West Ham fans erupt over Kral signing

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have been left excited by the club’s announcement of their deadline day capture of Czech Republic international Alex Kral (whufc.com).

The midfielder, who was linked with a move to east London very early in the transfer window, emerged back on West Ham’s radar during the very final stages.

Kral appeared for the Czechs at Euro 2020, playing four matches and recovering nine balls (uefa.com), but some sources believed his sub-par outings made David Moyes and co re-think signing him this summer (The Athletic).

The 23-year-old, however, seemingly never left West Ham’s thinking with the club managing to secure him in the final hours on transfer deadline day.

Kral joins the Hammers on a season-long loan deal with the option to make his move permanent.

Reliable sources, like The Evening Standard, believe West Ham can sign him indefinitely at the end of 2021/2022 for around £12 million, with £7 million in add-ons.

Left excited by this announcement, many Irons supporters flocked to Twitter and had their say – find all of their best responses to the club’s official account down below.

Record-breaking O'Brien leaves Kenya floundering

Ireland are in a dominant position after two days of their must-win Intercontinental Cup clash against Kenya. Kevin O’Brien crashed a superb 171 as Ireland compiled a massive 578 for 4, before reducing Kenya to a slippery 62 for 3

ScorecardIreland are in a dominant position after two days of their must-win Intercontinental Cup clash against Kenya. Kevin O’Brien crashed a superb 171 as Ireland compiled a massive 578 for 4, before reducing Kenya to a slippery 62 for 3. Kevin cracked a remarkable 12 sixes, the most by an Ireland batsman in one innings.Kenya managed three wickets yesterday, when Niall O’Brien cracked 135, but today they could only muster one. Niall’s younger brother Kevin, along with Andrew White, put on a record fifth-wicket partnership of 214, beating the 175 that Alec O’Riordan and Jim Harrison put on against Denmark at Dublin in June 1973. In doing so, they have put Ireland in a very strong position to reach the final. If Andre Botha’s departure for 109 was cause for Kenyan optimism, it was short lived. White and O’Brien piled on the runs, with O’Brien reaching his maiden first-class century. The pair remained unbeaten, with White not out on 92, when William Porterfield finally ended Kenya’s misery in the field on 578 for 4.Boyd Rankin broke through almost immediately, removing Alex Obanda for 7, as Ireland took advantage of a tired Kenya side. Seren Waters, the gifted 18-year-old batsman, immediately looked assured on his debut, stroking three fours, but was trapped in front by the economical Peter Connell for 18. Likewise, Rakep Patel fell lbw to Kyle McCallan’s offspinners. Once again, Kenya’s stalwart, Steve Tikolo, has it all to do if Kenya are to avoid defeat. At stumps, they trail by 516 runs.

Mackems dealt potential double injury blow

Sunderland have potentially been dealt a double injury blow ahead of their League One fixture on Tuesday night.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by the Sunderland Echo, both Corry Evans and Luke O’Nien are doubts for the trip to Burton Albion, with Lee Johnson set to make a call on whether or not he includes either of the duo in his matchday squad.

However, the report added that Evans is a major doubt for the clash, with the midfielder having been withdrawn in the second half of the MK Dons fixture as a result of a muscle injury.

Meanwhile, O’Nien appears to have a slightly better chance of featuring on Tuesday, with the right-back having missed Saturday’s 2-1 win due to illness.

Johnson will be worried

Johnson does have a number of options from which to choose in central midfield, with Dan Neil, Carl Winchester and Elliot Embleton all capable of operating in the position. However, the loss of club captain Evans would nevertheless come as a huge blow to the 40-year-old, as the former Blackburn Rovers man is a player who the Black Cats boss is eager to make a cornerstone of his Sunderland side this season.

O’Nien’s absence would more than likely cause Johnson a much bigger selection headache, as the 26-year-old is the only natural right-back in the Mackems’ squad.

The manager could potentially deploy one of Winchester, Tom Flanagan or Bailey Wright in the position, although the former will be needed in central midfield if Evans is not deemed fit enough to feature, while Flanagan and Wright will most likely be required at centre-back.

In any case, being without either player is sure to be a worrying blow for Johnson, especially as his side are facing a testing away trip to a Burton team who, along with Sunderland, are one of only four clubs with a 100% record in League One so far this season.

In other news: Johnson must unleash “immense” £2.25m-rated SAFC gem vs Burton, he’s a game-changer

New Zealand will host matches away from their home at Lincoln for the first time in five years when they take on Australia in the Rose Bowl in 2008-09. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has announced the fixtures for the five-match series, which will be held in the first two weeks of February 2009.The contest begins with matches at Cobham Oval in Whangaeri on February 1 and 3, followed by games at Hamilton’s Seddon Park on February 6 and 8, and concludes at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on February 12. Justin Vaughan, the chief executive of NZC, said the games would be the ideal preparation for New Zealand ahead of the World Cup the following month.”The opportunity to get the team around the country away from their base in Lincoln is great for the women’s game,” Vaughan said. “Holding matches at Cobham Oval will be great for cricket in Whangarei and Northland after that ground has undergone renewal.”The match at the Basin Reserve also allows a celebration of the 75-year anniversary of women’s cricket in the capital. Beating the world champions is always the benchmark and it will be an important to do that to start such an important year.”New Zealand’s past 15 home ODIs have all been held in Lincoln. Next year they will be competing for the World Twenty20 title at the tournament in England in June following the World Cup in Australia.”It will be great to get the team out around the country in a year which sees them contending for two world titles,” the coach Gary Stead said. “To reclaim the Rose Bowl from the Southern Stars ahead of the World Cup and World Twenty20 will be a boost for the team.”

Mendis spins Sri Lanka to title triumph

Sanath Jayasuriya smashed another superb century before Ajantha Mendis, the mystery spinner still classed as a slow-medium bowler, bamboozled a highly rated batting line-up to finish with astonishing figures of 6 for 13

Eight years ago, in Sharjah, Sanath Jayasuriya scored a magnificent 189 before Sri Lanka’s bowlers sent India tumbling to 54 all out, and a humiliating 245-run defeat. At Karachi’s National Stadium, Jayasuriya, now39, smashed another superb century before Ajantha Mendis, the mysteryspinner still classed as a slow-medium bowler, bamboozled a highly ratedbatting line-up to finish with astonishing figures of 6 for 13.Virender Sehwag’s blistering early onslaught was rendered irrelevant as Sri Lankastormed to a 100-run victory, retaining the Asia Cup and extending India’smiserable record in tournament finals. With Sehwag hammering an exhilarating 60 from just 35 balls, India hadromped to 76 from just nine overs. Muttiah Muralitharan prefers not tobowl during the Powerplays, and it was to Mendis, who the Indians hadnever faced before, that Mahela Jayawardene turned as he sought to staunchthe flow of runs.Even he couldn’t have predicted the impact that Mendis would have. Like acombine harvester scything through a field of corn, Mendis sliced througha line-up that has quite a reputation when it comes to playing spin.Sehwag charged his second delivery and watched helplessly as it driftedaway from him. Kumar Sangakkara did the rest. Two balls later, YuvrajSingh was utterly befuddled by one that skidded on. Suddenly, 274 appeareda long way away. That Sri Lanka got anywhere near that was down to a man who refuses to bowto Father Time. India picked up four wickets in the first 12 overs, withIshant claiming three of them, but Jayasuriya’s 114-ball 125, and a131-run partnership with Tillakaratne Dilshan utterly changed thecomplexion of the game. It’s perhaps no coincidence that India haven’t won the Asia Cup sinceJayasuriya became a regular at the top of the Sri Lankan order, and hismastery over the opposition was best revealed in the 16th over, bowled byRP Singh. RP had managed to escape relatively unscathed in his opening spell, conceding 24 from five overs, but when he returned, Jayasuriya took to himlike a bull that had been riled by the matador’s cape.Sixes on either side of the sightscreen were followed by two wallops overcover, and after a one-ball lull, he pulled one over midwicket for sixmore. With Dilshan then taking three successive fours off Irfan Pathan, MahendraSingh Dhoni had no option but to turn to spin, with Pragyan Ojha andSehwag managing to have something of a fire-extinguishing effect.India had started poorly, with RP conceding two boundaries to fine leg inthe opening over, but a mix-up between two experienced hands gave them theopening they so desperately needed. Jayasuriya tapped one to shortmid-off, and Sangakkara had already hared halfway down the pitch before herealised the striker had no interest in a single. Suresh Raina’sunderarm flick was the ultimate punishment.
Ajantha Mendis got a career-best 6 for 13 © AFP
But with two maiden overs bowled in the first five, India wrested back ameasure of control, despite Jayasuriya’s sporadic bursts of aggression. With the pressure building, it was Ishant who struck, as Jayawardeneslapped one straight to Rohit at point. No bother for Jayasuriya though. Aswivel pull sent an Ishant delivery for six, and Pathan’s introduction wasgreeted with three fours in the over. The problem was at the other end, where Ishant was wreaking havoc with theextra bounce he extracted from a comatose pitch. Bounce and a hint oflateral movement had Chamara Kapugedera playing one off the leading edgeto point, and two balls later, the other Chamara – Silva – inside-edgedone back on to the stumps.Jayasuriya’s version of consolidation involved a pull for six off Ishantand a slice of luck as a as a miscue off Pathan evaded RP, who ran aroundin circles and failed to get his hands to the ball. Dilshan contributedonly four to the first 50 the pair added, from 30 balls, but he didhis part, turning the strike over to allow Jayasuriya to inflict maximumdamage. With Sehwag and Ojha – Rohit contributed three tidy overs too – taking thepace off the ball, it was a different story. With the field spread, theboundaries dried up and the runs came mainly in singles. India missed acouple of run-out opportunities and Dhoni put down a sharp chance offeredby Dilshan when he was on 37, but the helter-skelter pace of the Powerplayovers soon gave way to relative calm.Eventually, the lack of action got to Jayasuriya and a flat slog-sweep offSehwag only found Ishant at deep midwicket. After that, Sri Lanka losttheir way. Dilshan eased to 50 from 68 balls, but when Pathan returned tobowl round the wicket, he popped a catch to Dhoni. Vaas, back in the frayafter missing the last game, square-drove Ishant for the first four inmore than 20 overs, but was castled by RP soon after.Nuwan Kulasekara flailed the bat to finish with an unbeaten 29, but a target of274 was expected to be well within reach for an Indian side that hadincluded seven specialist batsmen. But after his extraordinary first over,Mendis soon set about making a mockery of the predictions.Raina had been fortunate to survive a vociferous leg-before shout beforehe decided to play the worst shot of the evening, an ugly pull to adelivery that pitched on middle stump. Rohit soon followed, struck on theback pad by one that deviated away a touch, and by the time Jayawardenedecided to take him out of the attack, Mendis had stunning figures of 4for 8.No one including the umpires knew quite what to expect, and the batsmenappeared unsure whether to play him as a slow bowler or a medium-pace one. That indecision was to prove fatal, especially against the carrom ballthat was being propelled by a flick of the middle finger. As eye-catchingwas his accuracy. There was no width for the batsmen to work with, andhardly a loose delivery. Only Dhoni, who played the ball as late as hepossibly could, showed any signs of coming to grips with him.
Sanath Jayasuriya is unstoppable even at 39 © AFP
With Mendis casting such a spell, Murali’s introduction went almostunnoticed, but with him in parsimonious mood, the tourniquet wastightening around India. Robin Uthappa and Dhoni added 38 in attritionalfashion before Murali struck from round the wicket. Uthappa missed aflick, and the appeal from the bowler was just a formality.Jayawardene waited a while longer and then brought back Mendis for the30th over. India somehow survived that, but the game was up in his next.Pathan’s attempt to flick through the leg side ended up at slip, andRP walked off bemused after one deviated away to take offstump. He should have had the hat-trick too, only Simon Taufel was asperplexed by a ball that pitched in line as Ojha was.Dhoni had watched it all from the other end, defending stoutly andstriking the odd four when he could. But once he inside-edged Chaminda Vaas to the keeper, the Sri Lankan dressing room readied for the celebrations. When Kulasekara cleaned up Ishant with 63 balls still to be bowled, they could begin in earnest. The combination of the six-hitting veteran and the six-wicket carrom-ball spinner had been far too much for India to handle.

Wolves transfer update on Ramsey

Many Wolves fans have been left reacting as a transfer update emerged on Aaron Ramsey.

As per football journalist Romeo Agresti (via Elvin DF), the Midlands club hold a ‘half-hearted’ interest in the Juventus ace, but the costs to sign him are currently ‘insurmountable’.

Ramsey signed a whopping £400,000-per-week deal to join the Old Lady from Arsenal back in 2019, and there is simply no way that the Molineux faithful can afford to pay him that kind of money.

Nonetheless, what a signing he would be if he were to cut some wages, given his experience in the Premier League, where he scored no fewer than 40 goals and made a further 51 assists in 262 games in total from midfield (Transfermarkt).

The 30-year-old would certainly give Bruno Lage another good option in the middle of the park, providing that they can negotiate his wages down and a minimal transfer fee.

Tame draw as Sri Lanka get much needed practice

Thanks to the rain, which washed out three sessions on the first two days, and a two-paced flat pitch, the match between Sri Lanka and a Rest of South Africa XI petered out into a tame draw at the Lenasia Cricket Stadium.Sri Lanka declared their first innings on 336 for five after good contributions from Mahela Jayawardene (76), Hashan Tillakaratne (79*) and Hasantha Fernando (57*). The South African bowlers had toiled long and hard, with Garnett Kruger (1/81) and Jon Kent (2/32) the pick. The South Africans replied with 392, thanks primarily to a fine 146 from Davey Jacobs. Dropped on 43, he was most aggressive against the bowling of Muttiah Muralitharan, taking 67 from the 60 balls he received from the wrist spinner, who finished with figures of 31-1-136-3.Ruchira Perera was most impressive among the rest of the bowlers, taking 2/65, with Fernando angling for his first Test call-up with 1/34.Sri Lanka started their second innings with less than a day to go. Having been restricted, due to the wet conditions in the Johannesburg area, to indoor nets, their batsmen enjoyed a welcome practice session.Russel Arnold, who had failed on three occasions, showed that time at thecrease might be the best remedy. His timing improved as his innings progressed, and he looked set for a hundred when he chased one outside the off to be caught behind for 98.Marvan Atapattu, also caught behind for 81, showed that he could be a thorn in South African flesh in the Test series. Seldom playing the ball in the air, he showed solid defence and played some classy cover drives in his 12 boundaries.Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara also made the most of the flat pitch. Both were uncharacteristically defensive, but after Sangakkara went to his fifty he unleashed a flurry of shots, including consecutive fours and a six off James Henderson. The moribund game was called off 30 minutes early with Sri Lanka 265/2, a lead of 209, with Sangakkara on 61. The Sri Lanka coach, Dav Whatmore, was pleased with his players’ performance, which sets them up well for the WanderersStadium on Friday.

Saints fans love McQueen news

Many Southampton fans are delighted after The Athletic revealed the Saints have given Sam McQueen a new six-month contract.

The Saints are preparing for the new season as they aim to improve on their disappointing 15th-placed finish in the Premier League last term. Ralph Hasenhuttl and co will hope to be busy in the transfer window and have already confirmed the signing of Romain Perraud from Brest in France (southamptonfc.com).

Rather than completing another new signing, though, the Saints have instead move to extend McQueen’s deal at the club. So far, he has made just 29 appearances for the south coast outfit (Transfermarkt), with a lengthy cruciate ligament rupture hindering his development. However, the Saints appear to have given the 26-year-old another chance to prove himself at St Mary’s.

The update was relayed on Twitter by @SaintsExtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from Southampton supporters who are glad that the club aren’t turning their back on the player. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on what one fan described as “encouraging” news.
