Karma! Newcastle fans mock Fulham’s relegation after unearthing 2016 tweet

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to the week’s big Premier League news, as Fulham’s relegation was confirmed.

There is just one relegation spot left up for grabs after this week’s Premier League action, as Fulham will now join Huddersfield in the second tier next season.

Scott Parker’s side were well beaten by Watford at Vicarage Road on Tuesday after losing to Manchester City at the weekend.

The Cottagers went full Football Manager mode last summer, spending huge sums of money on players no one had ever heard of, such as the £30m they splashed on Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, who has started just 11 league games.

The Magpies meanwhile were forced to watch on while the likes of Wolves and Fulham went shopping all summer, with Mike Ashley being his usual self on Tyneside.

And yet, it is the Craven Cottage outfit that are going down, and Newcastle fans are rubbing it in their faces after they unearthed a tweet from 2016, in which the official Fulham account mocked the Magpies’ presence in the second tier.

Leeds fans react on Twitter as Pontus Jansson could be fit for Millwall clash

[ad_pod ]

Phil Hay confirmed in the Yorkshire Evening Post that Leeds United centre-back Pontus Jansson could unexpectedly be fit to face Millwall at Elland Road on Saturday, and Whites fans were quick to react to the linked story on Twitter.

The 28-year-old was ruled out for three weeks by leedsunited.com little over seven days ago, but Hay says the Sweden international has made a swift recovery and is now battling to be involved against the Lions.

The presence of the 6 ft 4 defender in the side in what is sure to be a feisty encounter against Neil Harris’ men would certainly be a huge boost, with the hosts needing a reaction following their 1-0 defeat to automatic promotion rivals Sheffield United at home last time out.

There is no doubt that the Elland Road faithful are delighted that they could have the influential figure available with one individual saying it “would be massive to have his height”, while plenty of others were keen to praise head of medicine and performance Rob Price for the job he is doing.

It would certainly be brilliant if he manages to pull off another early return for a United player, and one supporter cheekily asked “can we get Rob Price to sort out Brexit?”

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Between The Lines: Gary Bowyer reveals key plans for Bradford

[ad_pod ]

New Bradford City boss Gary Bowyer is set to take charge of his first match on Saturday, when Peterborough United travel to Valley Parade.

Bowyer could do with a winning start as the Bantams are currently in relegation trouble and he doesn’t have long to get their season back on track and steer them clear of danger. Posh, though, arrive in good form, having beaten Wycombe Wanderers 4-2 last time out.

Bowyer is aware that he faces a tough task and that changes need to be made at Bradford. He has already been clear that fans can expect to see something different from his side this weekend.

How much money could you make busking for a week as a freestyle footballer? Find out in the video below…

What he said

As quoted by the Bantams’ official website, Bowyer said: “I want the team to be playing and passing with a bit of style on the ball while working hard off of it. The football needs to be easy on the eye and we want to make the fans proud to support this team.

The 47-year-old continued, explaining that he has already begun the process of introducing his ideas to the squad:

“We have had meetings with every player, individually, emphasising what we want from them but also what they can expect from me. They need to know the door is always open because we are here to help. We have to ensure we do the basics well. There is no secret formula to success, other than working very, very hard.”

Recipe for success

The football at Valley Parade has been stale for far too long, so fans will be delighted to hear that Bowyer is committed to bringing attractive, stylish play to the fore. With these words, the manager has sent a message to the supporters in an attempt inspire some much-needed passion and atmosphere in the stadium on Saturday.

Bowyer has also sent a message to his players. Given the tough time Bradford have had this season, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he arrived to a dressing room desperately low on confidence and morale. By being open, and taking the time to speak to each player individually, the coach may have succeeded in giving them a welcome boost.

On top of that, he has revealed the central pillars of his plan to revitalise the Bantams: a back to basics approach, aiming to instil an attacking, attractive footballing philosophy, based on hard work and communication.

Fans will be hoping it’s a recipe for success.

The Chalkboard: Rodgers has made instant Leicester impact by recalling Wes Morgan

[ad_pod ]

In Claude Puel’s final months at Leicester, they looked a shadow of a team who had won the title just a few years ago. Obviously, they were never going to repeat that fate but their fall to mediocrity this season was one which had left fans frustrated.

Finally, the King Power faithful were subdued to a campaign where nothing overly exciting was happening. They’d gone from an outstanding promotion campaign under Nigel Pearson to the great escape. What followed was unparalleled in their history as they won the Premier League and subsequently played in the Champions League.

But, under Brendan Rodgers, they’ve begun a period of revival. The source of which has been bringing back a man so key in the best period in the club’s history.

Captain Morgan

Puel’s Leicester had strayed away from some of the basic principles the club had established under the likes of Claudio Ranieri. There was a lack of organisation, experience and there wasn’t much authority to their play. But, by bringing back Wes Morgan into the fray, Leicester have rediscovered elements that made them so successful.

The centre-back started in Rodgers’ first game against Watford as part of a back three, standing out ahead of Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire. However, he was swiftly dropped for the game against Burnley, only to enter the fray just six minutes in after Maguire was sent off.

Morgan’s recall, therefore, may not have been completely deliberate, but after scoring two goals in back-to-back wins, he’s become one of the Foxes stand out players once again.

Key presence

If Rodgers’ backing of Morgan needed any further evidence, then the decision to give him a new one-year contract sums up how important the captain has become again.

He’s come back into the side and offered a reassuring and commanding presence that wasn’t necessarily there before.

The 35-year-old has impressive stats this season, winning 4.1 aerial duels and making five clearances per game, more than the highly-touted Maguire in both departments.

He may be getting on, but Morgan’s place at the club is as important as ever.

Celtic: Oliver Burke can’t be another John McGinn

Changes are happening at Parkhead next season, that much is obvious.

However, why change with something which isn’t broken? Indeed, that’s a mentality which Neil Lennon and those planning upstairs should keep in mind while shaping Celtic’s team. They already have some bright talents capable of taking it up a notch.

Among those blooming talents is star loanee Oliver Burke. After arriving at the winter transfer window, the 21-year-old’s taken Celtic Park by storm and looks to be the kind of player many thought he’d turn into upon leaving Nottingham Forest for RB Leipzig in 2017. In just nine appearances, he’s scored four goals and glittered up their attack with his presence, looking a cut above pretty much everyone else in Scotland.

However, with his tenure set to end next summer, the Bhoys have a decision to make.

According to reports from the Birmingham Mail, Celtic are hopeful of signing him on a permanent basis from the Baggies in the summer. Allegedly after Darren Moore’s departure, Burke’s unsure about returning to West Brom and is rallying for the move north, in what could be a happy marriage.

However, the Hoops will need to shell out a decent fee for his services. Indeed, having failed to splash the cash on John McGinn over the summer, Peter Lawwell and those behind the scenes have to prove they can move on in the transfer market.

It might be costly, but one which almost guarantees big rewards. Burke’s already settled into Celtic Park really well in the last few months, becoming popular with fans while also forming nice chemistry with his attackers. He’s comfortable on the ball, can run past defenders and create chances from far afar.

Burke compliments James Forrest as well as new sensation Odsonne Edouard really nicely in the final third. A creative, sparkling figure who can create and score goals at will, Burke seems primed to get even better and Celtic should definitely want him at his best.

Nottingham Forest should forget about signing Massey and promote from within

[ad_pod ]

Wigan’s Gavin Massey is out of contract at the end of the season, but the club have begun contract talks in the hope of preventing him from joining reported admirers QPR and Nottingham Forest. However, should the Reds actually be looking to sign him?

What’s the word?

Should Massey fail to agree on new terms with Wigan, then he could make the move to Martin O’Neill’s Forest side in the summer. According to the Daily Mail, there is interest from the Reds but it’s unclear whether they have formal plans to make him part of their squad.

It is understood that the winger would like to stay at his current team but that could depend on whether they stay in the Championship.

Wigan are relegation threatened at the moment, just three points adrift of the dreaded drop zone so the likelihood of a departure could be increased with that in mind.

Promote from within instead

Forest’s problem this season has been a lack of pace and despite Massey being able to supply them with that, they have an equally promising option already at the club.

Although a brilliant player this season, that alternative doesn’t come in the form of Joe Lolley. Rather than him, O’Neill has a young prodigy right in front of his eyes with Arvin Appiah waiting in the wings.

There have been calls for him to feature more often in the first team and instead of seeking an external solution to their problem, Forest need to look closer to home.

The 18-year-old is capable of playing out wide and has already displayed his potential, scoring one goal in the two first-team opportunities he’s been afforded this term.

The England youth international possesses pace and the ability to beat a man, something that could help add an extra level of creativity.

Massey is a player who has struggled for consistency at most of the clubs he’s played for – developing Appiah and promoting him next season would be of greater benefit.

Newcastle: Fernandez the main benefactor of Florian Lejeune’s injury

Newcastle United were dealt a major injury blow on Saturday when centre-back Florian Lejeune picked up another knee injury that saw him leave the field in some discomfort.

It has since been confirmed that the 27-year-old will miss the remainder of the season due to the significance of the injury.

Despite Lejeune being replaced by Paul Dummett at the stage, his absence for the rest of the campaign could present the perfect opportunity for Federico Fernandez to introduce himself to the Newcastle faithful again.

The 30-year-old defender joined the Magpies in August last year from Swansea City on a two-year deal but has been in and out of Rafa Benitez’s team for the majority of the season.

Fernandez played a number of games at the start of the season but since the turn of the new year, Benitez has opted to keep on him on the bench rather, while there have also been a few games where he wasn’t in the matchday squad. But now, Benitez’s hand could be forced and it might not be a bad time of the season to give Fernandez another shot at first-team football and let him grow more comfortable in the Premier League.

The Magpies struggled in the early months of the season and were quite vulnerable in defence where Fernandez had a couple of difficult games to show his worth. At his best, the former Napoli ace can give the Magpies one of the best rearguards outside of the top six in the Premier League.

It will, therefore, be an excellent testing period for Fernandez to see if he truly has what it takes to make a real impact on this Newcastle team and if he could develop into a regular starter in the future, who could help Benitez establish an organised and structured defensive unit.

Newcastle fans, how big a miss will Lejeune be? Do you back Fernandez to replace him? Join the discussion by commenting below…

Nottingham Forest fans hammer Mike Dean after defeat to Aston Villa

[ad_pod ]

Mike Dean is never far from the microscope and he found himself the centre of attention again as Nottingham Forest supporters berated him on Twitter after his refereeing display against Aston Villa.

The Wirral based referee has upset numerous football fans in his time in the game and has also caught the eye for his flamboyant displays on the pitch. It was Forest fans who this time took issue with his officiating, attacking the referee during and after the game.

They were excessively vocal in their displeasure for Dean, with one specific tweet claiming that he isn’t fit to take charge of a game as supporters were left in bewilderment that he referees Premier League fixtures on a regular basis.

A host of the reaction was focused upon how he likes to make the game all about himself with the Reds faithful failing to back down on their hatred for the 50-year-old.

Some labelled him clueless and shambolic, with one tweet directed specifically to the FA demanding he is never sent back to the City Ground again.

One fan also took issue with Dean refusing to send a Villa player off. Forest initially took the lead in the game as Jack Colback put them in front early on. However, the visitors hit back through a brace from John McGinn and a goal from Kortney Hause.

Here’s what Forest fans had to say about the much-maligned referee.
