Maitland-Niles requesting he joins Everton

This is a transfer deadline day which could either see Everton end up with three potential new signings or it could all fall apart.

Knowing the Toffees, it feels more likely that the latter eventuality will have fallen upon them by 11pm this evening.

What’s the word?

Everton are trying to conclude deals for Salomon Rondon and Luis Diaz before the window slams shut.

However, they are also trying to wrap up a move for Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Rafa Benitez and co lodged a bid to sign the 24-year-old on loan with a future fee yesterday but that was battered away by Arsenal.

Since then, though, Maitland-Niles has revealed his outrage on social media and will now have talks with the Gunners about leaving north London.

David Ornstein provided an update on the player’s future on deadline day, tweeting: “Ainsley Maitland-Niles plans to meet with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta this afternoon & request he be allowed to join Everton (EFC offer is loan plus option to buy). AFC must decide whether to sanction 24yo’s exit or keep unhappy player.”

Brands must act

If Everton really want Arsenal’s versatile youngster, they will need to make their move quickly and provide a bid that’s more reasonable than the one they proposed on Monday.

Although the 24-year-old hasn’t played much first-team football of late, he’d still be a great signing for the Toffees.

Firstly, they could do with an alternative right-back to Seamus Coleman. The Irishman’s contract expires the summer after next and there is no guarantee that he will sign new terms with the Merseyside outfit.

Furthermore, Everton cannot rely on the fitness of Fabian Delph and Jean-Philippe Gbamin in the middle of the park to provide them with much cover.

With that in mind, Maitland-Niles feels like a worthwhile acquisition. He could play on either side of the defence while offering a valuable option in the middle of the park as well.

He was part of Arsenal’s FA Cup-winning side in 2019/20, a run to which he contributed by playing at wing-back.

Because of the Gunners’ options in a central area, he has been restricted to featuring in that position. However, during a loan spell with West Brom last term, he stood out in the middle of the park throughout 15 Premier League appearances.

Maitland-Niles wasn’t involved in a goal at The Hawthorns but won an impressive 1.5 tackles and made 1.1 interceptions per game.

He was a classic box-to-box player, advancing forward and carrying the ball expertly into offensive areas. That saw him break opposition lines and complete 1.1 dribbles per game.

On that evidence, Everton should be doing all they can to conclude a deal for him. He is eager to escape Arsenal and is sitting on a plate for the Toffees, so Marcel Brands has to act.

Celtic: Paul Robinson drops Giorgios Giakoumakis verdict

Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson believes that Celtic have pulled off an “amazing bit of recruitment” following the arrival of striker Giorgios Giakoumakis from VVV-Venlo.

The Lowdown: Giakoumakis arrives with a big reputation

Playing his part in an outstanding 2020/21 campaign, the Greece international earned headlines after finishing as top scorer in the Eredivisie with 26 goals [The Scotsman].

After completing a move to Glasgow on deadline day, former Tottenham goalkeeper Robinson believes that the Hoops have landed a bargain in the 26-year-old as they seek to reclaim the Premiership title.

The Latest: Robinson hails ‘amazing bit of recruitment’

It appears that Celtic may have brought in the forward for a fraction of his former club’s valuation, too.

Speaking to The Celtic Exchange Podcast, journalist Anthony Joseph detailed that Giakoumakis would likely have cost £8.6m to bring to Parkhead if VVV-Venlo had managed to avoid relegation from the Dutch top flight.

Eventually acquiring him for around £2.5m [The Scottish Sun], Robinson believes that Celtic have pulled off a wonderful capture.

In an exclusive interview with Football Insider, the 41-year-old claimed: “It was an incredible achievement to finish top scorer in a relegated side. It shows that he is a very good striker.

“For the price that they’ve paid it looks like an amazing bit of recruitment.

“Of course, there is a different level of expectation and pressure at Celtic though. It will be a big test for him, playing in front of those fans.

“From Celtic’s point of view though, it is not a risk because the fee is very reasonable.”

The Verdict: Giakoumakis has the requisite qualities to succeed at Celtic

Despite his goalscoring exploits in mainland Europe, Robinson correctly points out the high standards that Giakoumakis will need to meet on a weekly basis at Celtic.

However, the 6 foot 1 ace looks more than equipped to make a solid start to life in Scotland. He brings a bustling physical presence to the attack, illustrated in his average aerial duel success rate of four per game last season [WhoScored].

Perhaps most importantly, the Greek also offers a potent goal threat. In 2020/21, he managed to constantly provide an attacking threat for a poor VVV-Venlo outfit, registering 3.2 shots on average per game.

Currently getting up to speed fitness wise, Hoops supporters will hope he can hit the ground running in the east end of Glasgow.

Mushtaq Ahmed leaves ICL

Mushtaq Ahmed, the former Pakistan legspinner, has confirmed his exit from the ICL but has denied his departure was linked to his recent appointment as the ECB’s spin-bowling coach. He said a nagging knee injury, which sidelined him during the current season, prompted his decision.”I have reached an understanding with them to part ways,” Mushtaq told . “I have sent them my resignation.” Mushtaq joined the ICL in February 2008 as part of the Lahore Badshahs, an all-Pakistan team. He played seven Twenty20 games and took 12 wickets at an average of 13.66 and economy-rate of 5.85.Mushtaq, currently back in Lahore, said he will begin his England role late next month. “I will definitely be joining the England team in the last week of November but if the ECB wants me to start assisting their bowlers before that in India I have no problems with that,” he said. England will be touring India in November-December, with the seven-ODI series starting on November 14.Mushtaq, 38, last played for Pakistan in 2003. Since then he forged a successful county career, and in 2003 he became the first bowler in five years to take 100 wickets in a season. That performance was instrumental in guiding Sussex to their first Championship title, a feat they repeated in 2006 and 2007. He retired from county cricket after the 2008 season.

WHU fans want to sign Embolo

West Ham United fans are eager to sign Breel Embolo after they were linked with a move for the Switzerland international.

This summer transfer window is an important one for the Hammers. Last term, they finished in sixth place in the Premier League table, meaning they will be competing in the Europa League group stages this coming season. However, they have made just one signing so far in Alphonse Areola (whufc.com), and they remain light in the striker position – David Moyes has just Michail Antonio at his disposal in that role.

They are looking at several strikers, it seems, and according to reliable club insider ExWHUemployee, the Irons are looking at Borussia Monchengladbach’s £14.4m-valued Breel Embolo (Transfermarkt). He has managed 14 goals and 14 assists in 75 games for the German side (Transfermarkt), while he also impresses for Switzerland at Euro 2020 as his country reached the quarter-finals.

The Hammers fans, it seems, want to capture the former Schalke man, and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Embolo link below

“Embolo would be an unbreel signing. Was class at the Euro’s and has matured a lot from when we wanted him a few years ago. Smart signing, but not enough to solve our striker problems. He would have to be accompanied by an Abraham”

“I’d be buzzing if we got embolo thought he looked really good at the euros”

“Unpopular opinion : breel embolo from Gladbach would be an underrated signing. His performance at euros sadly have put his price up. But he’s a fighter, RW, ST or AF. Explosive and faster than MA”

“We need someone simular to Antonio, Embolo is like a clone of Antonio he is fast and strong and doesn’t stop running. I would take Embolo ahead of Abraham, I rate him that highly”

“From what I seen in the euros I personally think he would be perfect for us! Get him in on loan and see what he can do”

“With the addition of those 3, who would you realistically go for? For me, Herrera from Man City, seen him a handful of times & every time he looks like he could add some strength & creativity in the midfield. I’d be happy with Embolo on loan, looked a handful in the Euro’s”

Goldson set for new Rangers contract

Connor Goldson is reportedly close to signing a new three-year contract at Rangers, which will undoubtedly be a huge boost for Steven Gerrard at Ibrox.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Record, the 28-year-old defender is set to sign a new deal with Rangers, with an announcement expected in the coming days following a breakthrough in talks.

It is suggested that the former Brighton man is targeting title domination with Gerrard’s side after playing a key role in their unbeaten title win last season and is therefore keen to extend his stay, despite the likes of West Ham being credited with an interest in signing him this summer.

A huge boost for Gerrard?

Since signing for Rangers in 2018, Goldson has gone on to establish himself as a key player at Ibrox, making 162 appearances and contributing an impressive 16 goals and five assists.

Last season saw him appear in all 38 of Rangers’ league matches, as they conceded just 13 goals in total, which emphasises just how important he is to Gerrard, who will surely be delighted to keep him at the club ahead of the upcoming title defence and Champions League return.

The 41-year-old manager is clearly a huge fan of the centre-back, as he sang his praises last season, saying:

“I think Connor Goldson has been outstanding this season, showing incredible leadership alongside James on and off the pitch.

“His passing has been next level and he has been working hard on it. He has put the work in and we are proud of the level he is playing at.”

A previous report from The Athletic’s Rangers correspondent Jordan Campbell had suggested that Rangers were willing to lose Goldson for nothing next summer when his current contract expires if it meant keeping him for the 2021/22 campaign, but it seems as if they will not be forced into that situation following this latest update, which will surely delight Rangers fans.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

A three-year extension will see Goldson extend his stay at Ibrox until 2025, by which time he will be 32, so it would not be a surprise to see him finish his career with the Gers, by which time, he will hopefully have added to his trophy collection.

And, in other news… Gerrard can finally axe “faultless” Rangers outcast, he’s blown his Ibrox career

Pothas fumes over 'ridiculous situation'

Nic Pothas: ‘This is my job, and if someone tries to stop me working I would go to court’ © Getty Images

Nic Pothas, the Hampshire wicketkeeper-batsman who played in the Indian Cricket League earlier this year, has threatened to take legal action if he is barred from Twenty20 Champions League in case his team qualifies for the event.”It is a ridiculous situation,” Pothas told the . “What the Indians [referring to the Indian board] fail to acknowledge is that there are rules and regulations on this side of the world.”We have rights as professionals and, if I needed to, I would seek redress through the law. This is my job, and if someone tries to stop me working I would go to court.”However, Lalit Modi, the commissioner of the Indian Premier League, and one of the key figures in the organisation of the Champions League, reiterated that county sides that field ICL players will not be able to take part in the tournament. “One of the rules for ICC tournaments is that players cannot appear in unofficial tournaments. That is that.”We have all discussed this issue, and the boards know where they stand,” Modi said. “New Zealand even went as far as dropping Shane Bond from their team because he played for the ICL, and there will be no exceptions made for English counties.”In case Pothas goes to court, he has the benefit of precedence: his fellow ICL players Andrew Hall, Justin Kemp and Johan van der Wath, had on April 30, won an appeal against an ECB block on them being registered to play in England this summer.

SAFC fans want Pritchard

Sunderland fans are eager for the club to sign Alex Pritchard this summer after the club were linked with a move for the 28-year-old.

The Black Cats are preparing for the 21/22 campaign, one in which they will once again be targetting promotion to the Championship. However, despite losing a number of players such as Josh Scowen, Max Power, Grant Leadbitter and Charlie Wyke, they have so far made just one signing – a 20-year-old goalkeeper called Jacob Carney (safc.com).

However, it seems they are at least looking at several targets, one of which is Alex Pritchard as per Football League World. The £2.25m-valued attacking midfielder (Transfermarkt) is currently a free agent and struggled at Huddersfield, but he has plenty of talent and could be an astute signing for Sunderland if they can capture his services.

The Black Cats supporters, it appears, would be keen to take him to Stadium of Light, and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts on the speculation.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Pritchard link below
