Duck dents Vaughan's comeback hopes

Only 31 overs were possible on the first day of Yorkshire’s clash with Sussex at Headingley, but that was long enough for Michael Vaughan’s hopes of an Ashes recall to take a further tumble. He was dismissed by Corey Collymore for a fourth-ball duck, moments after Jacques Rudolph had also been caught by Ollie Rayner off the same bowler, as Yorkshire struggled to 58 for 2 by the close. Collymore’s figures were an impressive 9-4-10-2, but Joe Sayers and Anthony McGrath had added 39 unbeaten runs for the third wicket. For a full report from the first day at Chester-le-Street, where Durham have taken control against Hampshire, click here for John Ward’s bulletin.

Murali Karthik and Gareth Berg each scored half-centuries to rescue Middlesex from an awkward 139 for 7 against Essex at Chelmsford. The pair added 99 for the eighth wicket to transform their team’s fortunes after David Masters and Chris Wright had placed Essex in the ascendancy. They shared nine of the ten wickets to fall in Middlesex’s innings, with Masters the pick with 5 for 65, but thanks to the efforts of Berg and Karthik it was the visitors who finished the day in command. With a handy total of 274 behind them, Middlesex reduced Essex to 54 for 4 at the close, with Steven Finn claiming 3 for 21.Bad weather meant that no play was possible in any of the other matches in either division.

Luckless Edwards remains philosophical

Fidel Edwards: ‘I always enjoy a good challenge, almost every ball he was playing shots, it was pretty good for him and pretty good for me too’ © AFP

Fidel Edwards might not be buying Jerome Taylor a drink any time soon. They are new-ball buddies, who have made England hop around at times in this series, but in this match Taylor has not done much to help his friend out. On the opening day he dropped a top-edge off Kevin Pietersen and on the second he shelled Ravi Bopara on 4.Edwards deserves a medal for the efforts he put in on a surface that is shaping up as another to make bowlers’ hearts bleed. The run-fest in Karachi has provoked a lot of debate about batsman-friendly surfaces and, for all the pre-match hype about pace and bounce, this pitch has plenty more runs to offer over the next three days.”It’s kind of tiring coming here,” a weary Edwards said. “I was hoping to get some grass and a good fast wicket to bowl on, given that in Antigua it was pretty flat. We were hoping to get some pace and we did not get it. It is one of those games where you have to be strong, keep bowling and hope for the best.”And that “best” doesn’t involve dropped catches. When Edwards finally snared Bopara 100 runs after the miss – ironically with the help of a third-time-lucky Taylor – he roared a celebration at Bopara, but the huddle with his team-mates was less enthusiastic. He won’t be framing his figures of 3 for 151, but they don’t even tell half the story because he also watched Andrew Strauss get put down by Chris Gayle before lunch yesterday.”Yes, it was frustrating, he went on from that to get a big hundred. He batted pretty well but it could have been a lot better for us,” he said. “It’s pretty hurtful but that is the way it goes. I don’t think the guys go out to drop catches, but you have to take the chances and sometimes they make you pay for them. Strauss was dropped [on 58] and went on to make a big score, Bopara as well, if we had taken the chances you never know how it might have turned out.”Edwards helped produce the most captivating passage of play as he gave Bopara a real working over. He hurled himself in from the Malcolm Marshall End and pitched more in his half of the pitch than the batsman’s. Bopara, for his part, was happy to play the hook which only enticed Edwards to keep banging the ball in.”I always enjoy a good challenge, almost every ball he was playing shots, it was pretty good for him and pretty good for me too.”Whereas England supporters cross their fingers whenever Andrew Flintoff runs in, hoping that his body holds together, the West Indies fans go through a similar process with Edwards. He has problems with his ankle and his back while his unorthodox action suggests he is an injury waiting to happen. However, in recent times he has improved his stamina. His pace remained impressive even during the latter stages of his spells, which included a nine-over burst during the morning. In the end, however, all his effort didn’t come to much as his team trooped off in final session, with another match-saving task ahead of them. They have already lost Gayle after he was given out lbw following a referral against James Anderson. He looked far from impressed as he dragged himself away from this featherbed. “I wasn’t near him when he came in the dressing room,” said a diplomatic Edwards. A few people might want to give Edwards a wide berth tonight as well.

Kalvin Phillips tipped to leave Leeds

Kalvin Phillips knows he will leave Leeds United for another club in the near future, according to former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie.

The Lowdown: Phillips continues to shine

The Whites may have made a poor start to the season, but Phillips has again been a key performer, shining in the middle of the park.

His status as a player has grown so much since his performances at Euro 2020 for England and he possesses an aura and respect in midfield now that only comes when you perform on a big stage like that.

The Latest: Midfielder tipped to leave

Leeds could find it extremely difficult to keep hold of the £36m-rated (Transfermarkt) Phillips in the long-term, and speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie, 61, claimed he would leave soon, with the offer of a new deal a way of Leeds protecting themselves:

“It’s a very sensible move. He could always run his contract down and no one wants that. He’s a Leeds boy and he knows he’s going to move.

“It’s a great idea. He had a cracking Euros and we all know how good he is. We know there is interest and when the time comes Leeds are protected a bit more now.”

The Verdict: Inevitable?

In an ideal world, Phillips would spend the rest of his career at Leeds, going on to potentially become one of the greatest servants in the club’s history.

The brutal truth is that the 25-year-old will be eyeing up playing Champions League football and winning big trophies, though – something the Whites may not be able to offer him.

Whether it’s next summer or beyond, Leeds may have to accept that life without Phillips isn’t too far away, and penning him to a new deal is certainly the best way to ensure the club wins a big profit if he does depart.

In other news, one Leeds player has signed a new deal. Find out who it is here.

Wolves may have their own Sanches already

This was a difficult summer for Wolverhampton Wanderers. They lost Nuno Santo early on due to a rift over recruitment and it’s probably just as well he left.

The Portuguese had been informed by Jeff Shi and co that he’d have to operate in a market that revolved around loan deals.

Bruno Lage, however, was keen to come to the Premier League and has worked duly with what he’s been given at Molineux.

Trincao arrived from Barcelona and South Korean speedster Hwang-hee Chan was also signed on a temporary basis from RB Leipzig.

Both players are eye-catching additions but beyond that, there was little to shout about in the market.

Wolves looked to complete deals on deadline day but ultimately fell short in their pursuits of Kieffer Moore, Sven Botman and Renato Sanches.

The Old Gold came into the final day of the window looking as though they’d sign the latter. They were in talks with Lille over landing the midfielder on a loan deal before paying to sign him next summer.

However, with the 23-year-old injured and a disagreement over the future fee, a deal fell through.

It was a gut-wrenching blow for the club who were keen to bring in one of the most promising central players in Europe.

Sanches’ previous spell in the Premier League with Swansea had been unsuccessful but he’s come on leaps and bounds since moving to French football.

He was involved in four goals throughout the league campaign and was tantalising with the ball at his feet.

The Portuguese dynamo recorded a pass success rate north of 85% and registered 1.7 dribbles per game.

Yet, they shouldn’t be too disheartened about missing out on Sanches. After all, Lage may already have Wolves’ very own Renato lying within their ranks.

That happens to be Chem Campbell, the new darling of the Wolves academy.

Of course, he’s not at the level that Sanches currently is but his future at Molineux and in the game, in general, is huge.

The 18-year-old was courted by Borussia Dortmund last year and was named in The Guardian’s 20-best players at Premier League clubs for 2019.

Writing in that piece, Paul Doyle said: “He is a skilful, direct dribbler with a knack for bursting forward from central midfield.”

That reminds us of Sanches, a skilful ball carrier who is capable of dragging his team up the pitch.

Campbell became the second-youngest player to feature for Wolves at senior level when he played in the Carabao Cup back in 2019/20.

He’s not played a first-team game since but has taken part in the EFL Trophy, gaining regular football against senior professionals.

The teenager is one of the most vibrant players in the academy and a glowing review from former U18 boss Steve Davis says a lot: “[He can] go as far as he wants in the game,” Davis began.

“He can produce things out of nothing.

“Defensively he’s got work to do in terms of his responsibilities but with the ball he can create things just with his skill. He catches the eye.”

Campbell has a long way to go before he becomes a regular part of the furniture at Molineux but the midfielder has plenty of potential.

After missing out on Sanches, Lage should look to unearth it.

Bangladesh prepare for Mendis threat

Preview of the 2nd Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Chittagong

Match facts January 3-7, 2009
Start time 09.30am (03.30 GMT)Big PictureBangladesh’s brave attempt at pulling off a record-breaking chase of 521 in Mirpur rounded off one of the most memorable months of Test cricket in recent memory. It also dispelled the notion that anything over 450 is unattainable in the fourth innings, even if it involves the weakest Test nation. Though the result didn’t go their way, Bangladesh’s effort has sparked some life and anticipation into the short series, which Sri Lanka were overwhelming favourites to sweep. Now, though, Bangladesh find the bar raised much higher. The talking point in Chittagong has been the return of Ajantha Mendis to the Sri Lankan squad from an ankle injury. Should he play, the home side will find it that much harder to square the series. Mendis left the Indians clueless in the home series last year and, if he has his way on a slow turner here, Bangladesh could suffer equally. The two-day gap between Tests wouldn’t have given Bangladesh enough time to prepare for Mendis. They may have handled Muttiah Muralitharan creditably on a fifth day pitch in Mirpur but Mendis, as recent history will tell you, is a different proposition.Bangladesh’s failure in the first innings in Mirpur – falling for 178 – proved decisive to the result and Mohammad Ashraful wasn’t afraid to point that out. “We need to bat at least four sessions in the first innings,” Ashraful said. “If we do that then we’ll have a decent score on the board. That’s the prerequisite for us getting a positive result in Test matches.”The Chittagong Test marks a personal milestone for Sri Lanka’s captain Mahela Jayawardene who plays his 100th Test. Since his debut in 1997, Jayawardene has scored 7926 runs at 52.84 and is Sri Lanka’s leading run-scorer in Tests. He is also 74 away from the 8000-run mark.”I can’t say that I’m not emotional,” Jayawardene said. “I’m not thinking about the personal milestone. It has been an honour to play for Sri lanka and I have said this before that I never expected to play 100 Test matches when I started off.”Form guide (last five Tests, most recent first)Sri Lanka WWLWL
Bangladesh LLLDLWatch out forMohammad Ashraful:
Bangladesh’s captain was in dire need of runs in Mirpur to lift not only his sagging form but the hopes of his team and he didn’t disappoint. He scored a face-saving century but his dismissal, for 101, was one of the most important breakthroughs of the Test. He shed extravagance for patience, negated the effect of Murali and, for a change, seemed intent on building an innings. Five hundreds in 47 Tests highlights his inconsistent career but having made a start, he’ll be looking to carry on. What remains to be seen is how much inspiration he – let alone the rest of the team – takes from his own effort. The carrom ball from Ajantha Mendis, which he releases with an unusual snap of his fingers. His variations have flummoxed even the most experienced players of spin. India’s Gautam Gambhir said recently that the trick is to read the spin off his hand rather than wait for it to pitch. Bangladesh haven’t been afraid to charge the spinners so the battle with Mendis should make for compelling viewing.Team newsWith Mendis in the frame, the axe will most certainly fall on Rangana Herath, who managed just one wicket in 38 overs in Mirpur. Jayawardene said a final decision would be taken after the practice session.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Michael Vandort, 2 Malinda Warnapura, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Tillakaratne Dishan, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8 Chaminda Vaas, 9 Dammika Prasad, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Muttiah MuraliatharanBangladesh have retained the same twelve from the first game, though Ashraful hinted at bringing in an extra spinner for a seamer. He felt Enamul Haque jnr, the left-armer, could come in to the equation at the expense of Mahbubul Alam, who picked up only one wicket in Mirpur.Bangladesh (probable) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Junaid Siddique, 4 Mohammad Ashraful (capt), 5 Raqibul Hasan, 6 Mehrab Hossain jnr, 7 Shakib Al Hasan, 8 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk) ,9 Mashrafe Mortaza, 10 Enamul Haque jnr/Mahbubul Alam, 11 Shahadat HossainPitch and conditionsThe surface at the Chittagong Divisional Stadium is similar to the one used for the Test against New Zealand, dry and devoid of grass. The Mirpur track held firm for all five days and gave some assistance to the seamers. However, the spinners from both sides are likely to do the bulk of the bowling here. This venue was where Shakib Al Hasan picked up 7 for 36 against New Zealand, the best innings figures by a Bangladesh bowler in Tests.Stats and TriviaAshraful has never managed to score back-to-back centuries or half-centuries. In fact, the highest he has ever scored after scoring a hundred or a fifty, is 26.Having scored four of his five hundreds against Sri Lanka, his average against them stands at 42.42 as opposed to his career average of 23.82.Since scoring an exact 400 in their debut Test in 2000, Bangladesh have passed the 400-mark on just three occasions since then in the first innings. The previous instance was in 2005.Quotes”We have seen him bowling against India on television. We also have footages but it is important not to think of him or Muralitharan too much and just try to play ball by ball. He has done very well in recent times and has taken heaps of wickets but our focus will be on playing each ball on its merit because this is a Test match.”
.”Last year we beat India in a Test series, drew England and beat the West Indies in the West Indies for the first time in our history. This is a new year and we have a lot of cricket in front of us.”

Nitschke fireworks help Australia to clean sweep

Shelley Nitschke’s breezy 94 ensured a clean sweep for Australia in the five-match ODI series against India after the bowlers had restricted the Indians to 177 for 9. Nitschke, Emma Sampson and Delissa Kimmince took two wickets each to set up a seven-wicket win at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.Indian openers Sulakshana Naik and Anagha Deshpande justified stand-in captain Rumeli Dhar’s decision to bat first by putting on a 54-run opening stand. However, once Naik fell, castled by Nitschke, a mini-collapse followed and India slipped to 70 for 4. It was thanks to Priyanka Roy and Amita Sharma’s 40-run seventh-wicket partnership that India went past 150.The Australian reply never looked like faltering. Alex Blackwell, fresh from a century in Saturday’s match, was cautious, while Nitschke launched into an Indian attack weakened by the absence of their fastest bowler, Jhulan Goswami. Nitschke slammed 15 fours and a six on her way to her highest ODI score, off 56 balls. She was eventually caught by Dhar off Mithali Raj, who also struck with her next ball, trapping Lisa Sthalekar leg-before. However, Australia had little trouble in completing the rout with 21 overs to spare.Nitschke, who missed the first four matches due to a thigh injury, was pleased with her efforts in her comeback game. “It’s never good being injured and it felt like a long time since I’d played, so today I just wanted to get to the crease and have a bit of a look at the bowlers,” she said. “We got a message early on that we wanted to try and get the runs quickly and by that time I was pretty set, the ball was getting older and things started to roll my way.”.Things haven’t gone India’s way since winning the Asia Cup earlier this year. They have lost all nine of their completed matches since then and have no more games scheduled before next year’s World Cup in March.Australia travel to New Zealand next for five ODIs and a Twenty20 to round off their pre-World Cup campaign.

McGain ruled out of first Test

Bryce McGain, Australia’s preferred spinner on the India tour, has been ruled out of the first Test after failing to recover from a shoulder injury he sustained last month. McGain’s ongoing problem means Jason Krejza, the offspinner, is almost certain to make his Test debut when the series begins in Bangalore on October 9.McGain strained his right shoulder while on tour with Australia A in September and, while he was confident the injury was not serious, he has struggled to bowl in the past week. McGain will not play in the Australians’ final tour match against a Board President’s XI starting in Hyderabad on Thursday and is also in doubt for the second Test.McGain, 36, failed to bowl at the squad’s first net session in India last week and missed the tour opener against the RCA Centre of Excellence. He tested the shoulder at training in Hyderabad on Tuesday but pulled up sore.”Bryce re-aggravated it, at no stage did he bowl at 100%, we were just building up to that every day, just chipping away at it and it was the highest intensity he bowled yesterday and his arm didn’t cope with it, so it’s a setback for him,” Australia’s physio Alex Kountouris told . “What we do know is that he’s not going to be right for the four-dayer and it’s going to be a few weeks at least, so that puts him out of this game and the first Test at least.”The lat dorsi is your back muscle and it attaches to the back of the arm and he strained that. It’s an unusual injury, not something that happens commonly, it attaches just a bit below the shoulder and it’s an important muscle when he’s following through and bowling.”Tim Nielsen, Australia’s coach, said it was yet to be decided whether to call for a replacement for McGain. “With the selectors coming in on the second day of this game, we will then be in the best situation to take a decision as to whether to ask for a replacement,” Nielsen said. “This is a great opportunity for Jason Krejza.”He has been excellent. He is a good part of the group and has worked hard to learn about the Indian conditions. He will be obviously the front runner for the Test series. It’s a brilliant position for him to be. He can be nice and relaxed for tomorrow’s game and use it as a good preparation for the first Test.”

Everton eye move for Lewis Leigh

Everton’s academy is one of the very best in the country when it comes to integrating young players at senior level.

Whether it’s Wayne Rooney or the likes of Leon Osman and Ross Barkley, it’s rare to find an Everton squad that doesn’t include an academy graduate.

One of the most underrated players to come through the ranks is the aforementioned Osman.

He quietly went about his business in the middle of the park, being compared to Andres Iniesta and earning two England caps.

The midfielder was a loved figure at Goodison Park but they’ve been missing a tidy player of his character in their midfield.

That’s not to say their central areas aren’t strong, however. In Allan, they have a player of similar stature who also isn’t afraid to get stuck in.

Though, Marcel Brands and co could find a legitimate Osman heir in a young midfielder at Preston North End.

The Toffees have been linked with a move for 17-year-old Lewis Leigh this summer but they face plenty of competition with Arsenal, Leicester and West Ham also in the race.

He’s yet to earn his senior debut for Preston but has been included among the first-team squad previously.

Evidently very highly rated, the teenager has some of the key qualities that set Osman apart from his peers at Everton.

After starring in the FA Youth Cup last season, Leigh was given an outstanding review by Lancashire Live:

“Clearly a fearless midfield player who plays with his heart on his sleeve. When the tide of the game swung the way of Lincoln, Leigh stood up to the fight, maintained a high-level of energy in his play and got stuck in.”

Immediately you can see where the Osman comparisons come from. The diminutive midfielder won 2.4 tackles per game throughout the 2012/13 campaign, proving to be a combative force.

Lancashire Live added: “Not an overly imposing figure physically, he [Leigh] makes up for that with his aggression and hunger on the pitch. Not afraid of a tackle, to try the ambitious pass or take the shot on.”

Osman was by no means a tall figure but used his frame sensibly to dominate opponents before bursting forward into space.

Leigh very much appears to be a comparable player and although he’s not played any first-team football yet, the future looks very bright for him.

AND in other news, Everton handed ideal chance to sign “exceptional” £150k-p/w brute, Rafa must take it…
