Perfect for Richy: Spurs must bench Simons & unleash "frightening" talent

Tottenham Hotspur have made a strong start to the Thomas Frank era, and a win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday would consolidate the feel-good feeling down N17.

However, Bournemouth claimed themselves three points when visiting north London earlier this year, and Spurs failed to make their dominance count in a 2-2 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex last week, albeit pulling back from a two-goal deficit.

No such stumbles can be afforded in this one, though Wolves languish in the division’s bottom spot and without a point on the board.

And, moreover, the in-form Richarlison is up against one of his favourite opponents once again.

Richarlison could be key vs Wolves

Dominic Solanke has scarcely had a sniff throughout the opening weeks of the Premier League season, with his injury issues compounded by Richarlison’s resounding form.

The Brazilian, 28, was rumoured to be on the move after lifting the Europa League under Ange Postecoglou, but here he remains, and he’s repaying the faith, with three goals and one assist from four appearances in the top flight so far.

Pundit Alan Shearer has praised the one-time Everton striker for his “phenomenal” start to the campaign, having struggled for form and with injuries over the previous two years in white.

And it would hardly be a surprise to see him continue his purple patch against the Old Gold.

Supplementing Richarlison, Xavi Simons might be gunning for a starting berth on the left flank after a promising start to life in London, the 22-year-old playmaker joining from RB Leipzig for £51m in the summer.

However, Frank should unleash Brennan Johnson if he wants to ensure victory against a Wolves backline that is currently there for the taking.

Why Frank should unleash Brennan Johnson

It was Johnson, 24, who bundled in the winning goal as Tottenham defeated Manchester United to lift the Europa League, and after scoring in successive league matches to start the Premier League season, it looked like he might be taking his game to the next level.

However, he was hooked before the hour mark against the Cherries, having made some poor decisions and drifted through a painful defeat. The Welshman is yet to return to the starting line-up.

However, he scored 18 times across all competitions last year and has a natural instinct for goal to combine with his “frightening” pace, as noted by content creator HLTCO, who also described the versatile winger as a “nightmare to defend against”.

With Richarlison seemingly determined to star as Tottenham’s chief goal-getter this term, Johnson could add an impactful dimension by taking his place back on the left flank, ranked as he is among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for non-penalty goals scored per 90, as per FBref.

And that’s not to say that Simons cannot enter the fray and make an impression, perhaps operating from deep, pulling strings and opening up passing lanes for the goalscoring duo if the Lilywhites need to press for a late winner.

In any case, Tottenham have plenty of tools to secure all three points against struggling Wolves.

Faheem Ashraf five-for leads Gladiators' demolition job of Zalmi

Chasing a target of 179, Zalmi could only make 114

Danyal Rasool27-Apr-2025Quetta Gladiators continued their resurgence with a comfortable win over Peshawar Zalmi, with Faheem Ashraf’s five-wicket haul helping skittle Zalmi out for 114 and sealing a 64-run win.Gladiators started brightly after being sent in to bat, with Finn Allen taking charge in the first four overs, and Rilee Rossouw picking up after Allen was dismissed for a breezy 16-ball 31. Four boundaries in the final over of the powerplay off Ali Raza saw Gladiators surge to 67 in six overs, before a tidy eight-over spell of spin bowling saw Zalmi drag them back.Sufiyan Muqeem and Saim Ayub bowled four overs each and as Gladiators failed to dispatch them, the wickets fell, too. Ayub removed Rossouw in the tenth over before a slightly less fluent innings from Saud Shakeel also came to an end. Their eight overs allowed just 57 runs, and a pair of tight comeback overs from Raza and Alzarri Joseph dragged Gladiators back further. But as has happened so often this tournament, inaccuracy at the death let the bowling side down as Mark Chapman went after Raza’s final over, smashing three boundaries and plundering 17. Joseph and Luke Wood kept the Gladiators below 180, and Zalmi appeared to have shaded the first innings, sitting prettier than they had after the onslaught of the powerplay. But Gladiators needn’t have worried. When Ayub smashed Amir away for a first-ball four and Babar Azam slapped Faheem for a six and a four off the bowler’s first two deliveries, it was a false dawn. Faheem struck back, drawing extra bounce from the surface to surprise Ayub and coax a nick that Kusal Mendis clung to behind the stumps. Four balls later, Amir had Babar trapped plumb in front, and Zalmi’s resistance appeared to melt away as Gladiators surged.Mohammad Wasim was finding inswing, and also found Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s stumps with a lovely full-length ball nipping in to reduce Zalmi to 32 for 3. In disarray, they prioritised caution over run-scoring, and in the end achieved neither. When top-order slogger Mohammad Haris found Rossouw at long-on, the run rate had sunk to just over six. Two balls later, middle-order hitter Abdul Samad, too, fell to Faheem as the game hurtled towards a conclusion.Gladiators managed the game expertly, refusing to let power-hitters from the lower order build up any head of steam that would allow Zalmi to sniff their way back into the game. Mitchell Owen was good value for a cameo, but Khurram Shahzad took away the on-side as an option, and the Australian carved him straight to deep cover-point. The following delivery, Joseph nicked off to Mendis, and Gladiators were into the tail.Hussain Talat continued to fight a valiant hand despite the outcome of the game long having been settled, before his 34-ball 39 came to an end when Abrar Ahmed deceived him in flight. Fittingly, though, Faheem had the final say, polishing off the final wicket and picking up his first five-wicket haul in the PSL when Muqeem tamely scooped him to mid-on, sealing a win that had, in truth, been secure from the early stages of the chase.

Starc's 'out of the box' ways prove too good for Head

SRH captain Cummins said a collapse like the one against DC “happens” with the high-risk approach his side takes

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Mar-20255:41

Do SRH’s batters lack a plan B?

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are known to go hard with the bat. That’s why they are expected to be the first team to score 300 in the IPL. Their method of attacking from the get-go got them a win in their opening match of IPL 2025. But they have lost two in a row since, the latest being a seven-wicket loss against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Vishakhapatnam. But SRH captain Pat Cummins believes that with the approach they have, “it happens”.SRH lost four wickets inside the powerplay and yet did not stop attacking. They were 58 for 4 after six overs, 105 for 4 after ten, and were bowled out for 163. That they reached there was thanks in large part to Aniket Verma, who hit a 41-ball 74.”We just never really got going,” Cummins said after the match. “Aniket gave us a score, but we lost a few early wickets. I think not all of them are bad shots. It happens. Obviously, a run-out and a couple [of batters] were caught on the fence, so yes, it happens.Related

Starc vs Head: 47 balls, six dismissals

Explosive SRH fizzle out against Starc and Kuldeep

“I don’t think it’s big margins. On another day, you get going, you play one or two shots, and suddenly you’re into your innings. Not everything has gone our way in the last two games. Everything just about went our way in that first game. You review it, maybe there’s one or two options you could have done differently and the result looks a lot different.”One of the key battles ahead of the match was between Travis Head and Mitchell Starc, and DC captain Axar Patel’s move to give Starc a third over in the powerplay paid off.Mitchell Starc picked up his maiden T20 five-for•BCCI”The plan [generally] is that I will bowl two overs [of Starc] at the start and two at the death,” Axar said. “But the situation was such that he was in rhythm, he had already given us two wickets, they [SRH] had lost three wickets. So I was thinking that in this over, I know what the opponent is going to do – they were going to attack. If we get a wicket, we could close the game. That was the plan and it was successful.”Coming into this game, Starc had dismissed Head five times in 42 balls for 24 runs across formats. Head began in the right manner today, hitting Starc for back-to-back fours in the opening over. But in Starc’s third over, Head gloved a ramp shot to a back-of-good-length offcutter to wicketkeeper KL Rahul.”I’ve played for long enough that I think guys obviously know what I’m trying to do,” Starc, the Player of the Match for his 5 for 35, said. “You’ve got to try and think of different ways or outside-the-box ways to be effective in T20 cricket these days. Even as an older player, you’ve still got to try and find new balls or find different ways to try and get batters out. It was nice to play a little bit of a different role.”I’m not sure there’s too many egos in the bowlers these days in T20 cricket,” he said. “It’s just you hang on for dear life sometimes. As a bowler, you have to think outside the box a lot more now with how the scores are trending and try and do things that you wouldn’t normally do and try and find a little bit of a leeway against these batters. It was nice to contribute in that way today.”

Finch keen for BBL auction, Maxwell questions power surge

Former Australia captain Aaron Finch would like a full player auction to be brought into the BBL while Glenn Maxwell believes the power surge should be removed as it doesn’t replicate international playing conditions.Currently, overseas players are selected through the draft – with clubs now able to pre-sign one name before that event – while a trade window, that is currently open, has been introduced for the first time this season, but Finch has said the majority of domestic players should also be included in a process more aligned with how the IPL operates.Related

  • Higher honours, big pay day on the cards for Hurricanes hero

“I’d like to see an auction come in,” Finch told the Powerplay on ESPN’s . “Each team potentially has the ability to retain maybe four of their players and then you say everybody else in the country, you’re into an auction. I think that that would create a great spectacle.”We see it in the IPL, it’s brilliant, creates evenness across the board I think. What it does give you as well is it gives you what the players are worth. So at times, depending on what your team needs, you might have to overpay for someone. But if it’s an auction, that’s generally what the price of a player is.”Maxwell, though, was uncertain about the idea, raising concern about clubs losing an identity with established names. “You’ve still got to have a way to keep your homegrown players in your home state, [to] still have that relevance,” he said. The BBL continues to be challenged on retaining overseas players with a number leaving in early January for either the SA20 or ILT20.Meanwhile, when asked what he would change about the tournament, Maxwell argued that while he could see the appeal of the power surge – the two overs of fielding restrictions that can be taken by the batting side after the 10th over – he felt it skewed the skills that were required away from how the rest of T20 is played. It echoed the views of Stars team-mate Marcus Stoinis who made similar comments ahead of the BBL season.”I’d get rid of the power surge,” Maxwell said. “I think unless the power surge was introduced in international cricket, I think it’s sort of probably lost its relevance. As a player, I think it probably misrepresents middle-order batting.”When you get picked for your country, you don’t have that luxury of having those two overs in the back ten to boost your strike rate, boost your score. It’s lost on the art of middle order batting to be able to find your way through those last ten overs. I know it’s great for broadcasters. I know it’s great for fans. But until it’s made an international rule, I don’t think we should have it.”Finch acknowledged he had held a similar view when he was a player, but having now retired from the game saw the value the power surge brings.”I think that it provides entertainment right through an innings,” he said. “It keeps games alive. Like if a team needs 15 and over, with a power surge up your sleeve, there’s still half a chance.”

Chansiri set to decide on rising star's exit amid interest from Rangers

Glasgow Rangers are “among the admirers” to sign a highly-rated player this summer, according to an update from reliable journalist Alex Miller.

Rangers pushing for late-summer business

The Gers’ opening weekend 1-1 draw away to Motherwell was far from an ideal start to their Scottish Premiership season, with Russell Martin’s side immediately losing ground on rivals Celtic.

It is essential that more transfer business is done between now and the end of the window, in order for Martin to have a squad that is capable of both winning the title and holding its own in Europe, and players continue to be linked with moves to Ibrox.

Russell Martin applauds the Rangers fans.

One report has claimed that Rangers have joined the race to sign young Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Hein this summer, with a season-long loan move potentially on the cards. The 23-year-old is going to struggle for minutes at the Emirates in 2025/26, so a year in Scotland could be ideal for his development.

Elsewhere, the Gers are said to have held talks with Real Betis centre-back Nobel Mendy about a move to the club, and are happy to pay more than £1.7m for his signature. Now, a new update has dropped regarding another summer transfer target.

Rangers admire "excellent" Championship player; Chansiri to decide

According to Miller on X, Rangers are “among the admirers” in the battle to sign Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles, with the decision left up to controversial Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri.

“Any decision on whether Sheffield Wednesday cash-in on Pierce Charles will ultimately be made by Dejphon Chansiri, Henrik Pedersen has admitted. West Ham and Rangers among the admirers.”

Pierce Charles.

Charles has been linked with Rangers already this summer, with the 20-year-old’s future at Wednesday in doubt, amid their dire financial situation and doubts over whether Chansiri is genuinely working towards a sale.

It is easy to see why the Gers are eyeing him up as a top-quality young option between the sticks, with the stopper already an eight-cap Northern Ireland international, also racking up 15 appearances for the Owls. He has admirers everywhere, including his international manager, Michael O’Neill, who has lauded him in the recent past.

The lure of the Premier League is clear for any player, so West Ham will be a threat to Rangers’ chance of signing Charles this summer, but the Scottish giants can offer him European football, which the Hammers cannot.

Wednesday’s aforementioned financial situation also means they may be forced to sell one of the best young players, and he has the ability to mature into a key man for the Gers for years to come, should they strike a deal for him.

Gibbs-White will love him: Nottingham Forest set to finalise "top signing"

The Morgan Gibbs-White saga has officially concluded at Nottingham Forest, for now.

Indeed, Forest fans will all be breathing a collective sigh of relief as Gibbs-White has secured his short-term future at the City Ground at the very least, having penned a new three-year deal that runs until the summer of 2028.

That doesn’t mean a suitor won’t try their luck before that date, however, but it does at least mean Gibbs-White will be donning Forest red for the forthcoming Premier League campaign, over lining up in North London for Tottenham Hotspur.

Forest can now press on with other signings off the back of this distraction being put to bed, as a new attacker is eyed up to play alongside the much-talked-about 25-year-old.

Nottingham Forest on the verge of sealing new signing

Before this Gibbs-White situation kicked into gear, the Tricky Trees had been busy on the transfer front.

To date, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have welcomed two Brazilians to their camp this summer, with Igor Jesus sticking out as a promising buy up top from Botafogo.

Botafogo'sIgorJesuscelebrates scoring their second goal

Forest have now cast their net out to Serie A with a new report from Fabrizio Romano, indicating that Evangelos Marinakas is set to seal a new “top signing” to replace Anthony Elanga.

Indeed, the Italian transfer reporter has revealed that the Tricky Trees and Bologna have now reached a “verbal agreement” to sign Dan Ndoye for a fee of €40m (£35m) plus add-ons. The player is due to travel to England to have a medical on Tuesday.

Bologna'sDanNdoyekisses the trophy as he celebrates after winning the Coppa Italia

On Ndoye’s expected arrival in England, he could go on to make Gibbs-White even more of a frightening beast to contain in the forward areas.

How Ndoye can make Gibbs-White even better

£35m is a lot of money for the Tricky Trees to splash out on one player, considering Gibbs-White was once a club record buy when he joined for an initial £25m fee.

However, he does justify such a steep price tag when looking at his consistent heroics in the Serie A, with 24-year-old now ready to take the Premier League by storm under Nuno’s wing.

The in-demand number 11 – who can line up down either flank as a versatile presence – has a bumper haul of 11 goals and eight assists next to his name from 75 Bologna outings, which included a stylish finish finding the back of the net against Napoli last season.

Whichever flank he decides to call home at the City Ground, he will be looking to link up with Gibbs-White to devastating effect.

Indeed, the “complete” forward – as he’s been donned by his agent Lodovico Spinosi is similar in approach to his new potential English teammate. He offers plenty of energy and skill, alongside chipping in with goals and assists for fun.

Away from offering Forest a lively winger in the wake of Elanga departing, Ndoye could also make Gibbs-White even more of a dangerous presence in attack, as seen in the Swiss forward creating a high eight chances in total last season in Serie A, despite only averaging a mere 16.8 accurate passes per clash.

This ability to carve out an opening in a flash from Ndoye might well mean Gibbs-White becomes more clinical, knowing the 24-year-old has that split-second eye for an assist, with the ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder looking to reach the heights of his 21/22 season where he bagged ten strikes in total, away from hammering home seven goals last campaign.

Dan Ndoye for Bologna.

The lively Ndoye will also be prepared to scrap for his side – as seen by winning 5.9 duels per game in league action – meaning Gibbs-White might well be more focused on joining in with attacks, as opposed to being a fierce battler for Nuno’s men alongside the likes of Elliot Anderson.

£35m is a handsome amount of money to part ways with, but if it results in Gibbs-White becoming even better after he dramatically decided to stay put, it will have been viewed as a sensible investment to have made.

Newcastle now ready to hijack Sunderland move to sign £43m "leader"

In what would welcome the Tyne-Wear derby back to the Premier League in style, Newcastle United are now reportedly ready to hijack Sunderland’s move to sign a Serie A star this summer.

Newcastle return for Elanga

They may have faced their fair share of rejection so far this summer, but Newcastle are yet to be discouraged in their pursuit to sign an attacking reinforcement. Not giving up, the Magpies have returned with a second offer to sign Anthony Elanga after Nottingham Forest rejected their first bid worth around £45m.

With Bryan Mbeumo seemingly on his way to Manchester United, it’s clear to see why Newcastle have turned towards Elanga. The Swede had his best season yet last time out as Forest achieved an unthinkable European place. Now, however, he could leave the City Ground behind in favour of the Magpies.

The winger isn’t the only one on Newcastle’s shopping list, either. Those at St James’ Park now look set to complete a deal to sign James Trafford from Burnley, welcoming a long-term target in the process.

Newcastle eyeing move to sign 6'5 "freak" after completing scouting mission

The Magpies are still seeking reinforcements.

ByTom Cunningham Jul 3, 2025

The England international will compete with Nick Pope and may even displace the shot-stopper to become Eddie Howe’s No.1 as the ultimate modern-day goalkeeper.

Deals for both Elanga and Trafford would represent a change in fortunes for Newcastle following earlier rejection from the likes of Joao Pedro and Mbeumo. And that swing in momentum could yet see them jump ahead of rivals Sunderland to sign an ex-Arsenal midfielder in the coming months.

Newcastle ready to sign Matteo Guendouzi

As reported by Corierre della Sera and relayed by Sport Witness, Newcastle are now ready to sign Matteo Guendouzi ahead of interest from Sunderland and meet his €50m (£43m) release clause at Lazio.

The Frenchman hasn’t been seen in the Premier League since leaving Arsenal in 2022, but could now return three years later as a far more complete player courtesy of spells at Marseille and now at Lazio.

A player who Gary Neville once described as a “leader”, Guendouzi could push Joelinton all the way for a starting place at Newcastle and offer Howe the depth he has been craving in doing so.

As the Magpies step back into the Champions League next season, it’s the type of depth that Newcastle simply must add to their side this summer. It’s also depth that they failed to sign the last time they were in the Champions League, resulting in an early exit and a finish outside the Premier League’s top four.

Signing Guendouzi would go a long way towards solving that problem all whilst getting one over on Sunderland.

Newcastle negotiating to make £113k-p/w PSG ace their second summer signing

Newcastle United are preparing for a return to the Champions League stage under Eddie Howe and could now be set to lodge a bid to complete a bargain deal on Tyneside, according to reports.

Newcastle United prepare for a summer of change

The Magpies sit at an advantage to some of their Premier League rivals when it comes to their financial health. However, PSR regulations could be a frustrating factor in their ability to solicit business.

Speaking about their potential activity, finance expert Kieran Maguire understands why the Magpies may feel short-changed by the rules and the course of action they have taken since falling into play.

Newcastle United manager EddieHoweand assistant manager Jason Tindall celebrate

He explained: “City, Chelsea and PSG got in before those rules changed. We now have clubs like Newcastle, Villa and Nottingham Forest, who are ambitious and aspirational. They want to move to the next level. The owners are willing to fund that move to the next level, but the cost control measures prevent them from doing so.

“It’s a function of time. Some clubs were on the right side of the divide when the rules were introduced, but we have since seen clubs become very frustrated.”

Either way, Howe is keen on strengthening his forward line having already signed youngster Antonio Cordero, and Porto forward Samu Aghehowa may be on his way to Newcastle amid his £82.5 million release clause.

Central defender Evan Ndicka could also move to the North East from Roma if reports are to be believed in a swoop that would see a priority position strengthened for Howe.

Strength in depth is needed to adequately handle both domestic and European endeavours, so it won’t come as any surprise to hear that Newcastle are probing for another option that could add to their rearguard.

Newcastle open negotiations to sign Nordi Mukiele

Africa Foot claim Newcastle have opened negotiations to sign Nordi Mukiele from Paris Saint-Germain and have kicked things off with an offer in the region of £12.7 million for the France international.

The Champions League holders don’t see the 27-year-old as a major part of their future plans, which is reflected in the fact he spent the campaign on loan at Bayer Leverkusen and registered two goals and one assist in 24 matches.

Earning around £113,000 per week at his parent club, versatile defender Mukiele won 80% of his attempted tackles in the Bundesliga last term either in central defence or on the right-hand side of Xabi Alonso’s backline.

Now back at his parent club, he finds himself at a career crossroads amid Paris Saint-Germain’s excellent position in the world of football, but he will have plenty of interested suitors ready to offer him a new challenge, including Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, Besiktas, Everton, Aston Villa and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Newcastle are likely to be at the front of that queue due to their upward trajectory, meaning it is now over to Howe and company to push a deal through.
