach has had huge success in bringing talent from the second tier to the Premier League, with Watkins arriving in the Midlands last summer and enjoying a terrific season in the top-flight.

In 37 Premier League starts, the forward provided Villa with 14 goals and five assists whilst averaging a superb WhoScored rating of 7.18. This came after he scored 26 and assisted three in 49 Championship starts (including play-offs) for Brentford the previous year. Smith was able to bring him in and help him flourish at a higher level, which is exactly what he could with Danjuma.

The Bournemouth attacker racked up 17 goals and seven assists in 31 starts in the Championship, averaging a WhoScored rating of 7.21. This means that he came up with a goal contribution every 1.3 starts for the Cherries, compared to Watkins’ goal contribution every 1.7 starts for Brentford.

Clinton Morrison lauded the excellent Dutchman last year when speaking about him on Quest, via Football League World:

“Danjuma is an excellent player. Whatever happens, he will be playing Premier League football next year, whether it’s with Bournemouth or without them. He’s an exceptional talent.”

These comments from Morrison and the aforementioned statistics between Watkins and Danjuma suggest that he could be the next star out of the EFL. He has proven that he has the quality to stand out in the Championship and Smith has already shown that he has the coaching ability to help players like that make the step up to the Premier League, Watkins being the case-in-point.

This is why Villa fans would love to see Danjuma join the club. Supporters love to see goals and the Dutchman’s statistics for Bournemouth suggest that he could be able to provide them for the Villans in the top-flight.

It is now down to Johan Lange to strike a deal with the south coast club and then Smith would need to work with him on the training pitch to turn him into Watkins 2.0.

Waqar given nod for Zimbabwe Tests, ODIs

Waqar Younis will continue to captain Pakistan in both Tests and One-day Internationals, ending speculation at least for the time being, of a separate skipper for one segment of the game

Khalid H. Khan26-Oct-2002Waqar Younis will continue to captain Pakistan in both Tests and One-day Internationals, ending speculation at least for the time being, of a separate skipper for one segment of the game.A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesman told Dawn Friday from Lahore that Waqar has been retained captain for Zimbabwe, the first leg of the twin tour of the African continent.”Waqar Younis will lead both Test as well as One-day International sides during the Zimbabwe tour.”Chairman of selectors, Wasim Bari, will announce the squads Saturday during a press conference at 1.00pm at Gaddafi Stadium,” the spokesman said. When asked what will be the composition of the two squads to be named, the PCB spokesman informed that 15 players will be picked for the two-match Test series and 16 will form the contingent for five One-day Internationals.PCB spokesman added the selectors may name a new vice-captain to replace Younis Khan, who was deputy to Waqar in the just concluded offshore home series against Australia.Pakistan’s tour of Zimbabwe, which starts when the squad leaves for Harare next Friday, features Tests at Harare (Nov 9-13) and Bulawayo (Nov 16-20) and one-dayers at Bulawayo (Nov 23 and 24) and Harare (Nov 27, 30 and Dec 1).Pakistan will then hop over to South Africa on Dec 2 for another series of five One-day Internationals and two further Tests, slated for Durban (Dec 26-30) and Cape Town (Jan 2-6).While on the second leg of their tour, Pakistan will name their final party of 15 for the World Cup in South Africa, starting from Feb 8. Therefore, the next eight weeks will also serve as a launching pad for next year’s mega event but with Pakistan cricket in complete disarray at the moment and with morale and confidence at its lowest ebb, it will require a lot of spadework to build a squad good enough to compete against the world’s best in the toughest World Cup pool.At the moment, the rubber-stamp selection committee of Bari and his members, Shafiq Ahmed and Abdul Raqeeb, are confronted with some difficult decisions in the aftermath of what happened in Colombo and Sharjah in recent weeks. The availability of senior professionals like Wasim Akram, Saeed Anwar and Yousuf Youhana offers the wealth of experience that was sorely missing in the Australian Tests.Lt Gen Tauqir Zia, who has vowed to take all matters into his hands, is the one who’ll be calling the final shots before the squads are read out in public Saturday afternoon.Even the PCB chairman will agree that Pakistan’s major worry is the brittleness at the top of the order. Since August 2001, when Pakistan played Bangladesh in the Asian Test Championship opener in Multan, no less than seven different opening combinations have been tried in 10 Tests. The opening stand in 16 innings of these Tests averages 31 runs per wicket. And only two partnerships were worth 100 or more. Saeed Anwar and debutant Taufiq Umar added 168 against the Bangladeshis in Multan.Taufiq then combined with the recalled Shadab Kabir to put on exactly 100 against the same opponents at Dhaka in January.Since then, the remaining 14 opening stands on average have yielded just 16 runs per wicket. The figures include the 91-run alliance between Taufiq and the unreliable Imran Nazir in the second innings of the Colombo Test when Australian fielders were over generous and dropped a number of sitters.Barring the Test against New Zealand at Lahore last May, Taufiq has figured in all remaining Tests while the tried and generally found wanting individuals like Shahid Afridi, Imran Nazir, Imran Farhat and Naved Latif were exposed to the new ball.Shadab was unceremoniously given the chop after the Bangladesh tour when he was hard done by a harsh umpiring verdict in the Chittagong Test.Had the selectors given the left-hander an extended run, who knows Shadab, a technically sound player, might have gone from strength to strength.Shadab, who turns 25 next month, since then had a successful Patron’s Trophy last season for Pakistan Customs, chalking up 679 runs in nine matches in the most competitive domestic first-class tournament with two centuries. He was even more prolific in the national one-day event, making 342 runs in eight matches while averaging 68.40.Picking a cricket team in this country is arguably the most difficult job, especially in bad times. Shadab’s becoming a whimsical selection victim is just an example how things operate in the PCB. Therefore, one can only guess the likely squads for Zimbabwe tour.Test squad: Waqar Younis (captain), Taufiq Umar, Saeed Anwar, Younis Khan, Yousuf Youhana, Faisal Iqbal, Hasan Raza, Rashid Latif, Saqlain Mushtaq, Shoaib Akhtar, Danish Kaneria, Mohammad Zahid, Mohammad Sami, Imran Farhat and Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan.One-day squad: Waqar Younis (captain), Shahid Afridi, Saeed Anwar, Younis Khan, Yousuf Youhana, Misbah-ul-Haq, Imran Farhat, Shoaib Malik, Rashid Latif, Moin Khan, Saqlain Mushtaq, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Abdur Rauf, Mohammad Sami/Mohammad Zahid, Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan.

Ponting's genius ignores numbers game

Years ago it seemed unbelievable that Ricky Ponting didn’t know how highly history rated some of his deeds

Records seem easiest for the people who are the least concerned about them as thoughts of milestones don’t sit annoyingly and teasingly in their minds. Years ago it seemed unbelievable that Ricky Ponting didn’t know how highly history rated some of his deeds.Whenever he walked in after play to discuss his latest hundred and was told of the great name he had just passed for runs or centuries, he’d look straight back and say: “I’ve never been one for stats.” Usually he didn’t know about the mark until one of the support staff had told him. It happened so often it had to be true. A man who has been ribbed by his team-mates for reading the Sydney grade cricket scores never knew when he was about to pass Waugh, Gavaskar or Bradman. At the start of his career Steve Waugh was playing under the coach Bob Simpson, who would alert the players to any new milestones they had achieved. Under Waugh’s captaincy history became a strong influence, pushing the team to smash records instead of breaking them. During the reign Australia achieved 16 wins in a row, Matthew Hayden raised a then-best 380 and Waugh finished his career in second on the list of Test run-makers with 10,927.The sense of numerical occasion didn’t pass to Ponting. Calculations don’t bother him as much as winning or spending a long time in the game. And in cricket there is always someone who is better – or more compulsive – with statistics. So the only reason Ponting knew he needed 61 runs in Antigua to reach what was once the fairytale of batting achievements was because one of the extended squad members had mentioned it.When Ponting started his Test career only Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar had reached five figures and 10,000 carried a magical quality. It was such a big deal to Border that in the same year he got there, with a single to mid-on off Carl Hooper at the SCG, he released his Beyond Ten Thousand autobiography.Batsmen didn’t get that far by mistake or by merely being good. Longevity was essential – Border and Gavaskar both played for 16 years – but so was regular, heavy run-scoring. Averaging more than 50 was a must. Ponting has done both in becoming the seventh player to the number. He began with 96 on debut in Perth in 1995 and it took 13 years and another 117 matches to join the group. A two to cover from Ramnaresh Sarwan’s occasional legspin lifted him out of the 9000s, but there was little fanfare. While Ponting said at stumps it was a nice milestone, he is happy letting everybody else make the fuss.Ponting is more proud of the many years he has spent in the national side, but in the quiet of his room the size of numbers must make him smile. In his public world, and in a team sense, Simon Katich’s unbeaten 113 was more important than the captain’s 65 on the opening day. Without Matthew Hayden, Australia needed a solid contribution and Katich provided it, allowing Ponting to leave for the hotel pleased with the side’s position.Despite Katich working impressively on his first century since 2005, his innings will be overlooked by those outside the squad. Ponting, the newest 10,000 man, is now standing at an altitude reached only by the super elite.
