Pundit drops absolutely brutal Arteta verdict

Former England international Carlton Palmer insists that Mikel Arteta cannot replicate the style of Manchester City at Arsenal because the players simply aren’t good enough.

The Gunners are in dire straits after an absolutely appalling start to the season.

Arsenal have not scored a goal in the Premier League and have lost 2-0 to both Brentford and Chelsea, and been thumped 5-0 by City.

Arteta, of course, worked as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at the Etihad Stadium between 2016 and 2019.

He has routinely attempted to implement a style of football in which Arsenal keep possession, pass the ball, and press high up the pitch.

This season, that has not paid any dividends and Palmer believes that the tactical style is actually limiting some of the club’s best players, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gabon international scored just 10 goals last season, in 29 games, having scored 22 times in 36 games the campaign prior.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Palmer said: “You look at Arteta who’s coming in there, he wants to give it a Man City flare, but they haven’t got Man City players.

“The striker, who will score you 25, 30 goals, has gone off the boil because now it’s pass, pass, pass. He’s not that player. He need the ball fed through for him to run onto to score.

“He needs the ball gone early for him to score. Arsenal have lost that identity of what they’re about. Arteta’s trying to bring a Man City feel to Arsenal when he hasn’t got the players to do that. So I’ve said before the start of the season, I think Arsenal will struggle, I really do believe they’ll struggle, I don’t see them being any better than ninth or tenth in the league.”

Three internationals in SNGPL squad

SNGPL squad
  • Mohammad Hafeez (capt), Adil Raza, Adnan Akmal (wk), Asad Ali, Azhar Shafiq, Imran Ali, Imran Khalid, Khurram Shehzad, Misbah-ul-Haq, Saleem Mughal, Samiullah Khan, Tauqeer Hussain, Umar Akmal and Yasir Arafat.

Mohammad Hafeez will lead a 14-member Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL) squad in their quest to be the first Pakistan side to win the Mohammad Nissar Trophy since it was first introduced in 2006 as an annual fixture between the first-class champions of Pakistan and India.Apart from Hafeez, the squad includes two other players with international experience – Misbah-ul-Haq and Samiullah Khan. In contrast Delhi has picked seven players with exposure to international cricket.Misbah, who has appeared in 10 Tests and 40 one-dayers for Pakistan, joined the SNGPL team late after fulfilling his national obligations. In the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final, he scored 64 and 161. Hafeez averaged nearly 60 from 10 matches while Samiullah, a left-arm fast bowler who has played two ODIs, was the side’s highest wicket-taker and right-arm medium-pacers Imran Ali and Asad Ali took more than 30 wickets each. The SNGPL squad also has Adil Raza and Umar Akmal, who were part of the Pakistan side for the Under-19 World Cup. Raza picked up 12 wickets at 12.16 from five matches in the tournament. Akmal was SNGPL’s highest scorer in the last season, aggregating 855 runs from nine games. Yasir Arafat, who has also played U-19 for Pakistan, averaged 40.50 in the season. The four-day match is scheduled to be played at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi between September 15 and 18.

Arthur: 'The game is on a knife-edge'

Andrew Miller presents the plays of the third day of the third Test at Edgbaston

South Africa’s coach, Mickey Arthur, admitted he was “very, very disappointed” with his team’s performance, on a day when their hopes of sealing an unassailable 2-0 series win, and with it their first triumph in England since 1965, were dented by Paul Collingwood’s gritty hundred and a typically flamboyant and momentum-seizing 94 from Kevin Pietersen.By the close of the third day, England had overturned a first-innings deficit of 83, and were handily placed on 297 for 6 – a lead of 214 and with Collingwood still unbeaten on 101. Despite at one stage reducing England to 104 for 4, South Africa’s seamers let the ascendancy slip away in a performance that Arthur said was “simply not good enough”.”The game is on a knife-edge,” said Arthur. “We had an opportunity today which we didn’t take, which was disappointing. We’ve asked for patience, pressure, we asked for bowling in partnerships, and to bat in partnerships. We asked the guys to forget about outcomes, and unfortunately we forgot about everything we spoke about.”Despite their ten-wicket victory at Headingley, and the dominance they had enjoyed on the first two days of this match, South Africa are keenly aware of their record in England since their readmission to Test cricket. They’ve led in each of three series since 1994, and emerged with two draws and a loss in 1998.”This is a team that’s very desperate to win the series,” said Arthur. “There’s a lot of hunger, which is not a bad thing. It’s a good thing. But the disappointment was tangible in the dressing room.”As Pietersen and Collingwood embarked on their momentum-changing stand, South Africa were devoid of a response with the ball – in particular their principal strike bowler, Morne Morkel, who was clubbed for 75 runs in 15 overs. He did, however, claim the wicket of Andrew Strauss, which was his 100th in first-class cricket – a tally that highlighted just how inexperienced he really is. “Morne’s talent outweighs what we got today,” said Arthur.Arthur did, however, accept that Collingwood’s innings, in the circumstances, was a remarkably composed performance. “He played fantastically well today,” said Arthur. “He’d almost been written off, but he came out today and played unbelievably well, under a lot of pressure. Hats off to Colly, he played fantastically.”As for his own players, Arthur didn’t try to pretend they had had anything other than a chastising day in the field. “The guys’ heads did drop slightly,” he said, “but there was a lot of emotional energy shown today, and not a huge amount of intelligent energy. We ran on emotion, and what we saw there were guys who were completely knackered mentally and physically, because they had an emotional drain today.”Even so, South Africa do have one silver lining as they pick up the pieces of their most disappointing day since the start of the series at Lord’s – the second new ball is due in the very first over of the day, a prospect which Arthur described as a “gift”. “We had a chat in the dressing room,” he said, “and if it works, we will be set 250-60-70, and we believe we can get that. It is very evenly balanced tonight.”

Saints dealt transfer blow over Herrera

Southampton’s hopes of signing Yangel Herrera this summer have taken a blow after it was reported that West Ham have submitted a bid for the Manchester City midfielder.

What’s the word?

It was reported earlier in the summer transfer window that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, along with West Ham and Leeds United, were interested in signing the 23-year-old after his impressive performances on loan with Granada in recent seasons.

Manchester City reportedly want £20m for the Venezuela international as they look to raise transfer funds, which may put him out of the Saints’ transfer range as Hasenhuttl suggested ahead of the transfer window that they would target players for £10m or less this summer.

However, City’s asking price has seemingly not deterred West Ham, with talkSPORT suggesting recently that they have submitted an official bid for the industrious midfielder, which suggests that he could soon be on his way to the London Stadium.

Should Southampton be trying to sign Herrera?

Central midfield is arguably an area in which Southampton need to strengthen ahead of next season, as they looked vulnerable there last term when Oriol Romeu was out of the team, with Ibrahima Diallo struggling to replicate the Spaniard’s performances alongside James Ward-Prowse.

Stuart Armstrong featured there on occasion but he looks at his best out on the right-hand side and doesn’t possess the defensive mindset of someone like Romeu or Diallo, who usually allow Ward-Prowse to push forward and get involved in the attack.

Therefore, you could argue that an all-action midfielder such as Herrera would be an excellent addition to Southampton’s squad ahead of next season, as he would offer them a different option in the midfield whilst also taking some of the pressure off youngsters such as Diallo and Will Smallbone.

The former New York City FC loanee earned rave reviews for his performances in Spain with Granada and posted their fourth-highest WhoScored rating for 2020/21, with commentator Andy West singing his praises last season.

He said: “You have to be incredibly fit to play the style he does – Thursday and Sunday every week – without dropping your standards. And he has done that, it is something that has stood out.

“He has been one of their most important players.”

Therefore, he could definitely be a great option for Hasenhuttl to have next season, and if the Saints are truly interested in him, Martin Semmens will have to act quickly to bring him to St Mary’s following the news that West Ham have made an approach for the 23-year-old.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Jens Cajuste update

Crystal Palace are said to be in the hunt for Midtjylland midfielder Jens Cajuste, as their summer recruitment drive intensifies [SportExpressen via Sport Witness].

Primarily a holding midfielder, the 21-year-old enjoyed a commendable season for the Danish runners-up, making 39 appearances and registering one goal and two assists in that time [Transfermarkt].

Now attracting attention from Premier League clubs, he could have choice to make on his future sooner rather than later.

The Eagles are said to have ‘concrete interest’ in the Swedish youngster, alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leeds United and Newcastle United [Sport Witness].

Furthermore, Cajuste was pulled from his current employers’ UEFA Champions League qualifying match against Celtic yesterday, with murmurings suggesting Midtjylland may not want to ‘risk anything because a big sale may be imminent’ [Sport Witness].

In light of this, no wonder loads of Crystal Palace diehards took to Twitter to express their thoughts on the latest news.

Crystal Palace fans react:

Replying to popular Crystal Palace fan outlet PALACE XTRA, here is what some fans had to say about recent reports:

“Very talented box to box midfielder, great vision, good on the ball. PL ready just yet? Maybe not but great potential. He was the second youngest player in our Euro squad, only featured once as a sub though. But he is likely to play a bigger part in the Qatar WC in 2022.”

Carlton Palmer fires Southampton Graziano Pelle warning

Former Southampton midfielder Carlton Palmer has told The Transfer Tavern that he would be “totally against” Graziano Pelle returning to the Saints.

Pelle enjoyed a successful spell down on the south coast between 2014 and 2016, scoring 30 goals in 80 appearances before going on to join Chinese Super League side Shandong Luneng.

The 36-year-old striker is now a free agent following his exit from Parma, prompting some Southampton fans to call for him to be re-signed.

It is something that Palmer, though, would be against, with the ex-Saint suggesting it would be a backward step for the club.

“I’m totally against it,” Palmer said when asked if the Premier League outfit should bring the Italian back to St. Mary’s.

“Fans, you know, will always put their hands up for a former favourite of theirs to return to the club, but it’s not always a wise move for him to come back. I think that would be a backward step for them.”

Nostalgia aside, there is little reason to re-sign Pelle this summer, with the 6 ft 4 former Southampton striker not having the best of times at Parma. In 13 games, he scored just once before leaving the Serie A outfit at the end of his contract.

Yaremchuk: West Ham’s Abraham alternative

West Ham United could be eyeing a potential alternative to David Moyes’ no.1 target…

What’s the word?

According to the ever-reliable ExWHUemployee on a recent episode of ‘The West Ham Way’ podcast, Gent and Ukraine striker Roman Yaremchuk could emerge as a serious possibility for the Hammers this summer as there is “strong interest” from the club.

The 25-year-old, who recently excelled at Euro 2020, has been following the Irons’ social media accounts and has recently liked posts involving Declan Rice.

Yaremchuk was first mooted with a move to the London Stadium last month, with the Express claiming that the Hammers were one of several teams keeping tabs on the 6 foot 3 talisman.

Ex also claims he is seen as an alternative to Tammy Abraham, who the anonymous source has previously stated is the first-choice option for Moyes this window.

Abraham alternative

It’s hardly a surprise that West Ham could be looking elsewhere as they seem some way apart from Chelsea’s valuation of the England international. The Daily Mail believe they want in excess of £40m, whilst Moyes is said to value him at just £25m.

Yaremchuck would be an intriguing alternative, especially after his performances this summer.

He scored twice and provided one assist in his five appearances at Euro 2020, which included a particularly starring role against the Netherlands in Ukraine’s Group C opener.

“Roman Yaremchuk has had a phenomenal tournament so far. Definitely going to get a move to a top 5 league soon,” claimed journalist Zach Lowry after their second match against North Macedonia.

The £13.5m-rated forward even had Daniel Sturridge impressed when facing England. The former Liverpool star claimed Yaremchuk was “a problem.”

His form on the international stage was merely a continuation from what has been a fine domestic campaign, in which he delivered 23 goals and eight assists in 43 appearances, via Transfermarkt.

Yaremchuk averaged a goal or assist every 115 minutes for Belgian giants Gent and contributed to 41% of all their league goals scored. It’s no wonder the club’s official account dubbed him a “machine” on Twitter at the end of the season.

If he’s available for a cheaper fee than Abraham, then Moyes must consider a move, though he would not arrive with proven experience in England.

But neither did Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal – look how they turned out.

Wolves must sign Odsonne Edouard

New Wolves boss Bruno Lage has been going about his business at Molineux in a remarkably quiet fashion.

It looked all doom and gloom on the transfer front initially, with the fear of Ruben Neves and Adama Traore potentially leaving hanging over them.

However, their window lifted off in some style on Sunday morning when they confirmed the signing of Trincao.

The Portuguese has signed from Barcelona on a loan deal with the view to signing him permanently in a year’s time.

Trincao was first linked with the club earlier this year but it looked as though their interest had gone dry. Though, work continued behind the scenes as Lage made the attacker his second acquisition of the summer.

The 21-year-old is a particularly tricky customer to deal with, completing 2.3 dribbles per match during the 2019/20 campaign at Braga.

He evidently loves taking players on and alongside Traore and Pedro Neto, he could prove devastating in the final third.

All Wolves need to find now is regular goals. Raul Jimenez has made a full recovery from a fractured skull but without his presence, they lacked someone who could find the net regularly.

Neto won the club’s Player of the Season award but he only beat the goalkeeper on five occasions.

Therefore, the arrival of a new striker could be exactly what they need to kick on under a new manager.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-ceballos-zinchenko-euros-felix-lage” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

Wolves have been linked with a move for Celtic attacker Odsonne Edouard in previous months and they may now have an ideal opportunity to sign him.

Leicester looked to have a deal wrapped up to bring him to the King Power for just £15m but they decided against that move and landed Patson Daka from RB Salzburg instead.

Lage has limited money to spend this summer so the price tag should be perfect, especially for a player of his talents.

Blessed with a wonderful first touch and the ability to run the channels, Edouard is a ruthless striker.

He scored 22 goals last term, taking his tally for the Hoops to 83 strikes in 186 matches. That’s a wonderful tally for a player who’s still young at the age of 23.

Speaking about the Frenchman’s game last season, ex-Celtic figure Frank McGarvey commented: “I just love watching Edouard. He has that bit of magic in his feet, and he reminds me of Charlie Nicholas. You just know if he gets the ball just outside of the box the other team are in trouble.

His former coach, Jean-Claude Giuntini, added: “He never doubts his qualities. But this behaviour can create panic – for the opposition defenders.

“He had an excellent sense of anticipation which gave him a remarkable ability to read play. And he had a considerable skill for shooting – his efforts were targeted, precise and powerful.”

Some may doubt whether he can transition smoothly from Scottish football to England but you only need to look at the impact of Virgil van Dijk since moving from Celtic.

Edouard would surely thrive in the Premier League and at £15m he would be a mere snip for a Wolves team lacking goals.

Ex-Rangers ace sets huge challenge for Gerrard - exclusive

Graham Roberts insists Rangers will want to win either the double or the treble in 2021/22 after lifting the Scottish Premiership trophy last season.

Steven Gerrard’s side were in unbelievable form throughout the campaign and won the title at a canter, ending the season a staggering 25 points clear of second-placed Celtic.

However, Rangers somewhat struggled in the cup competitions.

Indeed, they were knocked out of the Scottish League Cup by St Mirren, while they also lost in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals by St Johnstone on penalties.

In the Europa League, Rangers were beaten 3-1 on aggregate by Slavia Prague in the Round of 16.

They were irrepressible in the league, however, but Roberts believes that Gerrard will be targeting cup glory along with winning the league next season, to prove last season was no flash in the pan.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he made the claim that the club will do everything they can to strengthen Gerrard’s squad, and he said: “A big target. You win one, you want to go and win the second one now, and I would think the next thing will be to do the double or the treble so you’ve got to get a big enough squad, and I’m sure they will.”
