Nuno cost Wolves with Daniel Podence second-half withdrawal

Wolverhampton Wanderers were rocked by a late equaliser on Sunday afternoon as the Midlands outfit picked up their first draw of the 2020/21 season against Newcastle United.

Nuno Santo’s men took the lead ten minutes from time after Raul Jimenez rifled home a strike from the edge of the box, but an 89th-minute free-kick from Jacob Murphy, who squeezed the ball past Rui Patricio, earned a point for the visiting Magpies.

It was perhaps a harsh result considering the Wolf Pack dominated the match on their own turf, recording 67% possession and a total of 16 shots at goal, though if anyone’s to blame, it’s the Portuguese boss in the dugout.

He made a bold call to withdraw one of Wolves’ key attacking outlets in Daniel Podence just before the 70th minute and it was evidently felt.

The €22m (£20m) January signing was a constant nuisance, terrorising Newcastle’s goalscoring wing-back as well as Fabian Schar at right centre-back yet for some bizarre reason, he was the one to make way for Adama Traore over Pedro Neto.

Per SofaScore, the diminutive 5 foot 5 winger recorded five dribbles, three shots, two key passes and even won five duels up against the aforementioned duo.

BirminghamLive graded his display a 7/10 and said: “Wolves’ little winger was their most creative spark during a difficult first half against a Newcastle side who sat deep. Podence sent Murphy back to Newcastle with one rapid change of direction and skinned the same player again for a second time 30 seconds later.”

Podence was everywhere, forcing pressure on the Magpies’ backline with his electric energy and whilst, he wasn’t able to score himself, he clearly was coming close. One of his attempts at goal was expertly saved by Karl Darlow.

On the other side, Neto lost possession more (18 times), enjoyed fewer successful dribble attempts (three) and committed two silly fouls, also via SofaScore.

It remains to be seen if the home side would have scored another goal with Podence on the pitch but his presence certainly would’ve helped as he was evidently the main tormentor of the Magpies’ misery.

Fingers can be pointed at many players, but it’s Nuno’s call that’s cost them this weekend.

Leeds United have had interest in Norwich City striker Teemu Pukki

Leeds United are been quite active in the transfer market this summer as they prepare for the first Premier League campaign in over 16 years and it appears business isn’t complete just yet.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have won two from three and sit inside the top seven in the division, and now the Yorkshire giants have been linked with a move for one of last season’s relegated stars.

According to the Press Association’s Nick Mashiter, Leeds have been keen on signing Norwich City striker Teemu Pukki throughout the window, but the Finnish talisman is poised to remain at Carrow Road – at least until January.

The likes of Aston Villa, Wolves, West Brom and Sheffield United, who the Whites defeated earlier today have all also been courted with interest.

He would certainly be an interesting option to have alongside Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo, especially as he’s in the mould of a typical Bielsa striker.

Last season, Pukki bagged 11 goals and averaged 2.2 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

It’s the 30-year-old’s presence on the ground rather than the air (0.1 aerials won each match last season) that would have made him a decent prospect at Elland Road.

His Canaries teammate Marco Stiepermann has previously given him one huge endorsement by comparing him to Robert Lewandowski, he said: “He’s really a goal scorer and he’s doing fantastic. I played together with Robert Lewandowski, and I really have this feeling [Pukki] is much colder in the 18-yard box than Lewandowski. Of course, we don’t have to speak about [Lewandowski] because he is a world class player, but Teemu Pukki is special.”

Whilst his manager Daniel Farke has lauded his work rate, not only describing him the best striker in the Championship over 18 months ago, but also claiming that “His goals come at key moments but his workload for the team against the ball was outstanding.”

Bielsa got a taste of that himself in February 2019 when Pukki bagged during a 3-1 victory at Elland Road. The veteran absolutely bullied Pontus Jansson as the former Leeds man was dribbled past twice, lost possession nine times and won just seven of 15 duels, per SofaScore.

Transfermarkt value the Finland international at just £7.2m, so if United were to follow up with their interest, they could well land themselves quite the bargain. He’s tried and tested at this level after all.

Glagow Rangers: Kemar Roofe will have a scan to see how bad his injury is

Glasgow Rangers forward Kemar Roofe was missing for the club at the weekend as they drew against Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership. This was due to the fact that he had to be taken off in their Europa League qualifying match last week in the first half with an injury.

Supporters of the club are possibly questioning how long the striker will be on the sidelines for and manager Steven Gerrard has been discussing the severity of the injury.

Speaking to RangersTV following the 2-2 draw with Hibs, Gerrard was asked about Roofe’s injury and he said: “He’s been sent for a scan.

“We originally thought it might’ve been a bit of tightness in his calf, he thought it was tightness in his calf. On assessment, it was looking that way, but something’s showed up so he’s going to be missing in the short term.”

The 27 year-old, who the Scottish side signed for £4.5 million, per Transfermarkt, has had a decent start to life at the club, as he has scored two goals in six appearances (including two appearances from the bench).

With the Gers battling at the top of the division and hoping to beat Celtic to the title, Gerrard will be hoping that he can have his whole squad available. With Roofe having to go for a scan, the manager has Alfredo Morelos, Cedric Itten and Jermain Defoe as his available attackers. This would normally sound like he still has some depth, but Defoe has only recently returned from a hamstring injury so he is still battling to get match fit, and so it leaves the club with just two fully fit options.

The only positive to come from this news is the fact that Gerrard has said that he’s ‘going to be missing in the short term’ which should hopefully mean Roofe only misses a couple of games and not a large chunk of the season. For now though, all associated with the club will have to wait to find out exactly how long he will be out for.

Manchester United: Red Devils ready for spending spree as Solskjaer targets mass summer clear-out

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set for a summer clear-out after coming from behind to draw against West Ham at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer’s side moved up into third place, a point ahead of Leicester City, who they will face at the King Power Stadium at the weekend.

Michail Antonio opened the scoring after Paul Pogba blocked the ball with his hands in the penalty box, before Mason Greenwood levelled the score.

As James Ducker pointed out, Solskjaer did nothing, which shows what he really feels about his squad as the second half dragged on for what seemed like an eternity.

According to The Telegraph, the Red Devils are ready for a spending spree in the summer, as the Norwegian believes he needs five players to challenge for the Premier League next season.

Solskjaer has made four permanent signings so far, namely Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Bruno Fernandes, Daniel James and Harry Maguire, but he is not prepared to stop there.

The Telegraph claims the head coach and his assistant Mike Phelan have worked out what they need to compete for trophies once again.

Despite the fact he has made four signings in his first 12 months, Solskjaer wants a right winger, a centre forward, a centre midfielder, another centre-back and a left-back as well.

He privately feels a winger, defender and defensive midfielder are his top priorities for now, but will wait and see what the summer brings.

Ducker revealed Solskjaer has already decided to sell the deadwood to raise some much-needed funds, as he considers Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones surplus to requirements, among others.

While he remains determined to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho in the summer, he has serious problems at the other end of the pitch he urgently needs to address.

Victor Lindelof has never really looked convincing next to Harry Maguire, as he has received a low WhoScored rating so far, while the club captain has copped a fair amount of criticism for his performances since the Premier League restart.

The board may be reluctant to get rid of Maguire so soon after signing him from Leicester for a world-record fee for a defender, but he certainly needs a new partner to bring the best out of him.

Although they did not know it at the time, the Red Devils had a real chance to put some distance between them and Chelsea, as the Blues ended up dropping points against the champions, and they could live to regret their failure to beat the Hammers.

Missing out on Champions League football could have dire consequences for a deal for Sancho this summer, so there is so much at stake heading into the weekend.

Glasgow Rangers: Fans rage at club’s tweet about Castore kit launch

It is the day that many Glasgow Rangers fans have been waiting for – tomorrow, July 1, the club’s new home kit for the 2020/21 campaign will be revealed.

The shirts for the upcoming season will be made by Castore after the ‘Gers signed a new deal with the Liverpool-based company. It brings an end to their partnership with Hummel and this new contract is set to be worth a cool £25m over five years for the club.

It brings in a new era at Ibrox and this season will be a big one for Steven Gerrard as he looks to win his first piece of silverware with the 54-time Scottish champions – as such, everything building up to the new campaign will be under intense scrutiny from the Ibrox club’s supporters.

The Light Blues’ official Twitter account shared the news and it led to plenty of reaction from the fans – they didn’t seem too happy though, for a number reasons. Some are disappointed as they believe they have seen the kit already following a leak, whilst others have complained that the build-up to the release has been too long.

They have taken to the social media platform to share their thoughts and you can see some of the best comments below.

Tottenham Hotspur: Noel Whelan says Spurs ‘compete’ for transfer targets Joe Gelhardt and Jensen Weir

Tottenham are keen to take advantage of Wigan Athletic’s administration by planning a double swoop for Joe Gelhardt and Jensen Weir, according to recent reports.

The Sun claimed that Spurs are seeking to exploit the situation by making moves for the 18-year-old duo, and Noel Whelan believes that the Londonders will have to ‘compete’ with Celtic if they want to sign the teenagers in the summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker has backed the duo to leave the Latics. After being asked if the teenager will leave in the summer, Whelan said: “Gelhardt and Weir, because of the administration, are in a very good position to get a move away from Wigan at the end of the season.

“They are going to have to compete with Tottenham and some other clubs as well. These two young players are wanted by some of the top clubs in Britain.”

“The club need to take the shackles off and allow these two young players to go. They will get some money back which is needed to help that club survive.”

It is difficult to disagree with Whelan here, as Wigan’s financial woes have put them in a precarious position. The Latics confirmed last week that the club are in dire straits following administration, meaning that it will be hard for them to keep hold of some of their talent.

According to Football Insider, Celtic are also closely monitoring Gelhardt as his valuation is expected to plummet in the wake of the news about the Championship club. The striker has enjoyed a breakthrough season at the DW Stadium, scoring once in 18 games, which has put him on Tottenham’s radar.

Weir, who is the son of Everton legend David, is also wanted by Spurs, and Wigan administrators have confirmed they have received an official approach for the pair.

Mourinho is well aware that his budget has been limited in light of recent events and he will have to resort to sorting out swap deals, signing free agents and pursuing cheaper options this summer. Spurs will likely be eager to wrap up a deal as quickly as possible, amid interest from Celtic, Everton and Leicester.

Scouts are confident that Gelhardt can be groomed into a similar style to Harry Kane who is the club’s top scorer this season. However, the Lilywhites will have some convincing to do, as Troy Parrott has been marginalised for the majority of the campaign.

Whether or not they will be able to offer Gelhardt the game-time that he would like remains to be seen.

Como foi o jogo?

✍️ Texto: Leonardo Bessa

Aston Villa fans desperately want them to sign Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud

Having signed Wesley from Club Bruges for a club-record transfer fee, Aston Villa would no doubt have been hoping that he would come in and lead the line up top in their return to the Premier League.

Unfortunately for Dean Smith, the Brazilian hasn’t fired on all cylinders as of yet, and has seemingly struggled to adapt to the pace and intensity of English football. The 22-year-old has struck just four times, but it is certainly a big ask to want him to try and score the goals to keep them up this year.

And after watching Chelsea outcast Olivier Giroud net once again in international colours with France on Thursday night, Villa fans took to Twitter to urge the club to sign him.

Many supporters insisted the veteran would be the perfect signing for them, and that he would be able to mentor Wesley over the coming months.

Some fans insisted that due to his experience of playing in the Premier League, the 6 foot 4 man could come in and do a job for them straight away.

Check out some of the reaction of Villa fans below:

Leeds would be adding some vital depth if they signed Glen Kamara

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to reports from Football Insider, Leeds United are in the hunt to sign Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara.

The Finland international would provide Marcelo Bielsa’s team with an extra element if he were to join the Elland Road outfit.

What’s the story then?

The report states that the Whites would be looking to make this move in the summer rather than in January as they’re only looking to bring bodies in at the start of next year if any of their loan players are recalled.

The article also claims that the Scottish outfit value the midfielder at over £8m, which may prove to be a bit of a hurdle for the club, but if they do sign him he’ll give them some much-needed depth in the middle of the park.

Added depth

Leeds do have a number of midfield options, but injuries have continued to plague their squad.

Jamie Shackleton and Adam Forshaw have both missed portions of the season already, and that has meant that Stuart Dallas has had to play out of position in the middle of the park.

With Mateusz Klich also looking like he’s needed a rest in recent weeks, the addition of another midfielder could certainly be what United need, especially when that player is a Europa League regular – featuring seven times in qualifying and four times in this term’s group stages.

Simply put, it certainly wouldn’t hurt Leeds to bring in more midfield reinforcements due to the problematic number of injuries their current players are sustaining.

Robbie Gotts and Mateusz Bogusz are coming through the ranks but it’s difficult to assess whether they’d be up to the standard right away. Therefore, adding someone with senior experience could be invaluable.

That being said, £8m is a steep fee and there may be other areas of the squad that need addressing before they think of splashing that type of money on the 24-year-old.
