Warner and Khawaja build on New South Wales gains

David Warner’s first-class debut took on a similar tempo to his international starts for Australia as he arrived to help push New South Wales’ lead to 136. The home batsmen had all made useful contributions as they overhauled Western Australia’s 210 and then Warner entered at No. 6 and quickly made a mark alongside the increasingly attacking Usman Khawaja.Khawaja followed his maiden century against Queensland last week with another valuable contribution of 77 not out. He picked up the pace late in the day and will look to register another hundred on the third morning.Warner, who exploded into Australia’s limited-overs plans this summer, had to wait all season for a chance under a baggy blue, but it was a memorable opening. He struck five fours and a six off Aaron Heal while moving to 30 at better than a run a ball. However, Warner was out-thought on 42 by Josh Mangan and was caught at second slip off his glove.Ed Cowan and Greg Mail both opened with half-centuries in a solid stand of 119 before Cowan was lbw to David Bandy on 58. Mail joined Cowan in the dressing room after lunch when he was stumped for 59 going down the pitch to Heal.Ben Rohrer (34) also got used to the conditions before he departed to a take in the gully, giving Bandy his second wicket. The same thing happened to the captain Dominic Thornely, who reached 56 and was lbw to Brad Knowles. In the end the hits and misses weren’t a problem and the Blues have control of a match both sides are desperate to win to avoid finishing the season in last.

Everton continue to eye Maitland-Niles

The transfer window has only been closed for a matter of a month but Everton are already considering their January targets.

It emerged over the weekend that the Toffees might be contenders to sign Aaron Ramsey from Juventus but he’s not the only Arsenal associated player linked with a move to Merseyside.

What’s the word?

An individual Everton were keen on signing throughout the final stages of the summer window was Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

They lodged a bid to sign the player on loan that Arsenal unfortunately rejected.

The man in question wasn’t happy with that decision, taking to Instagram in dismay as he revealed he just wanted to play football.

The Gunners had been seeking a permanent deal for the versatile defender and midfielder but Everton could return with an improved offer in January.

According to reports (Via Transfer Market Web), Rafa Benitez’s side are planning a winter swoop for the England international.

Gray 2.0

It’s well documented just how little money Everton have to invest in the playing squad at the moment.

Benitez and Marcel Brands acquired five players over the summer but only one of them cost a transfer fee.

That happened to be Demarai Gray, someone who at just £1.7m is quickly becoming the bargain of the summer.

Although Everton parted ways with a measly sum to sign him, there were questions raised about whether he’d be consistent enough for the Toffees.

During his time with Leicester, the 25-year-old failed to live up to his true potential, scoring only 13 goals in 169 outings.

However, since signing for Everton, he looks like he’s finally discovering consistency and making himself a potent threat.

In eight outings for his new club, Gray has scored three goals and contributed a solitary assist.

At the age of 24, Maitland-Niles is also a player who is yet to really find himself. He wants to play in midfield but it’s at wing-back or full-back where he’s played more prominently for both club and country.

His attitude has been a continued problem for Mikel Arteta in north London but the £14.4m-rated gem might just need a new home.

Described as a “Rolls-Royce” by Martin Keown, the Gunners academy graduate caught the eye while on loan at West Brom last term.

A permanent move to Everton, therefore, could help him to build confidence and start producing game-changing performances on a more regular basis.

Merseyside has helped Gray realise his potential and it’s even helped Andros Townsend find the net on a regular basis.

Benitez is working miracles at Goodison right now; Maitland-Niles must join the party.

Westwood named as Warwickshire's captain

Darren Maddy has stepped down as Warwickshire’s captain and the club have appointed Ian Westwood as his replacement.Maddy, who led Warwickshire to promotion in the Championship in 2008 – his second year in charge – said that he felt he had taken the club as far as he could.”I feel that I am leaving the team and the club in a stronger position than when I took over,” he said. “It has been fantastic to lead such a big club but all good things have to come to an end and I believe now is an appropriate time to hand over the reins. I know Ian is keen to maintain the good progress that the team has shown in the last 12 months.”Maddy was one of four England players to have been involved in the first season of the unofficial Indian Cricket League in 2007, and though he did not return for the recently concluded second season in 2008, Warwickshire’s director of cricket, Ashley Giles, denied that his involvement had been a contributory factor.”I can honestly say we’ve not considered that,” Giles told Cricinfo. “We both spoke about his decision, but he felt he had fallen into the role when [Heath] Streak left the club, and he believed now was the right time to pass the job onto someone else. Mads did a fantastic job for us for two years, and he still has a massive amount to offer the club.”Now the spotlight falls onto Westwood, 26, who endured a mixed 2008 in the Championship – 506 runs at 29.76 – but Giles was confident of the club’s decision to appoint a relatively young skipper.”Ian fulfils all the criteria you look for in a captain,” Giles told . “When he took over while Darren was injured, Ian responded in just the right way in terms of his personal performances and the team played well under him.”He is tactically very astute. It is great to have a captain who is a top bloke and a hard worker, both of which Ian is, but that extra dimension you need is the tactical one. Ian has that strand.”Westwood was understandably delighted with the news. “It is a great honour to be given this opportunity and I am thoroughly excited about the prospect,” he told the club’s website. “I had a taste of the captaincy when Darren was injured last year and am delighted to have been asked to take the role on full-time.”Under Darren the team has made real strides and it is a great time to be taking over. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead and leading Warwickshire to further success.”

"Very soon": Romano drops Arsenal claim

Arsenal are closing in on two more signings, according to emerging reports…

What’s the word?

According to renowned Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners are close to sealing a double swoop for Real Madrid midfielder Martin Odegaard and Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

“Martin Ødegaard will sign his contract as new Arsenal player today. The agreement will be until June 2026 [option included] – Real Madrid are also preparing their official statement,” he tweeted on Thursday.

“Aaron Ramsdale deal between Arsenal and Sheffield Utd will be also completed ‘very soon’.”

Two more incoming

Mikel Arteta and his side got the new Premier League season off to the worst possible start as they were defeated by newly-promoted Brentford away from home last Friday.

But now nearly a week on, there is some positive news that should give hope to much of the Emirates Stadium faithful, especially with huge games to come against Chelsea on Sunday and Manchester City in the early kick-off next weekend.

In Odegaard, the young Spanish boss will be getting a little fix to his creativity problems.

Arsenal failed to score against the Bees, albeit in the absence of striker trio Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah, but only four of their 19 key chances came from the engine room, via WhoScored.

During a successful loan spell last season, the Norweigan playmaker ranked first for key passes per 90 minutes (2.1) in the current squad, so it’s a welcome boost to see him return, in what is expected to be a £34m deal. That should give fans some much-needed encouragement.

They should also be delighted by the fact that they aren’t paying as much as first reported for Ramsdale, who ticks two huge boxes for the club.

Firstly, he’s a homegrown talent, which will help Arteta meet the registration quota, whilst he will also rival Bernd Leno for the no.1 spot – something that has been lacking since the exit of Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa.

The 23-year-old shot-stopper is likely to cost just £24m upfront, rather than the Blades’ initial £40m asking price. Whilst he may have two relegations on his CV, he’s a necessary addition this month.

Overall, this latest and major development from Romano should have many supporters absolutely buzzing.

Southampton linked with Takumi Minamino

Southampton are being linked with a loan move for Liverpool’s Takumi Minamino ahead of the new season, but it could prove to be a disastrous decision to bring him back to the south coast.

What’s the word?

According to talkSPORT, Ralph Hasenhuttl is keen on reuniting with the Japan international next season after he spent the second half of the 2020/21 campaign on loan at St Mary’s, and the Saints have reportedly made enquiries about his availability.

Last season saw the former RB Salzburg man feature 10 times in the Premier League for Southampton, contributing just two goals and no assists and averaging a disappointing 6.42 rating from WhoScored.

Premier League rules dictate that top-flight clubs are allowed two loans per season, and after Armando Broja joined on loan from Chelsea earlier this week, Minamino would be taking up the final spot if he were to return, which would be a waste when you consider the options Hasenhuttl already has in that position.

Would Minamino be a good signing?

Stuart Armstrong, Nathan Redmond and Moussa Djenepo are all likely to feature heavily out wide this season, whilst Mohammed Elyounoussi has also returned from Celtic, which would leave little room for Minamino in Hasenhuttl’s side.

The 26-year-old could also stunt the development of Nathan Tella, who looks set for regular football in 2021/22 after impressing in recent months, so it would make very little sense to bring in Minamino this summer.

Although the £10.8m-rated Japanese winger was described as a “machine” by Jurgen Klopp early last season, he didn’t show that during his time at Southampton and struggled to have much impact going forward, so there is little to suggest that he would be a success in Hasenhuttl’s side if he were to return to the Saints.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

Therefore, Martin Semmens should definitely avoid bringing Minamino back to St Mary’s this summer, as it makes very little sense to sign him considering the wide options already available in Hasenhuttl’s squad.

Crystal Palace want Amad Diallo on loan

Crystal Palace have enquired over the availability of Manchester United winger Amad Diallo as new manager Patrick Vieira looks to add further reinforcements to his first-team squad.

What’s the story?

According to well-known journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Eagles are one of several sides interested in taking the highly-rated 19-year-old on loan this summer.

He tweeted: “Amad Diallo is expected to leave Manchester United on loan this summer. FC Basel and Crystal Palace have been asking for Amad on loan until 2022. #MUFC @MatteMoretto

“Also Bundesliga & other Premier League clubs in the race. No decision has been made yet.”

Patrick Vieira would love him

The teenager joined United in a whopping £37.2m move last January after making just five appearances for boyhood club Atalanta.

Diallo only made his debut for Gian Piero Gasperini’s charge in October 2019, becoming the youngest player – at 17 years and 109 days old – to score on his Serie A debut in a 7-1 thrashing of Udinese.

Despite his limited action on the pitch, the Ivory Coast international caught the eye of his former teammates in training, with ex-Atalanta captain Papu Gomez likening him to six-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi.

“There are defenders in the first team that sometimes cannot stop him. To stop him in training, we have to kick him! He plays like Messi,” said Gomez (as relayed by Sky Sports).

A move to Old Trafford followed soon after, and United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made no attempt to hide his delight at securing the youngster’s services.

“As a club, we have followed Amad for a number of years, and having watched him myself, I believe he is one of the most exciting young prospects in the game,” revealed the Norwegian tactician.

However, the arrival of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund has forced Diallo further down the pecking order of the 20-time English champions, and a temporary move away could be the best option for his future development.

The Eagles are currently in the midst of an extensive overhaul of their first-team squad, and Vieira has previously targeted talented young stars, meaning the ex-Nice boss would surely love to see Diallo arrive at Selhurst Park.

After Andros Townsend’s departure, the capital club are light on numbers on the right-hand side, and Diallo could be the ideal signing to replace the pacey winger.

Spanish expert drops Saul Niguez to Manchester City verdict

Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez is a wanted man this summer with a number of clubs including Manchester City interested in his signature, and Spanish football expert Euan McTear has dropped his verdict on the situation.

Niguez has reportedly been offered to the Premier League champions in exchange for Bernardo Silva, and has five years left on his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium. Because of the length left on his contract, it could see Atletico demand a large fee for him.

The Spain international’s minutes in the red and white of Atletico diminished towards the end of last season, with Niguez not completing 90 minutes in La Liga since Atletico’s 5-0 thumping of SD Eibar in April.

With this in mind, McTear said: “It makes a lot more sense [a move to City]. He’s not the starter he was in previous years and I think Atletico know he’s one of those players who they can move on”.

Niguez has played in a number of different positions throughout his career, including both centrally and off the wing, and could be an ideal fit for Manchester City and manager Pep Guardiola, who once labelled Saul as a “fantastic player”.

The champions look set to bolster their squad this summer as they go in search of back-to-back Premier League titles, and with Bernardo Silva possibly wanting to leave the club according to The Athletic, Niguez could be the perfect replacement for him.

Competition is hotting up for the signing of Niguez, with Euan McTear saying: “He’s been linked with almost everywhere.

“He’s been linked with teams in Italy, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and now City”.

So, if the Cityzens want to capture his signature they may have to move quickly and beat off the competition.
