Chris Silverwood to fly home early after family bereavement

Coach set to return to England on November 30, after the close of second day at Hamilton

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Nov-2019England’s head coach, Chris Silverwood, will fly home early from the Test tour of New Zealand after the sudden death of his father-in-law.Silverwood is set to return to England on November 30, after the close of the second day’s play of the second Test in Hamilton. The team’s assistant coaches, Graham Thorpe and Paul Collingwood, will assume responsibility of team affairs alongside Joe Root, the Test captain, for the remainder of the match, ahead of the team’s flight home on December 4.The news is a further blow to the morale of an England squad that suffered an emphatic innings-and-65-run defeat in last week’s first Test at Mount Maunganui. That Test was Silverwood’s first as England head coach, and proved to be an uncomfortable introduction to the realities of his new role, as the team’s batting frailties were exposed in both innings, and their lack of penetration with the Kookaburra ball was exploited in New Zealand’s record-breaking innings of 615 for 9 dec.Even before this latest news, it had been a difficult few days for the new coach, with the squad also dealing with the aftermath of a racial slur directed at Jofra Archer towards the end of the first Test. There have also been renewed questions about Silverwood’s partnership with his captain, Joe Root, following scores of 2 and 11 and another uninspired display in the field. His sad early departure means he will have little chance to address the issue prior to the tour of South Africa next month.”Family always comes first, no matter where you are in the world or what the situation a team finds itself in,” Ben Stokes told the BBC. “He asked my opinion personally and I just said ‘from my point of view, you need to get yourself back home because at the end of the day, family is the most important thing’.”

“Impossible” – Phil Hay comment reveals act of genius from Leeds and Farke

For Championship promotion-chasers Leeds United, the emergence of Archie Gray has without doubt been one of the stories of the season. Gray has started 30 out of 34 games under Daniel Farke in the league this season, including Friday's memorable comeback win over the leaders.

Only three Leeds players – Ethan Ampadu (3,060), Islan Meslier (2,843) and Georginio Rutter (2,788) – have played more second-tier minutes for the club than Gray's 2,707, and unsurprisingly, he leads the way for all teenagers in the division. His nearest challenger is Sunderland's Jobe Bellingham, and he's a considerable way back on 2,471.

Archie Gray for Leeds United.

While Gray broke through as a midfielder, he's mostly played as a right-back this season, lining up there 22 times in all competitions, including in the dramatic win against Leicester on Friday. Leeds had interestingly signed a potential competitor on the final day of the winter transfer window in the form of Burnley's Connor Roberts, who arrived on loan until the end of the season, and the Welshman announced himself in the best way possible against the Foxes, scoring off the bench after replacing Junior Firpo.

Now, some comments from Hay in the build-up to the match have emerged, and it looks like the 49ers ownership group – together with the manager – got their January decision making just about spot on.

Roberts forcing Gray to get "even better" – Hay

Speaking on The Square Ball Podcast before Friday's mania, The Athletic's Phil Hay said that people at the club were conscious of ensuring that Gray's development wasn't obstructed by any January addition. Signing a versatile veteran who can support the teenager rather than compete with him was the objective, and based on what happened on Friday night, they pulled it off to perfection.

“It was one of those things when they were looking for a right-back in January, I remember somebody at the club saying this, they were very conscious of wanting a good right-back, and they got Connor Roberts who is very good, but not wanting that to immediately compromise Gray’s minutes, they still wanted Gray to be in the team and him to be playing.

“Actually if anything, he’s got better since Roberts came in and made it impossible for Farke, it would have to be a fitness thing, to get Roberts into the team.”

Leeds 3-1 Leicester proves 49ers' transfer genius

Farke proved the owners' decision to target experienced support for Gray was an act of genius with what he did on Friday, bringing on the fresh legs of Roberts for Firpo, who was struggling, and shifting Gray over to the other flank.

The two combined to flip the game on its head, and Gray, who also provided an assist in the 4-0 win over Swansea City, has been phenomenal since Roberts arrived, showing precision in possession, knowing when to take risks and winning the vast majority of his individual battles.

In the end, it may be looked back on as the transfer that pushed Leeds on to become genuine challengers to what previously looked like a stroll to the title for the Foxes. With Roberts now fit and firing, the manager is free to use Gray exactly if, when and how he chooses, rather than being forced to run him into the ground week in week out at right-back only.

Chamari Atapattu replaces injured Sophie Devine at Loughborough Lightning

The franchise stated in a release of Sophie Devine’s unavailability without shedding light on the nature of her injury

Sri Lanka captain Chamari Atapattu will play for Loughborough Lightning at the 2019 Kia Super League (KSL). She replaces the injured New Zealand allrounder Sophie Devine, who was earlier retained by the side.Atapattu joins West Indies’ Hayley Matthews and South Africa’s Mignon du Preez as part of the overseas contingent. Atapattu, the 29-year-old batting allrounder, will be the fourth Asian representative at the KSL this season, alongside the Indian trio of Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma (both Western Storm) and Jemimah Rodrigues (Yorkshire Diamonds).Atapattu had been part of the Diamonds for the last two seasons, scoring 135 runs in five innings and 85 runs in seven innings in 2017 and 2018 respectively.”After the Women’s T20 Challenge, Hayley Matthews introduced me to Lightning captain Georgia Elwiss, who suggested I join the side,” Atapattu told ESPNcricinfo about how she got the contract with Lightning. “In the meantime, Yorkshire intimated they may be looking at signing a new set of overseas players.”Elwiss and I had discussions on Facebook Messenger and Lightning offered me a contract. But it was only for half the duration of the tournament, as a replacement for another overseas player who was due to leave midway for national duties. However, a fortnight ago, Loughborough got in touch and wanted me to come on board for the entire tournament given Sophie picked an injury.”Her initiation into the league came on the back of her sensational 178* against Australia – the third-highest individual score in women’s ODIs – at the 2017 World Cup.Atapattu is set to depart for the UK on July 28 and stay on till the final.”I want this edition to be the best in my KSL career so far,” she said. “I had a reasonably good debut season, where I was also the Player of the Match in one game. But my 2018 season was poor, partly because of being grounded by dengue two months prior to the start of KSL. I had to miss out on the Asia Cup (in Malaysia in June 2018) for the same reason. My preparations took a beating ahead of my departure to the UK, and it reflected in my performance.”For the past few weeks, I have been working on strength training especially, and playing mostly alongside boys, to ensure the pace I’m facing is quicker, the bounce steeper. Playing at the Women’s T20 Challenge was one thing – relatively slower wickets than England or Australia, where we’ll be playing our next big tournament – so I have been making specific adjustments to prepare myself as suitably as I can.”When asked about the Asian players at the KSL she has already played with, she said: “It’s a great endorsement for us players from subcontinental teams. There are several match-winners in Asian teams, I strongly believe. [What] we bring to the table is perhaps similar to what West Indians bring to the men’s franchise league – their skills, their culture, and their joviality. I think women’s players from the subcontinent are unique that way, as leagues like KSL and WBBL go. If we do well, I’d expect the number of Asian representatives to increase from five to eight in the next edition – whatever tournament replaces the KSL.”The upcoming edition of the six-team tournament begins on August 6, with all teams in action. Lightning will kick-start their campaign against last edition’s semi-finalists Western Storm, at the Haslegrave Cricket Ground.

>Classificação atualizada do Campeonato Catarinense

Aston Villa could jettison Duran with swoop for £10m "huge talent"

Aston Villa have already made one January signing, completing a deal to sign defender Kosta Nedeljkovic and it might not be the only player that arrives at the club this month.

Unai Emery has his eyes on a few other players, but could it be someone from the Championship who will be next through the Villa Park door during the January transfer window?

Aston Villa’s search for new signings

A few days ago, Villa failed with a second bid for Middlesbrough forward Morgan Rogers as Emery looks to add some depth to his attacking options.

They have submitted an improved offer for the Championship starlet and the Teesside club value him at around £10m as they face the prospect of losing one of their most prized assets before the end of the month.

Villa may have to offload a player or two before they make any more signings and one current first-team name that is being linked with a move is Jhon Duran.

West Ham United have had a loan move with an option to buy turned down by Emery, while Chelsea are still showing an interest in the striker.

Aston Villa could sign Ollie Watkins 2.0 after Fabrizio Romano reveal

Unai Emery is eyeing up a move for a new star to bolster Villa’s attack.

ByTom Lever Jan 21, 2024

With just ten days remaining of the current window, could Emery jettison Duran while bringing in the Boro forward? Only time will tell.

How Morgan Rogers compares to Jhon Duran

Duran has struggled for game time under the Spaniard this season, starting just seven times across all competitions and scoring four goals in the process which indicates that a fresh start could be the best thing to revive his career.

There is no doubting his talent, but with the form that Ollie Watkins is displaying this term – scoring 14 goals and registering ten assists – he won't be displacing him in the starting XI anytime soon.

Rogers, however, is more versatile than the Colombian striker, as he has been utilised as an attacking midfielder this season, along with playing some matches on either wing or as a centre-forward and this could appeal to Emery.

In 32 games, the 21-year-old has scored six goals and tallied up nine assists, showcasing how impressive he is in the final third and adding another player who can take the pressure off Watkins could be a wise move.

Hailed as a “huge talent” by his manager Michael Carrick, Rogers has impressed when compared to others in similar leagues to the Championship.

When compared to positional peers, the youngster currently ranks in the top 3% for shot-creating actions (4.27) and for successful take-ons (2.13) per 90, along with ranking in the top 7% for assists per 90 (0.25) and these statistics clearly show how wonderful he has been over the previous 12 months.

Although not the most prolific, Rogers brings other attributes to the table that can benefit Villa and combined with his positional versatility, Emery could give him the licence to shine in the Premier League.

£10m won't break the bank at Villa and if Rogers comes to the club and performs well, he could well generate them a stunning profit in the next few years.

‘Not built for that’ – Christian Pulisic position debate sparks Landon Donovan comparison as USMNT mull over how to bring the best out of AC Milan forward

Christian Pulisic has been likened to Landon Donovan in a best position debate, with the USMNT told he is “not built” for a central playmaking post.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The 25-year-old forward has enjoyed much of his success as a senior professional when operating on the flanks – with that role being filled for club and country. Pulisic has spent much of the 2023-24 campaign on the right at AC Milan, and has rewarded the faith of those at San Siro with a personal-best return of 13 goals.

  • WHAT LALAS SAID

Quizzed on how the United States can bring the best out of Pulisic as they look to build on a Nations League triumph at the 2024 Copa America, former USMNT star Alexi Lalas has told his podcast: “I think Christian Pulisic’s best position is out left – where he plays with the national team, where Gregg Berhalter plays him. I think he enjoys the ability to be on the, to use a hockey phrase, off wing and the ability to cut onto his preferred foot. But, also the ability to tuck his shoulder and go round on the left-hand side. And it’s not like he’s useless with his left foot. The inverted winger situation that has become so prevalent, and has existed for many years when it comes to hockey, is based on the fact you cut in and you are on your strong foot. We don’t associate Christian Pulisic necessarily with the bangers from the top of the box cutting in, I just see him feeling more comfortable on that left-hand side.”

  • Getty

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lalas added on the U.S. facing a similar dilemma with all-time great Donovan in the past, with there no need to force such talents into a position that does not suit them: “In a year where we are saying how well he [Pulisic] has played and how consistent it has been, it has not necessarily been in his best position. I don’t like him in the middle. I think it gets too cluttered up and I don’t think that is the best of Christian Pulisic. It’s not that he can’t do it, it’s not that he can’t have some success at times doing it, I just don’t think he is built for that. He is built for space. In the same way as Landon Donovan – obviously they utilise it differently – but the same way at times when Landon Donovan went in the middle, I did not like that. When there are a lot of players and there is a lot of confusion going on, I think they don’t have the ability to function at the best of their abilities when they are inside. We will see ultimately what happens. I don’t think he is going anywhere but that left-hand side when it comes to Christian Pulisic going forward with the national team – I think he has got that locked down. Not that there can’t be some experimentation at some point in the future, but if everybody is healthy and everybody is there, then it’s Christian Pulisic on the left-hand side and I think that gives us the best chance to see the best version of Christian Pulisic.”

  • WHAT NEXT FOR PULISIC?

Pulisic is a talismanic presence for the USMNT and is expected to lead by example – with the captain’s armband often being passed in his direction. He has previously stated that he feels most comfortable operating on the left, with the presence of Rafael Leao forcing him to switch wings at Milan.

Borna Barisic contract update: “Magic” Rangers ace in talks for new deal

A new contract could be heading the way of "magic" Rangers star Borna Barisic in the near future, according to a new update from journalist Dean Jones.

Rangers January transfer news

The Gers have done so well to battle to within touching distance of Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race, as Philippe Clement's positive start to life as manager at Ibrox continues. Rangers won 3-1 at home to Dundee on Saturday afternoon, while the Hoops' 2-1 loss at Kilmarnock the following day means Clement's side are now only five points adrift of top spot with a game in hand.

New signings in the January transfer window are surely needed to further increase their chances of going all the way in the league, however, and Nottingham Forest defender Scott McKenna has been linked with a move to Rangers. Everton's Ben Godfrey is another who has been seen as a potential Ibrox target, as it's clear the defence is an area of focus for the new boss.

There are also key players who Clement will have to fight to keep hold of however, and an important update has emerged regarding one such figure.

Barisic in line for new Rangers deal

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones said talks are underway between Rangers and Borna Barisic over a new deal at Ibrox.

Rangers defender Borna Barisic.

"Obviously, there is uncertainty around the left-back position at the moment. Barisic has been at the club for a long time now, and he has got a few clubs looking at his situation because he could sign a pre-contract with a club abroad in January.

"There have been a few mooted in that sense, so it is a situation to watch. But Rangers have begun the process of talking to him about an extension, and that began a couple of months back. You would be expecting that to progress pretty soon if there is going to be a good ending to it from a Rangers perspective.

"They need to try and make sure that the contract situation works out suitably, from their point of view, pretty soon because Rangers will need to be wondering what they will do by the time they get to the end of the season if they don't get good indications that he is going to sign a new deal."

Barisic signing a new deal at Rangers would be great news, with the 31-year-old such a steady performer for the club over the years, making 222 appearances in total and chipping in with 52 assists in that time.

Steven Gerrard hailed him as "magic" during his time as Gers manager, following a goal in a 1-0 win against St Mirren, and he is someone with so much experience but still with years left in him at this level.

Barisic has started ten Scottish Premiership games so far this season, averaging 1.9 clearances and 1.8 aerial duel wins per game, and with his current deal expiring next summer, an extension is a no-brainer
