IPL asks Manohar to look at IMG issue

The Indian board has taken the first step towards resolving the IMG dispute and authorised Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president, to look into the issue and report back to the board during its annual general meeting later this month. This was revealed by Rajiv Shukla, a vice-president of the BCCI, after a meeting of the IPL governing council, which formalised the move on Wednesday.”BCCI chief Shashank Manohar has been authorised to deal with the IMG issue and report to the board at its AGM on September 24,” Shukla said.A BCCI official told Cricinfo that Sharad Pawar, the former BCCI president who still has a strong hold on Indian cricket affairs, met Manohar and Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, on Tuesday night and discussed a course of action that would possibly involve fresh negotiations with the sports management firm and a revised contract.IMG worked for the IPL this year on an annual fee of around Rs33 crore (around US$6.7m). “Ideally, the board is hoping that they can renegotiate this down around Rs 25-27 crore (around US$5.5m),” the official said. “The idea is to work out a solution that will keep IMG onboard and at the same time, is not seen as undermining the BCCI secretary’s authority in any manner.”N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, had informed IMG last Saturday that the board would no longer use their services for conducting the IPL, following a disagreement over payments for the league’s second season in South Africa. Srinivasan claimed that the fee was disproportionate to the services rendered. IMG played a key role in setting up the inaugural IPL in 2008, for which the BCCI claimed to have made a payment of Rs42.92 crore (US$ 9.54 million approx), and it also managed the second IPL that was shifted to South Africa. The IPL franchises, who were informed about the decision only on Saturday morning through a separate email sent by league officials, were understandably concerned by the move. Seven out of the eight IPL franchises – except Chennai, which is owned by Srinivasan – have over the last three days written strongly-worded letters to the BCCI and Sharad Pawar questioning the IMG ouster, which they claimed would devalue and dilute the league.Pawar had also written to Manohar in his capacity as president of the Mumbai Cricket Association, questioning the Indian board’s decision to terminate IMG’s services for the IPL and warned that the unilateral move would put the board and its stakeholders’ investments in jeopardy.Similar concerns have also been echoed by Sony, the IPL’s broadcasters, which said in a separate letter that the timing of the decision was awkward for them and would have far-reaching implications on the next season.

Liverpool learn potential Bremer fee

After previous reports revealed that Liverpool have an interest in signing Torino centre-back Gleison Bremer, it seems as though the Merseyside club could be getting their hands on the defender for a fairly low price in the near future.

What’s the latest?

It has recently been reported by Italian media outlet Calciomercato (via Sport Witness) that Bremer could be available to sign for a fee of around €8-10m (£6.7m-£8.4m).

Since joining Torino back in the 2018 summer transfer window from Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro, the 24-year-old, who is currently valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, has made 86 appearances for the Serie A club across all competitions. In that time, he has scored 11 goals and provided four assists, which is a decent return for a defender.

So far this season, Bremer has played in all but one of Torino’s Serie A games, showing how important he is to their side. Furthermore, the Brazilian has racked up an average of 3.9 interceptions and 3.2 clearances per game in the league so far this season, proving himself a vital defensive unit for the club.

His latest appearance saw him make three clearances, seven interceptions and two tackles in Torino’s recent 1-0 defeat against AC Milan, ultimately earning himself an overall match rating of 7/10. That made him their highest-rated defender on the day according to SofaScore as he showcased his defensive talents.

Taking all this into account, we feel that a potential transfer swoop for the defender is something that Liverpool should definitely be considering, especially if they can get him for the fairly low price range being mentioned in this latest report.

Potential Van Dijk partnership?

If Bremer were to move to Anfield, we feel that he could have a very exciting partnership with current Reds defender Virgil van Dijk, who proven himself to be an attacking threat from the defence in the same way Bremer has at Torino, with 13 goals and seven assists under his belt at Liverpool.

Also, with Van Dijk signing a new contract extension at Anfield over the summer, we feel that if Bremer plays with the Dutchman, he could probably learn a lot from the 30-year-old and develop his own game based on how much playing experience Van Dijk has, making him a potential dream signing for the Reds if they pull it off.

West Ham: Moyes must unleash Dawson vs Genk

West Ham United return to Europa League action as they welcome Genk to the London Stadium this evening.

David Moyes and his side will be looking to keep up their 100% win record in Group H and they will be buoyed with confidence from the weekend’s narrow but convincing 1-0 victory over Everton.

The Scotsman will surely be tempted to rotate his starting XI, as he often has done in this competition, especially with the small matter of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

One player who is surely in line to start is Craig Dawson, who has a pretty remarkable record when playing for the club, notching a 63.5% win rate. He played from the off in the 2-0 win over Rapid Wien but not against Dinamo Zagreb.

His involvement could hand a rest to either Angelo Ogbonna or Kurt Zouma ahead of this weekend’s London derby, and as evident above, he can definitely be relied upon.

In fact, the Hammers’ only two losses this season have come when he has not played any involvement whatsoever.

The 6 foot 2 colossus has been described as a “leader” by former Hammer defender Anton Ferdinand, so the presence of the Italian beast will not be completely missed and whoever partners him, likely to be Issa Diop, will be in safe hands too.

Furthermore, Genk’s major weakness is from set-pieces, where they have already leaked a whopping ten goals, so the presence of Dawson could terrify them in east London tonight.

“In Belgium, they dominated the games that they lost. But they missed too many chances and conceded too many easy goals. Already ten from set pieces, especially against West Ham that can become a big problem,” explained journalist Marnik Geukens to football.london.

Dawson is a massive threat from set-pieces, so it would be wise for Moyes to start him tonight.

“I enjoyed working with Dawson and he’s the best attacker of set pieces that I’ve ever come across in my managerial career,” once claimed former Irons boss Alan Pardew.

The £42.5k-per-week star must be unleashed at the London Stadium this evening.

Everton vs Aston Villa k/o time changed

Lots of Everton fans have been left raging as some news emerged on one of their fixtures in January.

As per the official website of the Merseyside club, their meeting in the Premier League with Aston Villa at Goodison Park, which was originally scheduled to kick off at 3pm, will now be played at 12:30pm so that it can be televised on BT Sport.

It means those Blues planning to travel to the ground may find it more difficult to now with an earlier kick-off, and it is not the first time this season that their fixtures have been changed.

This of course continues the worrying trend of TV deals dictating when fixtures take place regardless of what travel disruptions and difficulties it causes for fans – plenty of Toffees reacting on social media just want to see a Saturday 3pm kick-off.

'It has been a long time coming' – McCullum

It’s funny what runs on board can do. It may not have been comprehensive, but there was a reversal of roles here in Napier. It was India who dropped on to the defensive too early, spilled the catches and struggled to stay alert.Jesse Ryder continued to bat like a dream, Brendon McCullum plundered when India were down, and Daniel Vettori put on aggressive fields and snuck out crucial wickets at the end of the day. Vettori the bowler and Vettori the captain were completely different from what we witnessed in Hamilton. He brought himself on first-change in the ninth over. After a characteristic charge from Virender Sehwag, who hit him for a six first ball, Vettori bowled the next one slower. Sehwag was late into the shot, but was also drawn into it. And when another move worked for Vettori, with Jeetan Patel getting Gautam Gambhir in his first over, New Zealand were on an all-out attack for the first time on this tour.Never before on this tour had their batsmen delivered so dominantly. Vettori has been quite a stranger to this feeling. This is only the third time New Zealand have scored 600 in their history but, more importantly, only the third time they have gone past 400 in 18 matches under his captaincy. After a remarkable comeback from 23 for 3 on the first day, they ground out India’s fielders today thanks to Ryder’s hunger and McCullum’s aggression. Ryder, in particular, went from strength to strength, getting his maiden double-hundred, and frustrated the bowlers with a chanceless innings, as opposed to Ross Taylor’s chancy knock yesterday.”I can’t ask for anything more at this stage of my career,” Ryder, always a man of few words, said. “It has been quite sensational for me. Everything seems to be working for me.”For McCullum, though, not everything had been working. Even as he has continued maturing as a limited-overs batsman, his Test batting has had a lot of room for improvement. His only centuries have come against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, the last one in 2005. So, from a stage where he could have become an important middle-order batsman for New Zealand, he has found himself not being entrusted with a job higher than No. 7. He couldn’t have argued against that.”It has been so long between hundreds. There were some 90s and 80s in between. No disrespect to Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, but to get one against a top-quality side like India means a lot,” McCullum said.”It has been a long time coming. There was a bit of emotion there as well when I got to three figures. It has been far too long between centuries for my liking. It is nice as well to get it against a side as good as India. It was a good time to bat.”What will also please New Zealand is the timing of this combined effort from the three most exciting batsmen in the team: they were in danger of being completely outclassed in a home series. Three days ago, Vettori spoke about how the New Zealand public deserved to see the team fight, no matter if they win or lose. After first two days of the Napier Test, the public won’t be complaining.

Aston Villa: Fans slam ‘disgraceful’ FIFA Team of the Week

The first FIFA 22 Team of the Week emerged on Wednesday, which had a lot of Aston Villa fans talking on social media.

EA Sports release a 23-man squad each week, handing upgrades to players who have performed well the previous weekend.

Villa sealed an impressive 3-0 win over Everton last time out in the Premier League, with Leon Bailey and Matty Cash catching the eye.

Cash scored his first goal for the club to open the scoring, whereas Bailey was involved in Lucas Digne’s own goal before sealing the win with his first Villa strike.

Neither Villa man earned a place in the Team of the Week, though, with Chelsea’s Thiago Silva, Watford’s Ismaila Sarr, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Brentford’s Ivan Toney the inclusions from the Premier League.

Villa fans react

PCB brings in British expert to fix insurance problem

The PCB has, despite insurance cover, suffered huge losses from recent security-related incidents © AFP

PCB officials will be meeting a British insurance risk expert in an effort to maximise the returns on its insurance investments. The board has, despite insurance cover, suffered huge losses from recent security-related incidents and there is an official inquiry into an alleged insurance scam involving Australia’s postponed tour of Pakistan in February-March this year.Saleem Altaf, the PCB’s chief operating officer said the expert, David Boorman, will meet key board officials during his short visit, due to begin today. “It’s a free-of-cost exercise aimed at getting expert advice on how we can maximise our interests when it comes to insurance,” he told the .Boorman will meet with a team of PCB officials, and the board may later take important decisions on the basis of his advice. “We have to tackle the matter very seriously because of past losses,” said Altaf. “We are paying a premium of almost 60 million Pakistan rupees annually and getting nothing in return.””It’s an important issue for us after what happened in the past,” said Altaf, who had met Boorman during an official visit in Dubai.Altaf was referring to the situation surrounding Australia’s tour earlier this year. Mindful of the security climate, the board had insured Pakistan’s series under the Future Tours Programme – including Australia’s tour – for $7.4 million. However, after Australia’s tour was postponed, Nasim Ashraf, the then PCB chairman, said the board could not claim insurance money for the series since it was a postponement and not a cancellation. It was later alleged by some board officials that the whole insurance affair was a scam and there was no record of the insurance deal, following which the PCB ordered an independent inquiry. Ijaz Butt, Ashraf’s successor, has said the inquiry was underway and details would soon be made public. The PCB is facing a serious financial crunch and is looking at ways to minimise its expenses, after the Champions Trophy scheduled in October was also deferred by a year.
