Cobham Oval in Whangarei has become the latest addition to the rota of international cricket venues, benefiting from a push within New Zealand Cricket (NZC) to play Tests at specialist cricket grounds. While limited-overs and Twenty20 matches are largely the preserve of stadiums like Eden Park in Auckland, NZC has pursued the use of more traditional venues for Test cricket in recent times, meaning an increase in the number of Tests for grounds like Wellington’s Basin Reserve.Whangarei’s venue falls neatly within those parameters, with additional upgrade work having been done to appease the ICC match referee Alan Hurst when he made his inspection of the ground earlier this year. The ground was used for its maiden first-class fixture in March 2009, and has hosted eight in total, in addition to a tour match between Pakistan and a New Zealand Invitational XI in January 2011.Gary Bell, the chief executive of Northland Cricket, said the development of the ground had been done with plenty of care.”We are delighted to have gained ICC approval to host international cricket,” said Bell. “A lot of hard work has gone into the ground including creating a separate players’ pavilion with more space and comfort.”One large piece of work was increasing the grass net area and using the soil to reshape the embankment to increase capacity to 5,500. The decision is not only great for Northland Cricket but the region in general with additional visitors attracted to the region once we start hosting events.”New Zealand are scheduled to host Zimbabwe for two Test matches and three ODIs in January 2012.

Buttler stars in Somerset rout

Jos Buttler smashed an unbeaten 72 from 45 balls as Somerset strengthened their chances of reaching the Friends Life t20 quarter-finals with a 15-run win over Gloucestershire at Taunton

08-Jul-2011
ScorecardJos Buttler smashed an unbeaten 72 from 45 balls as Somerset strengthened their chances of reaching the Friends Life t20 quarter-finals with a 15-run win over Gloucestershire at Taunton.A sell-out crowd saw the home side slip to 40 for three after losing the toss before Buttler, who hit three sixes and seven fours, added 57 in 7.4 overs with James Hildreth who made 34. Kieron Pollard then clubbed 31 not out to help put on a further 73 in 6.3 overs in a total of 170 for four.David Payne, who dismissed Marcus Trescothick second ball, was the pick of the Gladiators bowlers with 2 for 27. In reply, Gloucestershire were going well on 114 for two after 14 overs, Kevin O’Brien having made 34. But Hamish Marshall fell for 54 in the closing overs as the visitors collapsed to 155 for nine, with Murali Kartik taking two for 16.O’Brien and Marshall had put on 51 for the first wicket in just five overs. O’Brien hit five fours and a six in facing just 18 balls, while Marshall went on to face 44 deliveries, hitting five fours. It was spinners Kartik and Arul Suppiah, who took one for 21, who swung the game Somerset’s way, both extracting plenty of turn from the pitch.Pollard did his bit with three for 25 from his four overs, while Lewis Gregory claimed two for 35 and was responsible for three catches and a run out. Earlier, Buttler and Hildreth had been content to milk singles and twos as they launched Somerset’s recovery. But once Hildreth was caught behind off Jack Taylor, having faced 35 balls, Buttler went on the attack in devastating style. The 20-year-old has not been in the best of form this season, but that did not show as he struck the ball sweetly.Pollard would have been run out when he had made only a single had wicketkeeper Richard Coughtrie not dislodged the stumps before Hamish Marshall’s throw reached him.The big West Indian went on to strike one ball from Muttiah Muralitharan into the River Tone with a massive six over long on, to the delight of a sell-out 7,000 crowd who were able to celebrate a home success.

West Brom must secure Swift signing

West Bromwich Albion are set to have a major rebuild this summer following the arrival of four-time promotion-winning manager Steve Bruce, who has been set the task to get the Baggies back into the Premier League.

The Black Country club has fallen short of taking the opportunity to bounce back into the top flight following an inconsistent and disappointing season at The Hawthorns that has led the club to fall into tenth in the league table currently.

The club and manager clearly recognise big changes and improvements need to be made at the end of the season, with Bruce openly giving detail on the plans for the transfer window.

Bruce told BirminghamLive:

“I think we need to freshen the whole squad up. How big? I would think it would be substantial – I hope.

“I think we need as many as five or six – a major overhaul is needed.”

With that being said, West Brom have been in hot pursuit of out-of-contract Reading midfielder John Swift who has had another impressive season with his Championship side and it has been reported that the Baggies have even sent scouts to watch him play this season on several occasions.

Swift has been a consistent and creative attacking threat for the Royals this season scoring 11 goals and contributing 13 assists in 38 league appearances, but his impressive G/A only tells part of the story of his performances this season from the centre of the pitch.

The £25k-per-week ace who was hailed “super talented” by Veljko Paunovic averages 66.8 touches and 2.7 key passes per game, as well as being successful in the majority of his dribbles (58%) and creating ten big chances for his team, proving he is an absolute nuisance for his opponents in the advanced midfield role he is deployed in.

The Reading star was even dubbed the “Championship James Maddison” by journalist Josh Holland, who sang the praises of Swift to GIVEMESPORT:

“It’s quite impressive. Whenever I’ve seen him play this season, he reminds me of a Championship level James Maddison in terms of he comes deep, and it always goes through Maddison, which is the same as Swift at Reading.”

There is no doubt that Swift would be a huge upgrade and make considerably more impact on the West Brom attacking third than Grady Diangana, who has been largely inconsistent in his position for the Baggies this season with just two goals in 40 league appearances.

Ultimately, if Bruce does manage to secure the signature of their hot prospect he will need to rethink what part Diangana will play in the team going forward as the priority is to win games and get back into the Premier League as soon as they possibly can.

Newcastle dealt Romelu Lukaku blow

Newcastle United have been dealt a fresh transfer setback over Premier League centre-forward Romelu Lukaku…

What’s the talk?

According to Calcio Mercato, the Magpies are one of the clubs capable of affording a deal to sign the Belgian striker this summer, with Italian giants Milan also said to be keen on the attacker.

However, the report states that the ex-Inter man is not keen on a move to the other occupants of the San Siro and is not interested in a switch to St. James’ Park either, as his future at Chelsea remains unclear.

Supporters will be gutted

The Toon supporters will surely be left feeling gutted by this news as it is a major blow to any plans from the club to sign Lukaku this summer.

Whilst the hitman has struggled for form at Stamford Bridge throughout the campaign, he has proven over the course of his career that he is a lethal striker at the top level.

In the Premier League this term, he has scored five goals in 23 appearances for Thomas Tuchel’s side – scoring twice in four Champions League starts.

This is a far cry from the form he was producing for Inter during his time in Italy. The Belgian forward managed a whopping 47 goals and 13 assists in 65 Serie A starts in his two years at the San Siro, with these statistics proving that Lukaku’s goal record this season is not a fair reflection of his talents as he has showcased his ability elsewhere – including at other teams in England.

His overall Premier League record, having played for West Brom, Everton and Manchester United, is sublime. He has scored 118 goals in 275 outings in the English top-flight and this shows that he has the quality to be a quality player at this level and, therefore, could have had a significant impact at Newcastle.

This is why his lack of interest in a switch to St. James’ Park is a major blow that will leave supporters gutted as he has the potential to be a regular goalscorer in the league. His magnificent form for Inter and his previous spells in England suggests that he is a clinical finisher and that his current time at Chelsea is a blip, which is why missing out on him is a setback for PIF and Howe.

Rangers: GvB dealt Sam Johnstone blow

Glasgow Rangers have been dealt a huge blow in their bid to bring goalkeeper Sam Johnstone to Ibrox this summer.

What’s the Word?

That’s according to a report by Football Insider, who claim that sources close to Johnstone have revealed that the shot-stopper wants to join Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur on the expiration of his West Bromwich Albion contract at the end of the current campaign.

This is sure to come as a huge blow to Rangers, as Giovanni van Bronckhorst is looking at a replacement for Allan McGregor – who himself looks increasingly likely to be leaving Ibrox this summer.

The Light Blues have shown interest in the England international who has kept 15 clean sheets in 36 Championship matches so far this season as West Brom has struggled.

With the likes of Newcastle United, West Ham United, and Southampton all linked with the highly-rated stopper in recent weeks, it’s clear to see why missing out on Johnstone could send Rangers into panic mode.

A potential replacement for McGregor?

Allan McGregor has so often been the saviour for Rangers over the years, producing big moments and penalty saves exactly when the side needs them, but this campaign has looked like a step too far.

There have been far too many mistakes as the Ibrox side has slipped behind in the title race, and the keeper has cost the club a fair few points since January.

As such, signing Johnstone on a pre-contract would be an excellent move. With three caps for England and still just 29 years of age, Giovanni van Bronckhorst could do no wrong in making a move for the shot-stopper.

Indeed, with the ‘keeper having been omitted from West Brom’s previous two matchday squads due to his contract running down, Rangers are in as good of a position as any to offer him terms.

With a market value of £7.2m, any side that secures the services of the 29-year-old could also make a solid profit in the future if they decide to sell him on, making this move an absolute no-brainer.

Wolves: Bruno Lage’s update on Trincao

Wolves manager Bruno Lage believes Francisco Trincao has a big future ahead of him, amidst his expiring loan deal at the Molineux side.

What’s the word?

The latest report via Birmingham Mail includes Lage’s thoughts on Trincao’s time in the West Midlands.

Despite stating that the 22-year-old has a “big future”, the Wolves boss has not held back on what has been a disappointing season for the Barcelona loanee.

Offering a brutal but truthful sentiment, Lage said: “The first seven or eight games were very good and he received a call to the national team in that period. He was unlucky that he got the virus.

“The first three months were very good and he deserved to score. He had two or three good chances. In the middle it was not so good.”

The Old Gold boss went on to say: “We’ve talked about it since the first day because we’ve not scored too many goals. It’s not just about Trincao, but when you look at your numbers. One goal and one assist is not good.”

Brutally axed

The sentiments from Bruno Lage almost confirms what the majority of fans had already gathered. It does not look as though Lage will have Trincao at his disposal next season.

In truth, it would be wise of the Portuguese winger to find an alternative environment to shine, with Wolves’ lack of superiority in attack a large factor in his misfiring statistics this season.

Wolves have created just 35 big chances in the Premier League – a stat that ranks them in 17th place in the big chances created table.

Trincao – who has seen his lack of end product dubbed “ridiculous” by The Athletic’s Tim Spiers – has of course not helped himself or Wolves with his eight assists in 27 Liga Portugal appearances.

With that in mind, the £25m-rated Trincao clearly does not suit Lage’s system, so he would be better off returning to parent club Barcelona for next season, in a move that would suit both parties.
