Fleming picks up more captaincy milestones

New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming achieved another captaincy career milestone with the series victory over the West Indies today when becoming this country’s most successful Test captain away from home.It was only New Zealand’s eighth series victory, from 52 attempts, away from New Zealand’s shores, and Fleming has achieved three of them.He led New Zealand to victory in England in 1999, Zimbabwe in 2000/01 and now the West Indies.Jeremy Coney won two series away from home in Australia (1985/85) and England (1986). Graham Dowling (Pakistan, 1969/70), Geoff Howarth (Sri Lanka, 1983/84) and Martin Crowe (Zimbabwe, 1992/93) were the other away-winning captains.Only India and South Africa remain on the countries in which New Zealand has not won a series, although both countries have featured in drawn series on their home soil with New Zealand. The sequence of away victories, and the attempts to win the first series, is: Pakistan (1969/70- third attempt), Sri Lanka (1983/84 – first), Australia (1985/86 – third), England (1986 – 10th), Zimbabwe (1992/93 – first), West Indies (2001/02 – fourth).Scott Styris’ achievement of a century and a half-century on debut had previously been achieved by just two other New Zealand batsmen, Rodney Redmond against Pakistan in 1972/73 and Lou Vincent in December last year in Australia.Styris’ tally of 176 runs for the match was the second highest by a New Zealand batsman on debut after Mathew Sinclair’s 214, also against the West Indies in 1999/00.The West Indies failed to win a Test match in a home series for the first time in 27 series and in their Test history had only failed to win a Test in a series on seven occasions. They have now been denied twice by New Zealand, along with two times by Australia and England and once by India.Mark Richardson may have found a new ally at the top of the order in Vincent. In eight opening partnerships, Richardson and Vincent have scored 318 runs at an average of 39.75. They shared stands of 61 and 117 in Grenada, the second innings effort surpassing their previous best partnership of 77 scored in the second innings against Australia at last year Perth, the first match they batted together. In all the occasions they have batted together they have scored 563 runs at 43.40, with their highest being 119 for the second wicket against England in the second Test at Wellington this year. This goes some way towards matching the formidable partnership formed by Richardson and Matthew Bell last season. They scored 524 runs in eight innings together at an average of 65.50 before Bell was dropped in favour of Vincent for the Perth Test.

Pundit says set-pieces are why Aston Villa want James Ward-Prowse

Aston Villa journalist Luke Hatfield, from The Express and Star, has told Football FanCast that James Ward-Prowse’s set-pieces are the main reason he’s on Villa’s radar.

According to the Guardian, Dean Smith’s side are set to make a move for the Southampton captain this summer as they look to improve their midfield department.

Villa have already added highly-rated Norwich attacking midfielder Emiliano Buendia and are now in the market for Ward-Prowse, who surely caught Smith’s eye when he scored two spectacular free-kicks in the Saints’ thrilling victory at Villa Park last November.

In total, he managed four goals from direct free-kicks last season and was the only player in the Premier League to manage more than one from a dead bull situation.

Ward-Prowse, who’s previously been compared to specialist David Beckham due to his incredible quality from set-pieces, also has a bunch of assists to his name, and contributed to 15 goals in the league last season as he was ever-present for the second campaign on the bounce.

Hatfield spoke to Football FanCast, and said:

“I think the big thing is his set piece quality. Villa have lost a little bit in terms of set-piece delivery and quality having seen Conor Hourihane fade out of the side. James Ward-Prowse is one of the best set-piece takers, probably in world football right now.

“Villa saw that first-hand at Villa Park and he whipped in two top class free-kicks.

“Villa are looking at the fact they’ve got Jack Grealish, Emi Buendia and John McGinn, who win fouls in dangerous areas, but they haven’t got someone who can really whip in a good delivery or plant one into the top corner and he obviously suits that.”

Everton transfer update on Nunes

Many Everton fans have been left to laud a transfer update involving Matheus Nunes.

As per Record, the Brazilian is very close to signing for the Goodison Park faithful, and is set to join the Merseyside club in the coming days along with Nuno Espirito Santo.

Playing in no fewer than in 31 Liga NOS matches in the 2020/21 season, scoring three goals and making a further two assists (Transfermarkt), Nunes was a key player in Sporting Lisbon’s title triumph, and his winning mentality would be a valuable asset to have both off of the pitch as well as on it.

At just 22 years of age as well, he certainly has a lot of potential, and would give the Toffees another handy option in the centre of midfield.

Ganguly: I was getting frustrated at number six

He was dropped from the Guyana Test on India’s last tour of the West Indies in 1996-97

Special Correspondent11-Apr-2002He was dropped from the Guyana Test on India’s last tour of the West Indies in 1996-97. This time around he will walk out to toss with Carl Hooper on the very same ground. For Sourav Ganguly, the captain of the Indian team, that is a great feeling. And, “by the grace of God,” as he puts it, he has always come back stronger at the places where he was dropped earlier. Remember Toronto? He earned four consecutive Man of the Match awards in his second Sahara Cup after being dropped for a couple of matches in the first one.But this is a different ball game altogether, and he will have to best the average Caribbean bowling attack to ensure a good first-innings total for the team, coming in at number three. With one more Test victory, he will be the most successful Indian captain on foreign soil. At the moment he has three victories, the same as MAK Pataudi, Bishen Singh Bedi and Sunil Gavaskar. This is his and his team’s best opportunity to do so. Twenty-four hours before the first Test, he chatted exclusively with our correspondent:Do you remember being dropped from the Guyana Test in 1997?Of course, yes. I can never forget that. It keeps pinching me every time I look back at the previous tour. Believe me, it will be a great feeling when I’ll be going out with Carl Hooper to toss the coin for the first time. It is a coincidence, but a wonderful one, I must admit.Do you think your team is capable of winning a test series in the Caribbean?Definitely. Ours is a much stronger team than the team touring here in 1997, especially in the bowling department. We have two of the finest spinners of modern-day cricket, and Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan are operating in tandem with the new ball. It is quite a balanced attack and capable of taking 20 wickets to win us a Test match. In 1997, Sri [Srinath] was not there, neither was Harbhajan. So we are hopeful. But will Harbhajan play in the first Test?I hope so, if he is fully fit to play. I don’t want to aggravate the injury by picking him when he is not fully fit to take the strains of five days of cricket. It is up to our physio to take the final decision tomorrow morning. It seems that you are destined not to play the full team you desire abroad. Anil Kumble played under you first in the South African tour, Sachin Tendulkar and Srinath were missing from the Sri Lankan tour…What can I do about it? It really hurts. But at the same time, you must not forget that we are playing throughout the year, and anybody can pick injuries. We should be prepared for that. But there are some positions you just cannot fill up. Bhajji [Harbhajan] was an integral part of our planning. If he misses the Test, we will have to change our strategy. Then will you be playing with three seamers and Kumble? That is yet not finalised. At the moment we are not ruling out the possibility of playing Bhajji at Guyana. If he is not available, then of course we will have to think otherwise. Will India continue with Deep Dasgupta at the top of the order? Why not? He is averaging nearly 40 in Tests as an opener, and that is enough for the team management to allow him one more chance. He deserves it. I know he was not tidy behind the stumps in the recently concluded series. But keeping to Anil [Kumble] and Bhajji on Indian wickets is always tougher for a newcomer. I hope he will keep better here. And you cannot drop a performing opener who showed tremendous guts in South Africa. You had said that Rahul Dravid would get back his number three spot after the Delhi Test. Will that be true, or you will continue at that position?I think I will continue. We need Rahul to play the second new ball at the bottom of the innings. And personally I was getting frustrated waiting so long to bat in Tests, especially after opening the innings in one-dayers. My vice-captain has faith in me to allow me one or two more opportunities. You did not come here with the team. A section of the media was not at all happy at that. Your reactions?I simply fail to understand why there is such a furore about it. If your wife is ailing, isn’t it your duty to be beside her bed for as much time as you can? I just did that and came here right before the tour-opener. Not only that, I did play in that match too. Yes, I didn’t come with the team, but there were some unavoidable reasons, and I took the permission of the Board president. That is enough, I suppose. But what about playing so slowly in the limited over match following the first class match here?We were trying to spend as much time at the wicket as possible. There was only one preparatory match before the first Test. The batsmen wanted to have a feel of the wickets here. That is why they played so slowly. It was in the interest of the team.

Lanzini may miss West Ham’s final two games

Manuel Lanzini is expected to miss West Ham’s final two games of the 2020/21 campaign, handing David Moyes yet another crushing injury blow…

What’s the latest?

The 28-year-old midfielder hobbled off right before half-time during the Irons’ 1-0 defeat to Everton a little over a week ago and did not feature in their draw to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday evening.

After the match, Moyes revealed that the Argentine may have reaggravated a previous thigh or groin problem, though he did not put a time frame on his recovery.

Now a further update has emerged, with the ever-reliable ExWHUemployee tweeting out fresh information to supporters on Twitter earlier this week.

He claimed that Lanzini would be out for “the rest of the season” in response to a question on his current situation.

Another injury setback

West Ham have stunned many, going from surviving relegation last season to the cusp of qualifying for Europe but that achievement has been all that more outstanding considering the thin squad at Moyes’ disposal.

The 58-year-old has suffered recurring injuries all campaign, with it seemingly getting worse since the turn of the year.

Just recently, the Hammers manager has had the likes of Michail Antonio, Aaron Cresswell, Declan Rice, Mark Noble, Angelo Ogbonna and Arthur Masuaku missing from the squad.

Lanzini is far from a regular option like the aforementioned sextet of players but he had covered for both Rice and Noble to great effect in the win over Burnley a few weeks ago.

He may have only started five Premier League outings, playing a total of 24 games in all competitions, but the £9m-rated dynamo is a fine player on his day and his qualities could well be required in their biggest two games in recent times.

The Irons have to win against West Brom on Wednesday and follow that up with another three points against Southampton on the final day to even stand a chance of making Europe.

At one stage, they looked certain for a shock Champions League berth but these recent injuries have taken their toll immensely, leaving Moyes’ squad with three defeats and one draw from their last five outings.

Without Lanzini, the Irons boss is once again left short on options and that’s far from ideal heading into a crucial fixture. He’ll be gutted as it’s another massive blow to their chances of picking up a result.
