Cork frustrated by Champions League absence

Dominic Cork has expressed his disappointment at not being able to take Hampshire to the Champions League in South Africa after leading them to the Friends Provident t20 title

Andrew McGlashan16-Aug-2010Dominic Cork has expressed his disappointment at not being able to take Hampshire to the Champions League in South Africa after leading them to the Friends Provident t20 title. They clinched the trophy by losing fewer wickets as scores finished level against Somerset but, unlike last year when Somerset and Sussex headed to India in October this season, there are no places for English counties due to a fixture clash. The Champions League runs from September 10-26 which coincides with the closing two weeks of the domestic season, including the conclusion of the County Championship and CB40, and also England’s one-day series against Pakistan. The ECB had brought the end of the season forward by a week under the belief the tournament would be held in late September but it was shifted so that India could play Australia. It left the ECB with no choice but to say to counties couldn’t take part because of the extensive changes that would have been required to the domestic fixtures. There is a certain irony, then, that Hampshire with their strong IPL links to Rajasthan Royals are one of the teams that would have qualified for the Champions League and Cork said it was a major loss for the club as well as English cricket.”It’s a disappointment for me as a player because I’d have loved to have gone but also for the guys who have performed so well, the younger players who would have benefited from playing against top international cricketers,” he told Cricinfo Switch Hit podcast. “It’s just a shame we won’t be able to go and I hope the ECB are looking at that to make sure counties are represented in the biggest competitions in the future.”We’ve seen how when the England players were first refused a chance to go to the IPL England’s Twenty20 campaign was disastrous and when they were allowed to go all of a sudden we win a World Cup in West Indies,” he added. “That’s no coincidence, that’s the fact that players are able to perform in the biggest competitions. Hopefully now the ECB can look at the Champions League, put all these rows to bed with India and sort it out because English cricket will suffer if we don’t have clubs represented.”It is hoped that from next year there will be a clear window after the English season which will allow counties to rejoin the tournament although there remains a feeling that the ECB have been left behind in the global development of Twenty20 despite inventing the format back in 2003. Discussions remain ongoing about the structure for domestic cricket from next season with serious movements being made towards a franchise-style structure based around the Test grounds.Cork believes the biggest change that needs to be made is a reduction in the number of matches after an explosion in fixtures meant 151 games in this year’s Friends Provident t20. But he thinks that county teams would be able to hold their own against IPL franchises.”The English Twenty20 is a very strong tournament,” he said. “It was too long with 16 qualifying games and the ECB need to look at that because we don’t want to reach overkill, but the fact we can attract some very good Twenty20 players, and the fact there are some good domestic players, means we can be very proud in having a strong competition. Hopefully we can keep it as strong as possible and I’m sure if we were able to play IPL teams all counties would put up a good performance.”

Jurgen Klopp's kids! Conor Bradley, Ben Doak and 15 Liverpool academy stars who can keep the Reds on top after manager leaves

As the Carabao Cup proved, the Reds are blessed with a great group of homegrown players that could sustain a new era of success at Anfield

Back in 2020, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp revealed that the club's dream was to have "a team full of Scousers". Four years on, the Reds still have plenty of work to do on that front – despite the continued success of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones' rise to prominence over the past year.

However, on the evidence of the Carabao Cup triumph at Wembley, it might not be long before Klopp – or his successor – picks a team full of academy products, with six homegrown heroes having featured in Sunday's stunning 1-0 win over Chelsea.

Caoimhin Kelleher, who was absolutely sensational in goal from start to finish, and Conor Bradley both started, while substitutes Jarell Quansah, James McConnell, Bobby Clark and Jayden Danns were all brilliant as Liverpool took control of the game in extra-time.

And the incredible thing is, more teenage talent is set to break through in the coming days, weeks and months. Indeed, as GOAL outlines below, Liverpool are blessed with a plethora of young players that could eventually become first-team regulars like predecessors Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones…

  • Getty

    Jarell Quansah

Liverpool made the bold call not to sign another centre-back during the summer but the gamble has paid off thanks to Quansah, who has been sensational since being thrown into the fold, particularly after the season-ending injury to Joel Matip. A wonderfully composed and versatile centre-half that can also play right-back, Quansah has gone from strength to strength since making his Reds debut in the most difficult of circumstances, after coming on as a sub in the backs-to-the-wall win at Newcastle in August. Just "a fantastic talent", as Virgil van Dijk put it.

    Stefan Bajcetic

Some people have forgotten about the midfielder as this season has been an absolute nightmare for Bajcetic, who has been restricted to just two appearances because of an adductor problem linked to a growth spurt. "He could train today fully and then maybe tomorrow as well, but then not [for] five weeks," Klopp explained at the turn of the year. "And that makes it so frustrating for the boy."

However, it's clear that as soon as the Spaniard returns to full fitness, he will have a big role to play as one of the few specialist No.6s at Anfield. Bajcetic, remember, was described as "Liverpool's best player" by Mohamed Salah when the teenager broke into the starting line-up during a difficult spell for Klopp's team last season.

  • Getty

    Conor Bradley

Competing with Quansah for the right to be regarded as the revelation of Liverpool's season so far. After a very productive and successful loan spell at Bolton Wanderers, the Northern Ireland international is now up to 12 appearances in all competitions, having done an incredible job filling in for the injured Alexander-Arnold.

"A wonderful kid, a really hard worker, and a good footballer," Klopp enthused after the win at Bournemouth. "He is a defender but he can attack as well." No arguments there: Bradley has already racked up five assists – and one goal – in a Red shirt, meaning Alexander-Arnold's move into midfield could happen sooner than we thought!

    Ben Doak

The teenage winger is presently sidelined with an injury that could well keep him out for the remainder of the season. However, Doak has already done enough since joining from Celtic in 2022 to show why he's considered one of the most exciting players to come out of Scotland in years.

Doak is an incredibly direct dribbler, always willing to take on his man, and was hugely impressive during Liverpool's pre-season programme. He has "obvious quality", as Klopp says, and could become a real crowd favourite at Anfield if he makes a full recovery from knee surgery.

Meet Lionel Messi's new team-mates: Facundo Farias and Inter Miami's latest raft of new signings

The club has swung big by bringing in a trio of ex-Barcelona stars, but the younger additions could be just as vital

It's been a summer of change at Inter Miami, to say the least. If you know even the slightest bit about sports in general, you'll know that Lionel Messi has arrived in MLS, bringing with him a level of attention never before seen in American soccer. Not even David Beckham captured the imagination quite like Messi, who, in only two games, has already put his stamp on his new team.

Messi, though, isn't the only addition to Miami's team this summer. He's the biggest, for sure, and certainly the most important but, with the club languishing in last place in the Eastern Conference, Inter Miami have brought in a series of new signings.

From familiar faces to rising stars, Miami has only just begun to fill out its roster, giving Messi plenty of different players to work with as he looks to dominate in MLS. But who are the club's summer signings and what position should we expect them to take on the field for Inter Miami? GOAL takes a look…

  • Getty

    Lionel Messi

We'll start with the main man himself: Messi. The Argentine needs no introduction, so we won't waste time listing out his many accolades. But, while there may not be a need to get into Messi's past, it is worth discussing both the present and the future.

In Miami, Gerardo 'Tata' Martino will no doubt look to use Messi in a variety of ways. He can either play on the right-hand side, much as he has for most of his career, or he could be deployed centrally as a No.10. No matter where he plays, he won't need to do much defending. No, for Messi, the mandate is clear: go out and get us goals.

It didn't take long to do just that, as he scored three and assisted two more in his first game-and-a-half in Inter Miami pink.

    Sergio Busquets

Another familiar face, Busquets, like Messi, already has an untouchable legacy. The ex-Barcelona star is among the best midfielders of his generation, having run the middle of the field for both club and country for over a decade. Few players in the history of the game have had a better pure understanding of the sport than Busquets, whose tactical knowledge and positioning is second to none.

That knowledge will buy him a few extra years as he inevitably slows down physically, although he'll certainly need some runners next to him in the midfield. He'll be deployed as a No.6 , either by himself or with another, as he looks to dictate the game from a deeper position.

The early results have been good, as Busquets' technical skill has been on full display as he's duelled with Atlanta United and Cruz Azul, taking advantage of the increased space and time compared to what he's seen in the highest levels of the game.

  • Getty Images

    Jordi Alba

Only one more Barcelona star, we promise. Alba, like his long-time team-mates, was among the best in his position for a long time, holding down that left-hand side at the Camp Nou for years. He's certainly slowed down a bit but, in a league that doesn't place much of an emphasis on big-money full-backs, he'll instantly be right there as the best in MLS.

The Spanish star will take up a spot on that left flank, with U.S. men's national team veteran DeAndre Yedlin on the opposite side of the defense. In front of Alba will likely be the next player on this list, a young future star who will look to benefit from all of the superstar talent around him…

    Facundo Farias

What a situation Farias is walking into. The 20-year-old Argentinian starlet will now be learning from the very best as he looks to take the next step on his own path to the top.

The winger was signed for a reported $5 million transfer fee with potential incentives, as Inter Miami secured the signing of one of the top young stars in Argentina. He scored 16 goals with nine assists during his time with Colon, having joined the first team in 2019. And he already has three goals in eight appearances in the Copa Libertadores, having proven he can play at the highest levels in South America.

Farias had previously been linked with both Boca Juniors and River Plate, having drawn comparisons with Carlos Tevez, but a knee injury in 2022 dashed any hopes of a move to one of the giants. Instead, he'll now play with the biggest giant of Argentine soccer in Messi, and he'll almost certainly occypy the left flank opposite the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner on the right.

Arsenal player ratings vs Chelsea: Martin Odegaard and Granit Xhaka brilliance gets Gunners back on track

After four games without a win, Mikel Arteta's side moved back to the top of the Premier League table with a crushing victory over the Blues

Arsenal blew Chelsea away with a rampant first-half performance as they claimed a 3-1 success at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday to end their four-game winless run and return to the top of the Premier League table.

Captain Martin Odegaard scored twice inside half an hour to get Mikel Arteta's side up and running before Gabriel Jesus made it 3-0 before the break.

Chelsea, who were a shambles in the first half, improved slightly after the interval and did pull a goal back through Noni Madueke, but it proved to be no more than a consolation.

MLS Week 7 Power Rankings: Sounders make statement to secure spot

Seattle's win against Toronto FC solidified the Sounders spot on LAFC's trail in Goal's MLS Power Rankings

The Seattle Sounders faced their first truly tough test of the 2019 MLS season and passed it with flying colors.

The Sounders knocked Toronto FC from the ranks of the unbeatens after Saturday's 3-2 victory at CenturyLink Field. Making the victory even more impressive was the fact it came without Peruvian striker Raul Ruidiaz, with Will Bruin stepping up to pick up the scoring slack with a pair of goals.

Seattle's victory kept the Sounders undefeated, and on the trail of Los Angeles FC, which maintained its dominating ways with a comfortable 2-0 victory against FC Cincinnati. The LA Galaxy made it four straight wins by topping the Philadelphia Union.

The Houston Dynamo continued their winning ways by beating the San Jose Earthquakes, keeping Wilmer Cabrera's side among the league's unbeatens.

Here are Goal's MLS power rankings after week seven action:

  • 1Portland Timbers (0-5-1)

Five straight losses have the Timbers in dead last in MLS, but the loss to FC Dallas felt a bit more encouraging. Of course, now the Timbers head to Colombus, where they'll face former coach Caleb Porter and the Crew in a rematch of the 2015 MLS Cup final, only with Porter now coaching the Crew.

  • 2Vancouver Whitecaps (0-4-2)

Marc Dos Santos is still searching for his first win in charge of the Whitecaps, but you can argue his team is showing signs of turning things around. Vancouver has been in every game this season, but consistency has eluded the Whitecaps. A visit to Los Angeles FC on Wednesday isn't exactly the ideal slump-buster, but Vancouver's schedule gets easier after that.

  • 3Colorado Rapids (0-5-2)

The Rapids continue to generate goals, but also bleed them, making Tim Howard's farewell tour a bit of a painful one. A road swing through Chicago and Atlanta could serve as Anthony Hudson's last stand, because if the Rapids find themselves winless heading into May, there'll be no real reason to keep him around.

  • 4New England Revolution (1-5-1)

The Revs are a mess, and they offered little in the way of real resistance against Atlanta United despite playing at home. They mustered just one shot on goal against the MLS Cup champions, and things aren't going to get any easier with the New York Red Bulls coming to town, even with New York's recent struggles.

Premier League kits 2022-23: ranking every home and away shirt from worst to best

The winners and losers of the replica shirt shakedown

It’s finally here. Seventy-five days after the Premier League drew to a close, the teams are back and ready to do it all again. While the league took a break – and the summer was rightly dominated by the Lionesses – those teams have been drip-feeding their kits for the upcoming season. Or at least most of them have. Due to supply chain issues, some teams have taken it right to the wire, while other clubs – we’re looking at you Chelsea and Leicester – still haven’t launched their away kits for the season.

As the Premier League begins its 30th year, we’ve pulled together this year’s league table based entirely on each club’s home and away kits.

We independently choose all products featured on our site. We may earn a commission when you purchase something through the links provided.Leicester FC / GOAL20Leicester

Home: 6/10

Leicester’s home shirt references some from its past – including a collar taken from the ‘70s and the “dynamic fox” aesthetic of the ‘80s – all of which contribute to a clean and classic kit. While  the stripped back “dynamic fox” design is a nod to the team of Gary Lineker and Alan Smith, it’s also slightly on the safe side.

Away: 0/10
That kit you see there is the Foxes third kit, and while we have no problem with it, it's crucially not the away kit. The club had delays for the home shirt and it seems something similar has happened with the away, as there isn't even a leak knocking about. We could have left a silhouette there, but that looked weird. Rock bottom for you, Leicester.

Home: 3/10
Southampton’s 2022-23 home shirt is inspired by one of its previous classics worn by Kevin Keegan, Alan Ball and others which has been inverted for the upcoming season. The issue is that it doesn’t work anywhere near as well. Most people would see Southampton as wearing mostly red – they even went all red as recently as 2013-14 – but this is very much a white kit with red details.

Away: 2/10
The wave pattern of Southampton’s away shirt is a reference to the sea, as well as the city’s docks and maritime location. It’s all just too much, though. The design is distracting and the gold detailing does nothing to help the overall finish.

Newcastle FC / GOAL18Newcastle

Home: 6/10

Newcastle’s last home shirt was bad – everyone knew it. This season features a huge improvement as the club goes back to basics. The black and white stripes are perfectly sized and distributed, and the simple trim around the sleeves and collar gives an added detail to a classic kit.

Away: 1/10

Honestly, the less said about it, the better.

Everton FC / GOAL17Everton

Home: 4/10
As shirts go, it’s pretty dull. It’s Everton’s classic blue and white, almost exactly as it always is. The few details – a measly two Hummel chevrons per arm and a heat-embossed tower pattern – do little to set this shirt apart from the competition. The “Stake” sponsor logo doesn’t do it any favours, either.

Away: 3/10
Everton’s bright pink away colours return for the first time since 2019-20, and once again it’s a missed opportunity for the Toffees. The shirt’s stand-out feature – apart from the garish colour – is a geometric pattern that runs across the front. Yes, the away shirt is bad, but at least it’s nowhere near as bad as the goalkeeper’s away shirt.

India, Zimbabwe grapple with middle-order concerns

Zimbabwe’s four-run loss in the first ODI suggests the hosts will continue to competitive against an Indian side missing its senior players

The Preview by Liam Brickhill11-Jul-2015Match factsSunday, 12 July
Start time 0900 local time (0700 GMT)Big pictureIt was expected that the absence of India’s senior players might reduce the gap between India and Zimbabwe in terms of competition, and the first ODI proved to be Zimbabwe’s narrowest ever home defeat. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s last-over mettle meant Elton Chigumbura never really had the chance to target the boundary, and India will be buoyed by their 1-0 series lead. They will, however, also have a few issues to iron out. Apart from Ambati Rayudu and Stuart Binny, who shored up the innings with a record 160-run stand, the batting looked docile and the performance of the middle order will be a worry. India’s bowling is in rather better order, and the spin pair of Harbhajan Singh and Axar Patel will only gain in potency as the pitches tire in the matches to come.Despite another honourable loss, the margin of defeat suggests Zimbabwe will continue to be competitive. The team balance may be affected by the absence of Tinashe Panyangara, who suffered a minor side strain in the first match and will sit out on Sunday, but Zimbabwe still have the resources to run India close, particularly if their own middle order plays to potential. The new playing conditions didn’t seem to have a huge effect on team tactics on Friday. Both sides kept close-in catchers for most of the match, and India were still able to plunder 90 runs from the last 10 overs despite the presence of five fielders on the boundary. The rules appeared to make it easier to defend a total, however, so the toss may not be as great a factor in these matches as it has been in previous winter series in Zimbabwe.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)
Zimbabwe: LLLLL
India: WWLLLIn the spotlightAmbati Rayudu clearly enjoys Zimbabwean conditions. He made an emotional half-century on debut here two years ago – his 63 easing India to a six-wicket win – and started this tour in even more impressive fashion. Rayudu weathered Zimbabwe’s spirited charge with the new ball before shifting gears towards the end of the innings, finishing with a career-best 124 not out. His adhesive qualities may well be needed once again as India look to seal the series.Elton Chigumbura has undergone various incarnations in his decade as an international cricketer. He’s batted as low as No. 9 in the one-day side, but when he was shorn of his pace by a back injury in 2006 his batting contributions started to gain importance. Now Zimbabwe’s No. 4, Chigumbura has taken to the move up the order with aplomb. He started with 54 in the first T20 against Pakistan in May, and has now added two centuries in the same position in ODIs.Team newsTinashe Panyangara pulled up short with a side strain in his 10th over in the first ODI and will sit out Sunday’s game. While there isn’t a clear like-for-like replacement in the squad, Prosper Utseya may be an option, especially as he will help Zimbabwe control the middle overs of the innings, where they let things slip in the first match.Zimbabwe (probable): 1 Vusi Sibanda, 2 Chamu Chibhabha, 3 Hamilton Masakadza, 4 Elton Chigumbura (captain), 5 Sean Williams, 6 Sikandar Raza, 7 Richmond Mutumbami (wk), 8 Prosper Utseya, 9 Graeme Cremer, 10 Donald Tiripano, 11 Brian Vitori.India have little reason to change their playing XI, and the contingent of middle order hopefuls will be eager to capitalise on another chance to showcase their talent.India (probable): 1 M Vijay, 2 Ajinkya Rahane (captain), 3 Ambati Rayudu, 4 Manoj Tiwary, 5 Robin Uthappa (wk), 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Stuart Binny, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Axar Patel, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Dhawal Kulkarni.Pitch and conditionsThe first hour will remain a challenging one for batsmen against the new ball, but the opening match showed there was profit in occupying the crease. Without the merest hint of rain about, the pitch will remain dry and is expected to ease out during the day.Stats and trivia Ambati Rayudu has been dismissed only twice in four innings in Zimbabwe and has scored 225 at an average of 112.5. In nine innings at No. 4 for Zimbabwe, Elton Chigumbura has scored 427 runs at an average of 61.00 and a strike rate of 95.73. In the eight ODIs that have been played at Harare Sports Club in the month of July, the average first innings score is 245. Chasing doesn’t seem to be an advantage either, with a 4-4 split in wins batting first and second.Quotes”If we get a chance to bat up front again early in the morning it’s crucial, with the Dukes ball that does swing and seam a bit, that we’ve got to give the bowlers a lot more respect.”
.”Obviously when you play at this level the main thing is to be consistent, and I’m going to try by all means to ride on the way I’m playing at the moment.”

Rogers a sign of changed times

All must live in a post-Phillip Hughes world, where the protection of the head and the region around it is given far greater attention due to the unimaginable events of last summer. As a result, Chris Rogers has been ruled out of the first Test in Dominic

Daniel Brettig in Roseau02-Jun-2015

Chris Rogers was ruled out after a lengthy chat with Michael Clarke, Darren Lehmann and team doctor Peter Brukner•Getty Images

Chris Rogers complained of a headache the morning after his blow to the head, but had felt worse. Peter Brukner had certainly seen worse, including when Rogers himself was struck in the back of the helmet when fielding close to the bat at the Gabba last year. Michael Clarke and Darren Lehmann want to choose their best XI, and for the past 19 matches that has included Rogers as the steady, calming presence at the top of the order. On Monday morning before training at Windsor Park, these four men debated Rogers’ availability for the first West Indies Test in Dominica. It was a lengthy and at times animated exchange, with plenty of arm waving evident from a distance. The final result had Rogers ruled out of the match due to signs of concussion after the impact from a local net bowler that momentarily stunned him on Sunday.Once upon a time, this dialogue would have gone another way. As the player protested his readiness, the coach and captain would have allowed him to continue batting in the nets and let him take his place in the side unless there was major evidence of trouble. The advice of the team doctor – or physio in earlier years – would have been just that.In the extreme case of Justin Langer, he fought through repeated blows to the helmet until 2006, when a particularly sickening hit from Makhaya Ntini in Johannesburg left him badly shaken and set him on the road to retirement within a year. Nevertheless, in the second innings Langer was physically blocked from leaving the dressing room in his batting gear by the captain Ricky Ponting and team manager Steve Bernard, as Australia stuttered through a nervy fourth innings chase. Now, however, all must live in a post-Phillip Hughes world, where the protection of the head and the region around it is given far greater attention due to the unimaginable events of last summer. Brukner, of course, had flown instantly from Melbourne to Sydney upon word of Hughes’ injury reaching him, and stood ashen-faced alongside the family as they dealt with the pain of a loss that will forever influence thinking about the dangers inherent in the game.”I think there’s probably a few players that wouldn’t have played as many Test matches as they did if that was the case long ago,” Clarke said of changing times. “But, I think there’s obviously a lot of research done by the experts in all sports. You know, it is spoken about a lot – certainly when I spent some time at home before coming here – in the AFL and in the rugby league in particular.”There’s been a lot spoken about with concussion and as hard as it is on Chris, I think credit needs to go to Peter Brukner, our team doctor. He’s an expert in this field and he believes Chris has those symptoms and it wouldn’t be smart form him to take the field. So, look, I always want to win, I always love seeing Australian cricket have success. But at the end of the day I’d rather see the health and safety of the individual come first and foremost, and in this case that’s exactly what we’re doing and I think it’s a really smart decision.”The smartness or rightness of the decision will be of only scant solace to Rogers, who finds himself out of the Test team at the outset of dual tours that have been billed well in advance as his final cricketing lap of the world. Ruled out for medical reasons is not the same as being dropped, but now the opportunity passes on to others, likely Shaun Marsh and Adam Voges, to seal their places in the Test team. Brukner said that Rogers tried to talk him around “as they do”, and Clarke placed himself in the opener’s shoes.”Oh, look, I think Chris is exactly like me,” he said. “He wants to play, as I want him to play, but he also understands and respects that there is a lot more to it than just walking back out onto the field and playing again, as I’m sure the doc would have said, if he gets hit again who knows what the consequences are, and I don’t think anybody wants to see that happen for the sake of missing one game. You know, that’s the way it is.”In some ways, it appeared as though Rogers knew he was in trouble from the moment of the ball after he was hit. He had shrugged off the blow in the nets, as is traditional, but a wild haymaker at the next delivery drew a self-recriminatory scythe at the stumps. Rogers has been so prolific for so long it can be easy to forget there is a fragility to him common to all batsmen, and whether he appreciates it or not, some time to take stock before returning in Jamaica may not be a bad thing.Meanwhile, Australia will try to go on without him in Dominica, much as West Indies will battle without their own left-handed limpet Shivnarine Chanderpaul. They will do so because they never again wish to feel the way they felt on November 25, 2014, a day that ensures no doctor’s opinion will ever be taken lightly.Asked about this episode in light of that one, Nathan Lyon conveyed its scarring by saying very little at all. “You know the answer to that,” he said. “So I don’t really need to go into that over here, sorry.” Australia never want to go back there, and so Rogers must sit out this match.

Misfiring teams seek turnaround

Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad will aim to click in unison and drift away from the congestion at the bottom half of the table when they meet in Mohali on Monday

The Preview by Deivarayan Muthu26-Apr-2015Match factsMonday, April 27, 2015
Start time 2000 local (1430 GMT)Big pictureHaving lost four out of six games each, Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad will seek to step up and get their campaigns back on track. Both sides got smothered during their respective chases on Saturday – with Kings XI sinking to the bottom – and are still fiddling with their combination in search of stability. Whichever team fires collectively on Monday will drift away from the congestion at the bottom half of the table.Sunrisers finally had Trent Boult and Dale Steyn bowling together but it left their middle order lighter than usual. The Indian investments in KL Rahul, Naman Ojha and Hanuma Vihari have not only struggled to force the pace but have also found it difficult to keep the scorecard ticking. And this is where Kane Williamson could be crucial. Ravi Bopara has been tidy both with the ball and bat, but Sunrisers need a failsafe and they need it right now.Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see if Kings XI Punjab bring back Glenn Maxwell after the procession against Chennai Super Kings. The hosts will also want their other two big overseas recruits – Mitchell Johnson and David Miller – to make substantial contributions rather than flicker briefly.Form guideKings XI Punjab LWLLW (last five matches, more recent first)
Sunrisers Hyderabad LWLLWWatch out for…Sunrisers captain David Warner and his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan have accounted for 51.4% of the runs made by the team’s batsmen at an average of above 40 each. Considering the thin middle order, the openers will have to take it upon themselves to steer Sunrisers to a healthy total. On the other hand, Sandeep Sharma and Anureet Singh will aim to break the opening stand quickly and make inroads. In addition to swinging the new ball, the pair has been effective with the yorkers at the death. The two are at the top of the wicket-takers list for the team with 17 wickets them. “I would even trust them when it comes to bowling on a wicket where there isn’t going to be swing,” Johnson had said.Stats and triviaSunrisers have only 12 scores in excess of 160 in the past three seasons, the least by any IPL teamSunrisers and Kings XI have 2-2 record in the IPL so far. This will be Kings XI’s first home game in Mohali this season. In 2014, they played seven games in Mohali, winning six, including four Champions League T20 matches.Quotes”The middle order has to wake up and get runs for the team. If the middle order keeps batting like this then there is going to be too much pressure on Warner and Dhawan at the top of the order.”
